View Full Version : What'd ya get from your Secret Santa? v.2008 luvvinvinyl 11-30-2008, 04:09 PM When you find out what you got from your Secret Santa/Harry Hannukah, please let us know. Drybasement 12-06-2008, 10:24 AM I got a package today from Acoustic Sounds. Last week I ordered some poly outer sleeves for my vinyl but that came in Fridays mail so I thought to myself, "where'd this come from?". Then it dawned on me as I was tearing it open. My Secret Santa gift has arrived. Sure enough, inside were two vinyl records... Calexico - Garden Ruin Kings Of Leon - Because Of The Times (limited edition red vinyl) Too cool! I've heard some Calexico before (Feast Of Wire) so I know what to expect from them but the Kings Of Leon will be completely new to me. I've heard of them but never heard them. Big thanks to my Secret Santa. You done good. :thmbsp: PS. Marantzfan (Anthony), you da man. :D It must have been hard going through my posts trying to find some music I didn't already have. Thank you sir. marantzfan 12-06-2008, 10:33 AM I got a package today from Acoustic Sounds. Thank you sir. How in gods name did you know it was me?:scratch2: EDIT: They must have sent a copy of the receipt in the box showing the billing address, even though I told them not to. Ugh. Anyhow, glad to hear that I was able to get you something you didn't already have. BTW, my friend's wife is the sister of the drummer in Calexico. Thats how I know of em.. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy them both and have a Merry Christmas. Drybasement 12-06-2008, 10:44 AM A little birdy told me. That, and the invoice. :D marantzfan 12-06-2008, 02:52 PM I got my Secret Santa gift today. I was out cleaning up the garage when the mailman walks up (scared the hell out of me cause I didn't see him coming) and hands me a package addressed from Secret Santa. Now, I always thought Santa resided on the North Pole, but this package was from Kansas, so I'm thinking Mr. Jaymanaa is my Secret Santa... That and I noticed he viewed my user profile recently...:D Anyhow, I opened it up hoping for some sort of serving dish or utensil to use over the holidays, but no. Just some Vinyl....Well you can imagine my disappointment, now I'll have to listen to Johnny Cash and John Coltrane over the Holidays....:tears: Oh well, guess I'll make the best of it...Thanks Jaymanaa!!!! jaymanaa 12-06-2008, 03:10 PM Cool, hope you like'm. I'm curious as to the SG on the "Legacy" vinyl as I don't have any. Lemme know, cause all I need is a half a reason to pick that Johny up for myself.:D Urizen 12-06-2008, 07:18 PM Santa just delivered a MoFi GeoDisc, a fancy-schmancy cartridge alignment tool. Cool! Now I can toss my paper jig. Thanks, Hanukkah Harry...errr, ummm Santa...whoever you are.:thmbsp: www.records 12-08-2008, 05:19 PM I came home on my lunch hour today and found a package on the porch from my Secret Santa. I can tell SS has been doing some checking up on me.:thmbsp: I got 2 lps, Santana (debut lp) and Santana Abraxas, both sealed Sundazed pressing from the original analog masters. Very cool indeed. PLUS, a book, The Complete Book on Mexican Cooking. Mexican food is my absolute favorite and I can't wait to try out some of these recipes. I can tell my SS spent some time snoopin around my posts before selecting my gift.:thmbsp: Tomball, TX.? Could it be the one and only mfhale? THanks Monty, I absolutely love the gifts. mfhale 12-08-2008, 06:35 PM Really hope you enjoy them, Steve. Didn't figure a bucket of Uncle Mike's stink bait would be well received. mfhale 12-08-2008, 06:56 PM Just stopped by the mailbox on the way home...Booyah! A package from Secret Santa. :cool:The dog really wanted his supper, but he had to wait while I opened my present. Two CDs that I've never heard (or even heard of): the subdudes - Street Symphony JJ Grey & Mofro - Orange Blossoms Listening to the JJ Grey & Mofro right now...EXCELLENT!:music: But that's not all; there is also a sealed maxell XLII 35-90 reel. That shows some real research on the part of SS to know that I resurrected a hi-bias deck. Unless I'm mistaken, the best source for new music is a Drybasement in Midland, Michigan. Thanks eleventy batrillion, Darren...you hit the nail right on the head.:thmbsp: www.records 12-08-2008, 08:39 PM Really hope you enjoy them, Steve. Didn't figure a bucket of Uncle Mike's stink bait would be well received. Monty, as you have probably read, I love fishing as much as I do music and audio. This time of year though, the music will get more play time. You did good my friend. Very good!! Thank you! Drybasement 12-09-2008, 09:31 AM Monty, I'm glad you are enjoying your gift. You can never tell if the music you send will appeal to a persons' taste. I knew you liked the blues and blues rock so I figured a little Florida swamp music couldn't hurt. :D I'm a big fan of JJ Grey's Mofro. The Subdudes are from New Orleans and blend a mixture of different styles including blues, zydeco and a little swampiness just to even