Greetings Gentlemen and fellow Sansui comrads,

I was browsing on the 'Bay earlier, and noticed Auction # 5702736963 (I'd post the link directly here, but since I am the winning bidder, the link seems to actually link to my Paypal account as well, I think y'all understand) ... anyway, the Buy It Now price seemed reasonable, so I went for it, I have many nice Sansui amps & receivers in my collection already, but this will be my 1st experience with a (Sansui) hi fi tube amp, so I am a bit eager to see what the experience will be like.

I contacted the seller to ask for more background Info/History on this particular unit, hopefully its all-original and works 100%, I am awaiting his reply. Also mentioned it to my good friend, Isao, over at www.sansui.us who is quite knowledgeable on Sansui tube models, and also waiting for his reply.

I decided to take a chance and use the BIN option, instead of waiting for the seller to answer my questions, in case it is indeed a good buy and someone else mightve snagged it in the meantime.

I suppose I will now see who the resident tube experts are here on AK, and ask if they are familiar with this particular model.

Wondering if this amp can drive 4 ohm speakers ok (my Infinity Renaissance 90's) ???

It will probably have barrier strips on the back giving you a choice of either 4, 8 or 12-16 ohm taps. Be sure to match your impedances as output trannies get rather persnickity when presented with the wrong load.

Yes, one of the things I'd like to see is a photo of the back of the unit and what the speaker terminals look like, which wasnt shown in the Ebay photos. (maybe something like this model?) :

I havent found too much info yet on this model in a Google search, but I'll keep on looking... Curious to know which particular Tubes it uses, biasing & ckt design info, etc...

Thats a nice looking receiver. It's a pretty rare receiver, I think its a SAX-100. I have a 500A and it sounds great when its working, which is not often. Sansui tube receivers are not very reliable due to the old oil capacitors that go bad over time. I've seen many, many other 500As with the same problem mine had, bad caps causing an output transformer to blow. Managed to find a replacement transformer and fixed the problem. It worked fine for awhile, then one day an oil capacitor in the PS circuit literally blew up. Fixed that, now something else has gone bad causing the 7189As to glow orange. Its just sitting right now. Eventually I'm going to replace ALL the capacitors in the amp, preamp, and PS sections. But, when it works, it does sound good.

Doesn't look like it will be able to drive the Infinitys, seems to only have 8 and 16 ohm terminals on the back. Wouldn't have enough power for them anyways. Should sound nice, though.

B/F,

Congrats are in order. A nice compliment to the collection! If it sounds anything like my AU-111, you're in for a pleasant listening experience .

Very good looking unit. Could you please comment on the sound if you manage to make it work?

And judging from the scan below, I think it's an
AX-200, rather then AX-100!
