Amigos,

I am a MP3 newbie, and I have listened to MP3 for the first time on a proper stereo (my own) and I must admit I am impressed, they don't sound bad at all.... I listened to mp3's compressed at 128 and 192, and found them to be good enough. Then again, I'm no audiophile :D

I now think it's perfectly viable to have a computer as a sound source and not sacrifice much at all in terms of sound quality, it has to a be reasonably silent machine though...

You can find pretty much any song you want on Kazaa, you can download the program at www.kazaa.com

I just dowloaded it - KEWL

What do you reckon is lowest "acceptable" quality?

Nooooooooooo!!!!

First things first ...

To avoid getting Kama into any trouble please do not make any direct reference to MP3 download sites, or the act of downloading FREE itself because if the long arm of the law visits us then we might be construed to be aider's and abetter's in this unlawful action.

As Thor says, call it "file sharing" and leave it at that.

Secondly,

Kazaa is good software, but the full version is loaded with a nasty worm (commonly called "spyware") which will generate annoying pop-ups on your system as well as reporting your site usage demographics remotely.

Download "Adaware" (do a google search for it - made by Lavasoft and it's freeware) and do a scan of your system and rid yourself of all the junk it finds.

Next get rid of Kazaa ... use the Windows "delete program" or just wipe the entire Kazaa directory from your HDD.

Finally get a copy of Kazaa-lite, which is essentially Kazaa minus the crapola. Google for Kazaa-lite and you will find it.

I thoroughly recommend you do this ... :)

Walt Kazaa is regularly discussed in yahoo news and such so talking about it is not illegal.

Ckelly I never DL anything below 128 anything higher is gravy but 128 is fine. You can also DL pOrN ;) I don't know about any spyware but Walt's advice is good, I limit the # of peeps who can DL from me to one and I always keep just a few things to share in my share folder cuz people might stop your DL if you don't share also but I don't let them have access to everything I have ;)

Also I have used all of the "sharing" programs since the Napster days and have never had a problem with my computer because of them and conservitively I have dl'ed probably 20 gigs of stuff from others :D Oops I mean shared ;)

I also suggest using the equalizer in Winamp and using the "rock" preset it seems to make everything sound better. Ckelly did you check out the marantz skin for winamp yet? It is nice, the silver one. Put the VU meters on top and it looks almost vintage? I also suggest using some of the visualiztion plug ins for win amp some are pretty knarly. Stay away from the plug ins that equalize the volume on all oyur MP3's tho like, tomsteady and such I noticed it degrades the sound on some songs. If you are looking for a remote to control winamp and volumes check this out http://www.atitech.ca/products/pc/remotewonder/index.html

goes thru walls an everything

Thor - talking about Kazaa is OK (as I talked about it too) ...

Talking about specific sites, and about specific downloads of MP3's is very dodgy ground.

Chris asked "which sites are good for downloading" in his second post in this thread ... I just wanted to steer the conversation away from that area.

Better to talk about "file sharing" ...

BTW - I have a fresh load of Tracey Lords pOrn available for "sharing" if you want ... :D :D :D :D ;)

OK, I'll be sharing files :D. I Downloaded ad-aware, as I fell into popup hell a couple of days ago and to get rid of all the CRAP that was in my machine i discovered it, and it works great!

Thor I have the Classic Marantz Skin and the Analog VU plugin

I have concerns about sharing my computer.... how safe is it?

You nominate one folder (call it "My shared folder") where you place all the files you are willing to share.

The rest is off limits to the rest of the Kazaa network.

Make sure you never save files to that folder that you aren't willing to share with others.

And DO download Kazaa lite and DELETE Kazaa. Otherwise when you use Kazaa it will keep reactivating/reinstalling the spyware on your system, and will have to use Adaware constantly to keep it all under control.

I assume you run some type of anti-virus software in the background? If not, get something and that should do. If you have cable also consider some freeware firewall software as well.

All will be well ...

PS - Thor is one one with the National Library of pOrn on the Kazaa network FYG. :D :D
