So I'm assuming most if not all of the SX line of receivers is covered with a thin-as-paper plastic material. Like a fake wooden veneer.
Anyway, I just got a SX-650 (my first Pioneer receiver), and noticed some peeling of this material from the sides of the case. Is it vinyl?
I'm wondering if there's some way to fix this...ideas? Can you buy more of this stuff somewhere?

Not exactly, my earlier and smaller SX-424 has a solid wood case. The vinyl covered metal cases appeared later, probably as a cost cutting process.

They were often a translucent layer of yinyl that gave the appearence of woodgrain layered over a brown heavier vinyl.

If the vinyl ain't peeling, its not a genuine SX-650.:D
As for what to do, use the search function and you will find a plethora of ideas and inspirations regarding adding veneer or new vinyl. Lot of the fellas here have done some great work and give very good instructions.
I myself have an SX-650 with the obligatory peeling vinyl. One day soon, its number will come up in my to do list and I will add veneer to it.
