So how hard is it to reassemble the string-pulley system for the tuner if you take it apart? I notice the string is rung around the knob in a very exact spot such that it can wrap perfectly all the way to either end. Is this possible to replicate? Any advice here?

Take detailed pictures for reference before you take it apart. What model SX is it? There may be a service manual for it in AKs archives.

SX-650. Picture's will help for sure. I'm wondering if the string needs to be disconnected from the plastic wheel it's attached to at both ends...

You don't want to do that. GET THE MANUAL, it's 102 pages of pure gold, including an ENTIRE PAGE devoted to stringing the dial cord.
It's in the database for download.......

Amen. I've only done it a couple of times, and if I hadn't had the manuals I would still be trying to get those dial-strings back on correctly. It's worse than changing a timing belt.

Holy hell that's a lot of information. Too bad they only give you a 20 page book now that's only 20 pages because it's in 5 different languages.