things out. David (dmax99) and I saw them perform last month and they were fantastic. I read about your R2R project and since I had a spare reel lying around I figured you could use it. Cheers and have a wonderful holiday season. Darren luvvinvinyl 12-09-2008, 08:47 PM My inbox brought my SS gift: a gift certificate to mymusic.com from opt80. Thanks, Alan. I love shopping for music. Edit: DOH! Alan is NOT my Secret Santa, just a really great guy! (In case you forgot, I did the draw!) Patriot1776 12-09-2008, 09:00 PM None for me yet, of course I've not been here that long. What I'm hoping for, from brother, is a Megadeth LP, and maybe a USB phono-preamp, but seeing as he never leaves the campus of the college he's at, I dunno. I'm hoping he decides to give e-buying a try because of it. TWantiques 12-10-2008, 09:03 PM Received a package today from my SS. No name but a return address of Royal Oak, Michigan. Now the tough part. I'm one of those who waits until Christmas to open it. All I have to do is keep telling myself "I can wait, I can wait." My wife thinks I'm nuts. "How can you wait?" Terry I like waiting until Christmas too, but with this we all know the deal, and besides, most of us probably will not know who sent what, so the SS's are going to be anxious to know how well their presents are appreciated. So mine is coming open right off the bat! So whomever is my SS, I will post in this thread as soon as I get it. VinylHanger 12-11-2008, 03:01 AM Got mine today. In fact I was driving by the house and saw Santa himself in a fedex truck. Flipped a Uee and about smacked the back of the truck. Then I had to wait till I got back home for good to open it. My wife was bummed it wasn't olive oil. :D A bunch of great jazz and some rock and pretty much eclectic collection of vinyl. Which if you saw my vinyl collection you would know it will fit right in. I'm listening to Oscar Brown Jr. as we speak. From the first note I knew this was a great album. :thmbsp: Next up some Zeppelin. Told you it was eclectic. Thanks SS, perfect gift, and the DW brush will come in very handy. However, my OCD kicks in and it is very hard to open sealed vinyl, so I will have to fight the good fight and rip those suckers open at the earliest chance. I'll wait till the weekend for that. Popping open a nice winter warmer and some new vinyl, what can be better. :thmbsp: shimniok 12-11-2008, 09:46 AM I couldn't wait until Christmas when the package arrived from SoundstageDirect -- Mozart Mass in C minor, Deutsche Grammophon - 180g virgin vinyl, audiophile mastering/pressing !! Done a little research on who my Secret Santa may be but any one of you could have ordered these online from All Vinyl Records so I have to figure that it will probably remain a secret. Man, those Memphis folks now their blues. Now if they can get that B-Ball thing workin............:D Enjoy Ernie.:music: pioneervato 12-19-2008, 07:29 PM My SS package came today. I saw no reason to wait til Christmas and so I opened it. Clyde, er I mean Santa sent me a Wat-Air film washer and an Ilford Print Exposure Meter.:banana: Now just how did he know that I'm kind of an "old school" photographic picture developer type vato?? The film washer is going to do quite nicely in my home darkroom and will handle 4 35mm stainless steel reels or 2 120 reels. Perfect! As for the print exposure meter I will have to play with it and see just how it performs. Thanks Secret Santa! You did good. The darkroom is one of my favorite places to be. But apparently you knew that. :D clydeselsor 12-19-2008, 08:05 PM You're welcome Jesse! I am glad that you like them. Happy Christmas! I also received my SS gift and got myself a 5-6 records (in beautiful condition, I might add) including one from David Newman. :) Just took a closer look... I got a sealed Mike and the mechanics record, The Band - The Last Waltz (multi-record set filled with a whole list of notable artists), a Shure test record, a History of British Rock compilation also loaded with talent (and sealed), and the previously mentioned David "Fathead" Newman record. Nice job, SS from Marietta GA. :) I figured any LP by David "Fathead" Newman belongs in your collection. Glad you liked them, Dave. Terry (I don't want this SS thing to get too carried away so I always reveal myself and hope my SS will do the same. ) x_25 12-19-2008, 08:26 PM I am still waiting on mine. Vintageman1 12-20-2008, 09:36 AM Oh WOW!! My gift from my Secret Santa arrived today in my In Box. A gift certificate to SoundStage Direct. Last summer was the first time in years I was able to buy new L.P.'s as there are no dealers in the area I live in. We were visiting my son in T.O. and I was able to pick up a couple and it was quite a treat. I am going to have to look long and hard at the SoundStage site as this opportunity does not come very often for me. I spent a lot of time reading your posts and knew you had purchased a TT recently and you like to read. Well, I am at a loss as to the book thing and so I