View Full Version : Cleaning circuit boards - possible?

I took a can of compressed air to the inside of an old receiver to find quite a bit of dust is still stuck to the board. Quite a bit of Deoxit dripped onto part of it when cleaning some pots, making that part rather clean looking, and I'd like to know if it's possible to clear the rest of it up.

I did a bit of googling and came across a few different things. Some people said 90% alcohol, others said that was a bad idea. Some people said spraying Windex on the whole thing, that scares me as it was a geocities page. Yet more people said some sort of solvent like Flux Off and then using a paintbrush. I've heard others say "don't fix it if it's not broke". I got this receiver for pretty cheap, and mostly for a learning experience, so let's consider it broke.

Thinking a little more, I'm going to have to disconnect everything to do this. I don't know if I can remember how everything went back together...

Take a bunch of digital pictures,make notes-simple sketches,Get a service manual..Keep disassembly to a minimum...I hate it when i come up with spare parts..:D

CRC QD Electronics Cleaner is what I use. It's safe on all parts and leaves no residue. If I use alcohol on anything, it's 99+ % only.
