View Full Version : anyone got any top quality pictures of a pioneer QX-949A
LARRY PRIESTMAN 06-03-2004, 10:14 AM Any nudies or complete fully dressed pics including the back please..
As I have just come across one in the states ""not on the bay"" and it's being sent to old blitey for me....how cool these units look..shame that these don't sound as well as they look in 4 channel or so Ive read on the net,... ""but I'll be the judge of all that""...but hell!! it will still sound better than any av made today...plus my 1010 needs a fellow TOTL friend to sit with as it is a bit lost with all the other silver faced pioneers here...
Has anyone on AK ever owned one or heard one...please chime in and give your thoughts on them...not worried to much about the sound as I have one of the best quad's made ""Sansui's""....just love the looks...these are very cool pioneers of there time...very 1010ish in looks+wondering if these sound anything like the 1010 in 2 channel mode....food for thought I think....plus these can be picked up a lot cheaper than most TOTL pioneers...
looking forward to this one.....WISH ME LUCK..
fondest regards larry (uk)

piece-it pete 06-04-2004, 01:33 PM Larry,
I've got a copy of the QX-949 manual (not a) that i'd be happy to send you gratis, maybe a small donation to AK. Also schematics.
Just PM me in you're interested!

LARRY PRIESTMAN 06-04-2004, 01:44 PM this is how my new baby came to my good friend in state side
LARRY PRIESTMAN 06-04-2004, 01:53 PM This how she looked after a quick clean with a paint brush,
now when she travels the THOUSANDS miles to me she will under go the full works...she is in full working condition with exception to one or two bulbs "" big deal that"" and as we can see she is a total Virgin never been touched ""just as I like em"" no muppets been inside with the soldering iron, Thank GOD!!
LARRY PRIESTMAN 06-04-2004, 01:59 PM look at the quality of these old girls...very 1010'ISH all shielded no not much biuld up of sh!t there..ONLY DUST... so I've been reliably informed..the woodern case is very dry but in first class condition with only a very light hair line mark on the top which will disapear after it receives a drop of lemon oil
just total class.
my friend says that she sounds out standing and he should know as he is also a HIFI NUT and a member of AK

piece-it pete 06-04-2004, 02:08 PM Wow that sure looks identical to my QX-949.
I wonder what the difference is?
Pete
LARRY PRIESTMAN 06-04-2004, 02:19 PM The 949a has a so called better decoder thats it....+ it was made later on in the 70's...not intrested in all that has been said about this unit.... ie:not very good decoders and alike I just love these old blue faced pioneers, and this was the gream de la gream of them all...thats why I want it..and for no other reason...""I LOVE IT""

LARRY PRIESTMAN 08-06-2004, 04:33 AM The 949a arrived monday and after a look over I noted that the mains output on the back had been smashed due to transit..but this wasn't a problem as I had a spare unit from a dead SX-950 that was parted out yrs ago..so a quick change over with the soldering iron, and all was well...but not as I hoped as she wouldn't fire up...hmmmmm I thought, then the lights came on but no relay click.hmmmm.So I left her on without the speakers switched on and let her warm up..still no relay click..hmmmm.
then after a hour or two I heard the relay click,so I put the head phones on and the tuner was singing like a baby. And she was fine..but I had to go out and switched her off..came back, and yep same thing nothin...
So I tore her to bits as you do, and uncliped the reg board and yep she needed a complete resolder as all the fuse clips were minus there solder, and three of the clips were black though arcing. So a complete resolder and then tryed her and she fired up instantly..she is very near mint. And sounds bloody fantastic.
shes been on all the time and not missed a beat..fires up instantly in the morning now..all the lights work, and the walnut is unmarked, this is another keeper thats for sure.
LARRY PRIESTMAN 08-06-2004, 04:44 AM The caps need changing on the reg board.."whats new"

agger 03-08-2005, 03:14 PM Hi,
I have a chance to get a QX-949 on ebay.
What would it be worth to pay for?
agger
EchoWars 03-08-2005, 03:40 PM Beats the hell outta me...what do you want to pay for it?
grumpy 03-08-2005, 03:43 PM They can be from 1-300.00 here in the US but who knows in Germany.
agger 03-09-2005, 01:28 PM The QX should be basicaly OK, only some noise from the pots. I would like to get it for around 120$, but I don't know if that will work.
From that what I have seen as prices mentioned here in AK, it is easier to get good pieces for little money in the US than here in Germany. So I will try it..
agger 03-12-2005, 12:39 PM ...it`s getting up to speed now---

musicnsurf 03-12-2005, 11:15 PM my main receiver was a qx-949 for 5 years. it was mint. quad display, everything worked perfectly. paid $175USD. however, when my gf and i parted ways last year, i gave her the receiver plus a pair of vintage coral 3 ways (immac, also). fortunately, i had my wharfedale 70's (i'm the second owner, 1969 vintage, all original) and a sx-950 to cover the loss. i guess you could say i'm a good guy. :D