thought a nice 180 gram LP would be worth a spin or two. As for the photo it becomes an added personal touch. The photo is mounted on 100% rag board and the photo printed to archival standards on one of my personal favorite brand of photographic paper. No digital, all custom done in the darkroom. Then I made a few purchases from a few AKers. Then one very generous soul (Justen) sent me a box of about 60 LP's. Suddenly I didn't have room for them in my rack anymore. Then another great AKer (Specialidiot) made me a deal I couldn't turn down and I came into a Thorens TD165C. Then I picked up a Groovmaster so I could do some scrubbing without worrying about labels. I got two more unexpected gifts yesterday in the mail. I haven't a clue who it is as this stuff is coming from all over the states. The first gift my Chameleon album came from Maine. Now the last two the B-52's Funplex came from Massachusetts and a pair of , um, finger socks? came from Georgia. I couldn't stop laughing when I opened up the package. I'm sure they will keep my toes warm this cold and snowy winter. I have yet to open up the B-52's cd but the Chameleon album sounds awesome (I couldn't resist opening it up to listen to it. It was sealed) and the finger socks fit great! A little weird feeling though. :scratch2: They can't be all bad as they were made by Fins in Georgia! Regards, Bart the Elf "Dennydog, Santa here, glad you liked the gifts, Ho! Ho! Ho! :D That Chameleon LP was hard to track down but Santa had a lead in Maine that worked out just fine. Let me know how the production sound on that LP was because I heard the Chameleon group actually started their own label to distribute their music. I like the B52's as well so another Santa Elf in Mass. was able to send it out quickly even with all the bad weather. :zoom: I'm glad it got to you so fast. Since I don't have to deal with bad weather (Rudolph and Blitzen like much higher altitude), I headed to Georgia to check out the Toesocks from my northern friends Feelmax of Finland available from www.giftsfromfinland.com. They tell me that the ladies really love the Toesocks, especially all those multicolored stripe jobs. Why, even Mrs. Claus has a number of those thigh high toesocks to keep out that North Pole wind. Those and all the demo lingere from Victoria's Secret keeps this Santa very jolly!!  :smlove: Since your Minnesota winter isn't all that different from the Artic Circle, and because you've been so good this year (at least as far as I know :scratch2:), I thought the Artic toesocks with extra insulation would come in handy. They do say the funny foot/toe feeling goes away in a few days. So don't be afraid to show your toesocks off, the ladies just might think you're the coolest (or should I say warmest) guy in the neighborhood. :tresbon: Ho! Ho! I just better not let any of the lady's see me wearing them as I think they will run far, far away. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3232/3132602036_e7bdb5a23b.jpg I love the B50s Denny, that is some cool stuff right there.:thmbsp: BTW, I figured out my SS. Who would have thought to look at the return address.:D Thanks Wyaskit.:thmbsp: abpeep 12-24-2008, 07:37 PM I would just like to say thanks to my SS again. Been off since last Friday and I've been listening to that pile-o-vinyl that I got. Really some good listening there. I guess that I probably have one idea about who Santa is but...what the hell! Thanks again!!! Alan ejfud 12-25-2008, 09:10 AM Thanks for the cool posters SS! TWantiques 12-25-2008, 07:45 PM Received two Direct to Disc blues albums from me Secret Santa, luvvinvinyl. One by Wild Child Butler and the other by Lazy Lester. :thmbsp::thmbsp: I couldn't be more pleased. Thanks, Ernie. You're the best! Sorry I couldn't talk myself into opening them before today. Waiting til Xmas is what I do. If it's any consolation my family was on your side. Every day I was asked by one of them "Did you open your SS gift?" Merry Christmas my friend and thanks again. Terry luvvinvinyl 12-25-2008, 08:05 PM I congratulate you on your self-control. (Actually, I think you did that just to tick off everybody else, but that's ok, as long as you have fun.) I hope you enjoy those albums as much as I do. Those APO's are getting really scarce, but I think they are worth the search. Enjoy, Terry, and Merry Christmas, my friend. Gotta love the harp. doucanoe 12-26-2008, 03:39 PM The AK Secret Santa deal has never failed to please and this year was no exception! I love to cook. I have not made many references here to that effect, but there have been a couple I believe. My SS (I’m pretty sure I figured out who it is. I’ll see ya in the funny pages ;) ) this year may have caught that somewhere but I’m sure it took some much appreciated digging. My SS gift this year included a great cookbook from the Silverwater Café in Port Townsend Washington with three of their specialty spice blends. I already have my eye on a couple of the recipes, namely the Peanut Sauce and