I'm trying out that pre. Can I sub in a 12AU7 for the AX? I get confused about which one has the higher gain.

Great schematics!

The 12AU7has less gain than the 12AX7 but I'm not sure they should be substituted directly.

e.g., Plate current on the AX is 1.5mA per triode. AU is 10.2mA per triode. If the power supply calculations are for 2 x 12AX7 or 6mA current and 2 x 12AU7 pull 40.8mA this might throw off your voltages.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
