Folks, I need a new belt for my AR XA. I already purchased one that was advertised to be the correct size and yet it is VERY tight. I dusted it with baby powder and said a little prayer and it still is so tight that is bogs down the motor -- it won't start spinning without a push. I've had this belt on for a couple months now and the situation hasn't improved. Does anyone know of a current vendor that has the correct size?

I've ordered both the large belt (23.6) and the small (7.5) from Vintage Electronics, Turntablebasics and Union Electroninics, they are all alittle different in size !

It's true that the motor could be weak, but the table works great with my old belt, which is indeed longer than the new belt. So why would I purchase a new belt in the first place? The problem with the old belt is that it is ancient and leaves a nasty gummy substance on the pulley and sub-platter.

I will measure up my new and old belts tonight and report back with the sizes.

I checked my records and I've found that I did indeed purchase my new belt from the above vendor (they also sell on EBAY). I must say that I chose this vendor because they were so sure that they had the best product for an AR-AX. All I can say is that the belt they sent me is so tight that it pulls the entire suspended structure toward the motor and makes me think I am perhaps doing damage to the motor. I was hoping the belt would loosen up, but no luck so far. I will ask the next vendor to measure the belt before they send it out.

Hi,
Have you measured the belt that they sent you? To see if it is 23.6".

I'll measure both my old and new belts tonight. Once I get the belts measured up I will start following all the leads to vendors that you kind folks have been providing.

I buy my belts from Bob at Vintage Electronics.

I find them slightly tight, so I give them a good stretch first, then out them on the large part of the pulley for a couple of days. After that, I move to the small pulley (33rpm) and it always works fine.

At this point, I do not have a better source for belts. Bob's come closest to one's I used to get from Q Audio in Boston, which were the best.

I tend to use belts that are just tight enough to work, so that the belt only stretches about 3% to extend around the pulley. As you get tighter, you put massive stresses on the top motor bearing -- and that causes premature motor failure.

You might also try to get a little lubricant in the top motor bearing. Use a light machine oil.