Prawns with Cilantro-Ginger-Lime Butter. I have been making my own Peanut Sauce, deconstructed from a local restaurant offering with reasonable success but have not been able to get it quite right. Mine has got the peanut and chillie parts right but is lacking something. These guys are using Apple Cider of all things their sauce and excited to give it a go. That’s going into a Thai Noodle/Chicken dish for this weekend. My kids have picked out the Prawn dish as something they want us to make for our New Years get-together. If that wasn’t enough, along with the above I got a couple of T-shirts. One being a very cool “T” from Quimper Sound record shop in Port Townsend and the other being , well, let’s just say that when the time is right, will be proudly worn soon and displayed on these pages. That one had me laugh’ in off and on all Christmas day :D Thanks SS, you outdid yourself RC luvvinvinyl 12-26-2008, 03:46 PM Ok, so has everybody posted in this thread with their gifts? Merry christmas Mark dnewma04 12-26-2008, 09:37 PM I also wanted to note that I received another gift a few days after the first from my SS. A very nice book about the Blue Note record label showing the cover art from many of the records. It's a very cool book that is fun to just sit back with and check out the records and make myself a wishlist. Thanks again, Terry! Dave pbda 12-27-2008, 12:22 AM Holy Crap Santa!!! One thing I want is a pack of rekkid sleeves. I want a rekkiid, too, and I've had bad luck with new releases. Got the AC/DC Black Ice album and it sounds distorted in a lot of places; also got the new Metallica, which I was warned about right here on AK. So I'm thinking of going another direction - not a big jazz fan and don't know much of anything about Miles Davis, but as sort of an introduction to Miles I'm leaning toward the 200g "Kind of Blue" - NOT the anniversary set. Anyone listened to this one that can comment? jaymanaa 01-02-2009, 07:02 PM Not sure if my package ever arrived at its destination...I hope so. I got an original speaker design that is truly one of a kind, and also shows off the fact that I am a drummer! My Secret Santa went way beyond the call of duty here!! This is so cool!!!!!! I now have it on my audio rack, where it is displayed with pride! I have included some pics: The bass drums have a full range driver in each and sounds good! The "heads" (grill cloth) isn't removable, but I am guessing that they house some T-B full range loudspeakers in them. Santa apparently now resides in Illinois! Thank you very much SS for this very thoughtful gift! :thmbsp: BEST gift of EVER. je MikeCh 01-10-2009, 10:03 AM If you don't already have it, the MFSL version of Time Passages is also worth owning. I also got a Sansui sign which now proudly graces the wall in my office. I wanted to thank the thoughtful member that took the time to read my posts and provide thoughtful gifts. Enjoy! :music: whyaskit 01-20-2009, 04:45 PM Here's hoping that everyone had a great holiday season. I am one of the few that waits for Christmas to open boxes and as such I did open all my presents on the 25th of December and then headed into work. Yeah work, the sick don't care if its a holiday or not. I work in the largest hospital in the state, in case you were wondering. In any event, between work, travel and my wife having her own surgery (nothing major and all is just fantastic!) I have not been on line a whole lot. So to get to the point, THANKS SECRET SANTA! http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=130579&stc=1&d=1232487859 This is the absolute best gift I got this Christmas. It is a number of sealed albums, Classics, Time Life, Deutsch Gramophone, RCA, CBS, Phillips, Mozart, Mahler, Strauss, a ton of great music! All wrapped so that a bomb would have had a hard time damaging these records. I have been spinning for a few weeks and still haven't listened to everything yet. It has been great. Thanks, you hit a homerun! :thmbsp::music::thmbsp::music: nosirrah 01-25-2009, 11:24 AM Every museum needs signage! Casey, I wasn't sure if you had a TT, but I figured that you had a CDP. So in the end I really get some HEAVY METAL:D beans 01-28-2009, 11:21 AM I got mine Monday... I had picked out MD Kind Of Blue (200g) and David Gilmour On An Island from Soundstage direct. I had never heard KoB but it sounds wonderful, even if that's not my favorite style of music... but it's supposedly the most successful jazz album of all time. Since it was done in the late fifties the stereo sound stage is very "discrete" with the drums coming out of the right channel, piano in the left, Miles' trumpet through both. The David Gilmour is pretty good but a lot more mellow than I expected based on his previous solo projects. One cool aspect is that he has Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) helping produce it and playing on some tracks. SQ is wonderful. Vintageman1 03-13-2009, 02:49 PM Well, I finally got around to ordering my Christmas gift from my secret Santa.
