View Full Version : Monster HTS3500MKII Acting up
Mark W. 11-30-2008, 12:06 PM My Monster HTS3500MKII Power conditioner/Surge protector is acting up as of this morning.
I have this unit all interconnected in my system so that with a single push of the power switch on my Heathkit AD-1307 Audio Control Center all the power to my whole system comes on. Various parts of the system are plugged into the proper outlets on the HTS3500MKII But for some reason this morning now when I turn off the power the circuit the amp is plugged into will not time out and turn off.
Any ideas?
I will of course email Monster and see if there is anything they can do to help me out.
I need this to work as the DBX400a Program switcher is plugged into the unswitched outlets on my amp and with this problem I can't turn it off (it does not have power switch)
Not to mention having to hit 2 other power switches then normally.
DENNYDOG 11-30-2008, 12:15 PM Do all the "operating" leds come on? I have read they won't work once they protect your equipment from a big surge or spike. Not sure if this is true or not.
I haven't had any problems for the couple years I have had mine. I use my Pioneer timer to switch mine on and off with the remote ac control.

Not sure what would cause that, Other than that specific outlet tripped. If there was an issue with the surge protector, It would alarm. I owned that model and lightning struck the pole outside, The unit shut everything down as advertised, Saving about 4K worth of my stuff. Once the unit alarms, It's done. However, Monster has a "Buyback" program, Hand over the fried unit, And buy the newer version for a flat rate of $150. I know own the HT3600, And it's been flawless for 2 years. Monster has proven to be a good company in terms of customer support, Pricing, and tech support, For me anyway.

Not familiar with the 3500, I have the 5100 and the outlets are programmable with switches. The times I've had the unit tripped, I had to flip the switches to unswitched and then back to either switched or switched on with delay to reset them, so the things I want to power down would.
Mark W. 11-30-2008, 12:53 PM I'll double check the Manual. But this is nothing to do with any sort of protection or action as a result of a power surge. The single AMP outlet will not turn off at all unless I unplug the unit. The other outlets are working as they should to the best of my testing.
Edit: Well absolutely nothing about a fault like this in the manual and doing a search at Monster for this unit brings up nothing. I guess I try googling and wait for Monster to tell me either it's not covered or that it will cost less to buy another unit (something I don't have funds for this time of year).

If it's less than 2 years old, they'll replace it for nothing.

Yea it's easy over 2 years old. They were on close out 2.5-3 years ago when I bought it.
240sx4u 11-30-2008, 09:12 PM My HTS5100 just up and stopped working after about 7 months of ownership.. it happens. I suspect you can find the culprit by opening the lid. Seems to me, that it likely uses relays and one is dying on ya.

That's the plan Evan. Soo as I have the time to pull it out (takes near half a day to pull my rack out of the Shrine). I'll take a look inside and maybe with some help from AK figure out where to hit it with my delicate hammer
Mark W. 12-03-2008, 10:47 AM Well interestingly enough I haven't heard back form Monster yet. And yesterday I noticed the outlet had finally shut off. I then used the system a couple times and the whole unit appears to be functioning as it should. SO it was a temp problem not that I believe it won't come back but for now all appears well.

Maybe there was a heat issue, Anyway, Glad your back to the music!

I don't know my rack is activily cooled based on the temp directly above the Amps cooling vents. The Monster unit sits at the very bottom of the rack so no heat from any other unit is effecting it as the rack is in a pocket that acts as a chimeny with any air warmer then the air below it convecting out a vent at the top.
But I am glad it appears to working properly I have some guests coming over Sat for a little listening session so it would be nice not to have anything mess up.

We sent dozens of these units back to Monster for intermittent problems exactly like you describe, and finally dropped their line of power conditioners entirely. We never got good answers as to the cause(s), and couldn't afford to have these failing out in the field.
Best of luck with their warranty (if you need to pursue it), hope it works out for you.
