View Full Version : Telefunken stereo console - $125
radiotvnut 11-22-2008, 09:02 PM I was in a local antique store and saw a rather large, about 6', Telefunken console stereo. The dial was on the top of the case and it looked to have a flip top that could be folded to cover the dial area. The cabinet was covered in other items; so, I really couldn't examine it that well. It had AM, FM, and a couple of SW bands. As big as it is, I'm sure it has a record changer and maybe a reel to reel tape recorder. I have no idea if it works; but, she wants $125 for it. The cabinet looks nice for the exception of one of the legs is broken and about to fall off. She did say she would negotiate on the price.
I don't have any pictures or a model number. I was with my Mother and was getting rushed. Maybe I can go back with my neighbor and find out more about it.
Are these Telefunken consoles worth going after or should I leave it alone. The price seems a little high; but, that just may be me. What do you think?
Fisherdude 11-22-2008, 09:09 PM If it's got tube gear in it, oh yeah.
Urizen 11-22-2008, 09:10 PM I had the chance to hear an old Tele console a couple of years ago.
Good luck!
iflopdanutz 11-22-2008, 09:14 PM I second the "tube" comment. If it's a tube unit and works I'd say make an offer and see what happens. I had one about a year ago and it produces wonderful sound. I wanted to gut it but couldn't bring myself to as it was in great condition so I sold it. I didn't have the room to keep it.

You did the right thing. If it is in very good condition I don't see how they can gut these.
clydeselsor 11-22-2008, 10:44 PM They are cool!
iflopdanutz 11-22-2008, 10:44 PM I just couldn't see gutting it out. It was far too good looking. I hope the new owner kept it whole.
radiotvnut 11-22-2008, 10:45 PM I'll go back and see what I can do. Before I go back, two things must happen:
1. Some money must come my way.
2. Some SPACE must come my way.
EastPoint 11-23-2008, 08:50 AM If it's got a broken leg, you can talk the seller down for that. If it has ANY problems working, likewise. Offer $50 and work your way up.
radiotvnut 02-07-2009, 03:38 PM Well, the telefunken is still there for $125. She claims she can't take less than $110 because she has too much money in it. What that usually means is we can't take any less and still make a killing. I did get a better look at the cabinet. It has a small flip up lid in the center that flips back to expose the dial and controls. On the top right, there is a lid that raises to expose a storage area for records or a r2r deck. On the left hand side, there is another lid that raises to expose a record changer. I've got a couple of '30's radio consoles that I don't have any money in that I may see if I can do some "horse trading" with her so I can get the tele. cheaper. My Mother has already told me "you need not think you're bringing that ugly thing in this house". I'll have to go with my neighbor to pick it up and sneak it in the shop.
superdog 02-07-2009, 04:30 PM You never did say if it worked. If it worked I may get it.If not I'll pass on it for that price.
radiotvnut 02-07-2009, 04:35 PM I'm going to assume it does not work. That building is packed with stuff and it would be hard to move it to an outlet. I couldn't even move it enough to get a model number.
radiotvnut 02-13-2009, 05:10 PM I'm tired of dealing with this woman and it looks like I'm going to let this one go. I took her a late '20's Victor console radio and a '37 Philco console radio. Both needed restoring; but, were complete except for the knobs on the Victor. She wouldn't even talk to me about buying them or doing any sort of trading for the Telefunken. This is just another example of dealers that don't want to give you shit for what you have; but, they want a large carved in stone price for their junk. Everytime I try to buy something from her, it's always "I've got way too much money in this". Well, she didn't offer me "way too much" money when I tried to sell her something. I went by the other flea market that I deal with often and the cashier told me that people come into her store all the time, talking about the high prices at the other flea market.
Stark 02-14-2009, 03:39 AM "Way too much money in it" is also a sign of a dealer who doesn't know how to do business. You buy at 35-65% of what you sell for unless you can guarantee an instant flip. When they have way too much money in them they paid too much and are not smart enough to get back what they can and move on with it. How many people are even going to consider buying this from her? You cannot deal with a dealer like this. Sorry you didn't get it. :(

In my hobby, I've let many things go for less than what I paid. I usually don't sweat over it because I usually end up making it back on something else; and, I'm not missing any meals, so, that's OK. I do this more for the love of the hobby than the love of money.
I did talk to my favorite flea market vendor, who has a booth in the flea market where the Telefunken is. This guy really makes the rounds and can usually make deals with people. He said he'd see what he could do about getting the Telefunken at a deal that I could live with. If he does, that's great! If not, no big deal. Like I said, I'm done with the owner. I'll concentrate more on the places where I usually find deals rather than the ones that are a total waste of time.
