View Full Version : Is it ok to play with the pitch slider as if I was a DJ?
synclavier82 12-11-2008, 05:39 PM I'm not a DJ, but I was messing with the pitch slider on my 1200, and it was fun to manipulate the music by slowing and increasing the speed. Let's say I wanted to do this... a lot. Obviously this will increase wear and tear on my table, but what about my records and stylus? Any damage there?
Soundthought 12-11-2008, 06:39 PM Go for it.
It can be kinda fun, sometimes, moreso when friends or family are listening.
No harm done.
It was engineered to do just that.
It will not harm your vinyl. lest your turntable is improperly set up. (ie. tracking force, anti-skating, VTA)
And if those are off at all, then your vinyl is being damaged, to some degree, anyway.
When it comes to DJ tables, set up aside, the real damage comes from "scratching", as it were.
Cheers
John

steerpike2 12-11-2008, 08:11 PM No it is NOT OK! The turntable will survive just fine, but it's a socially abhorrent activity and you will be scorned.
virak 12-12-2008, 12:17 PM From my own experience, it will take around TEN years of daily use before the pitch slider shows any sign of wear. And even then, it will lock on the "zero" position. The replacement part cost less than $30, BTW. And scratching (with slipmats) does not wear out the turntable either. I've had the same pair of SL-1210Mk2's since -99, and except for a break in one cable, I've had no problems. Ten years of mixing and scratching on those turntables
Styli and records will of course see some wear (from scratching, not changes in pitch), but it's pretty dependent on how well you set up the TT.
Fred Longworth 12-12-2008, 12:36 PM If you're not a DJ and you play with the pitch slider, the turntable will explode, killing everyone in the neighborhood.

Things to do this weekend:
1. Buy cat food
2. Drink heavily
3. Invite ex over
4. Play with pitch slider on turntable
chadnliz 12-12-2008, 02:35 PM Wow asking this here is like asking your Pastor if its ok to masturbate in front of his wife.....sure it wont hurt anything but its not something that would be preferred behaivior.:lmao:
ponderbear 12-12-2008, 02:45 PM a roommate of mine routinely did this. It was like living in a nightclub with crappy but free entertainment. It could be very funny sometimes. Try Santana's Lotus on 78 sometime. Alvin and the Chipmunks should listen and take notes.
He did not explode, by the way, although nowadays he is in jail. It might be related, I'm not entirely sure.
vegabass25 12-12-2008, 03:01 PM you can get REAL DJ TTs relatively cheap nowadays though. Lowest ive seen was 160$ new for a stanton TT.

i have only one question.....what would be the point?
you want to play with the pitch control just because it's there?....or just because you can? (neither reason is a very good one).
why not just listen to your music as is?....with the pitch control set at "lock". i would think that's how it's supposed to be.
ponderbear 12-12-2008, 03:26 PM I thought my post might suggest one reason why- for the fun of it. I can't speak for the OP of course.
steerpike2 12-12-2008, 03:49 PM Should I be reading these two consecutive posts the way I am reading them?

KlipschFan61 12-12-2008, 03:53 PM I suppose playing with the pitch slider as a DJ would be better than playing with the pitch slider as a non DJ. ;)
At least you would have an excuse..:D

Dang! Beat me to it!
But I think the answer lies here...

ponderbear 12-12-2008, 04:05 PM You people would probably hurl if I told you the things I did with records and my turntable in college. hurl.

Boy I am sure we can find a way to incorporate that into my and others statements of poor timing and clever coincidence!
