This is the Tuner I acquired along with an ASR-433 amp. I've recapped the amp and it sounds fantastic. I've turned my attention too the tuner and have an issue which I dont know how to address.
The tuner will power up and will tune AM very well. The FM is another story, it will tune but is very week. The tuning eye will barely move, but FM stations can be found and heard. Soooo where do I start. Tom something tells me you'll have some pretty good idea's.
Thanks

The first thing you should do is clean the tuning cap. Details here:

Next, test all the tuner tubes. If they are good, but you still have weak reception, wiggle each tube in it's socket a bit to check for oxidized contacts. If you find any, clean the contacts. A low E guitar string works well for this. Examine the pins on the tube and clean the tarnish off as necessary.
If none of this works it will need alignment and possibly service. If you don't have an RF stereo FM generator, a distortion analyzer and an oscilloscope, you will have to find a tech.

The 5 uF electrolytic at the FM detector is probably bad - a common problem with old tuners. Most of the other caps are ceramic, and probably OK. I don't have one of these tuners (yet) but I have two SR-445s needing attention...

OK, thanks for the idea's. I have thoroughly cleaned the tuner cap using an industrial electronics contact cleaner. This is a non residue type and the area appears much cleaner than it was. The 5uf electrolytic was replaced with a 4.7 will this difference have an adverse effect? I now have a much cleaner piece of equipment but it's not tuning any better that I can see. I'm open to other suggestions. Thanks again and in advance of further help.

Ok, here's the update: NO FM at all. The AM which would tune better than the FM prior to my cleaning attempts has also gotten much worse. Keep in mind I have no real knowledge of what makes these things tick so any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

Has the cleaner totally dried? If so, you need test equipment to troubleshoot it at this point. At minimum, you can test the tubes and eliminate that as a possible cause. It should not have gotten worse after cleaning it. But if you only used a non residue cleaner and nothing else, and didn't touch the fins, It shouldn't be anything you did, and the older tuners like this were constructed of materials that should not be harmed by any normal cleaner.

I've confirmed that all the tubes glow, which is as far as I know to go. The part in the photo is damaged as shown. Could this cause the reception problem? What is this part? (Some type of resistor)
Thanks

White vertical resistor? Measure it on the bottom terminals and compare to marked value - it's part of the power supply.

Tubes must be tested with a tube tester.

There are three terminals on the bottom of it. Should these all read the same value between them?

According to schematic, it's 330 and 1100 Ohms. So you should read 330, 1100, or 1430 Ohms, depending on which pair of terminals you measure.

Thanks guys I'll check it out.
