View Full Version : Pictures of your Town
ckelly 06-08-2004, 08:07 AM I just came back from a walk around town this evening playing with my new camera.
Here's the Result
I think a cool idea would be to show pix of where we all live....
ckelly 06-08-2004, 08:15 AM City Skyline from Circular Quay. This is where you can take a ferry to other parts of Sydney.
ckelly 06-08-2004, 08:25 AM This is the famous Coathanger :)
The blotches of light are Luna Park - Sydney's version of Coney Island....
ckelly 06-08-2004, 08:42 AM This is Hyde Park - a very pretty park in the heart of Sydney's CBD.
tentoze 06-08-2004, 09:59 AM For me, it's easier just to refer anyone to watch the Travel Channel. Every other program is about Las Vegas.
ckelly 06-08-2004, 10:04 AM You could say the same about sydney... but still nothing wrong with posting your own pix ;)
In a sense, its a cool way for each of us to have a new look at our city.
CK
WhiteSE 06-08-2004, 10:18 AM Ckelly,,,you live in the city? that is cool.....
I miss living in the city,,,,I was born in Los Angeles, grew up in Buenos Aires, then NYC, Baltimore also,,,living in smallish places can be a drag.....I miss just walking out of my apt and just walk around....And soon I am moving to the city of Nowhere, GA...G'd help me!!!!
mhardy6647 06-08-2004, 10:32 AM Don't think I have a picture of our little hamlet handy, but I do have some from Elbowgeek's vicinity (Bermuda). Actually, this photo was taken by me in Feb. to record some of the damage from last year's big hurricane. These are tennis courts at the (former) Sonesta, next to the hotel where we stay when we go to Bermuda. Perhaps you can see the erosion...
mhardy6647 06-08-2004, 10:36 AM On March 24 (still having effing snow at that point)!
ckelly 06-09-2004, 03:31 AM mhardy
That Picture of your street reminds me of when I lived in USA when I was a teenager. I lived in Westford, MA.
I dont miss the snow one bit... pretty to look at but no fun to shovel...
CK
mhardy6647 06-09-2004, 10:27 AM In Harvard... and herewith, a picture of the town's main intersection at the foot of the town common, taken in the fall of 2000 (as part of a school project my son was doing at the time). Quintessential little Massachusetts town, white clapboard churches, general store, and all.
Plus one of the best public school systems in the state.

JoZmo 06-11-2004, 09:02 AM A picture of the Boston Skyline from Mt. Hood in Melrose. Melrose is a 'bedroom community' approx. 10 mi. North of Boston.
Great little city, pop. approx. 27,000 plus, dry, no gin mills, close to the Lynn Fells Reservation, 2060 acres offering a retreat for city dwellers.
A picture of downtown Melrose after a snowstorm in 2003.
A picture of City Hall.
That's it kids. That concludes our travelogue for the day. :D

Why is it when I see something like that with a pearl paint job
I want to take a key out of my pocket? :p:

Your place looks nice :D
We get those idiots too - Norton St at night is like f@#ing "hero's drive" a sort of competition on who has the shiniest wheels and the most annoying subwoofer. Here most of the riced "Bling Bling" cars are japanese, thought you occasionally see nice cars like BMWs with paint jobs/big wheels like that and some lame numberplate like "2JELOOS" :puke:

ckelly 06-12-2004, 08:18 AM I'm gonna bore you guys to death with Sydney Pix ... and you know what? I dont care!

ckelly 06-12-2004, 08:31 AM I then decided to catch a ferry to Milsons Point, just across the bridge...

timoteus 04-26-2005, 02:05 AM My town is lost somewhere in the bottom of the fog. I took the picture this winter during a temperature inversion. It was about 70 degrees in the mountains and 50 degrees down in the valley. The horizon is 80 to 100 miles away.

valveman 04-26-2005, 03:47 AM cool pic timoteus!!

Wireworm5 04-28-2005, 06:49 AM Pitures of Saskatoon area.
This is of Beaver Creek 5 miles south of the city which is a nature preservation site. Birds that I'd never seen in the city reside here. And as I found out getting a close up picture of them ain't easy even with a 400 mm zoom. I only will post 2 as the others weren't close enough for detail.

mhardy6647 06-17-2008, 07:45 PM Not often that clear in San Jose. We lived in Milpitas, just at the edge of the foothills (a few hundred yards from the Hayward Fault) when we lived out there.
Brings back memories.
skippy_ps 06-18-2008, 05:51 PM This looking directly east from the office, which is located about a mile from the center of town. I thought the nearly continuous line of palm trees was interesting.

BroonsBane 06-18-2008, 06:16 PM Assorted shots from around town. Some of the shots include a local legend and landmark called The Sleeping Giant. Google it, it's really cool :)

Thanks. I just snapped that about 45 minutes ago when it was (and still is) 115 F outside. Yeah, probably not very many palm trees up there in the cold country. :p:

Not to derail this thread as there are some fantastic pictures here, but could someone tell me why I'm only seeing some of the pictures? I see the ones on the last page from Broonsbane and Onepixel but I don't see most of the rest. I've checked and I can't find anything going on here. Browser is usually Opera but I tried in Explorer also and no difference. Images are turned on in my profile (or I couldn't see the pics that I can).
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'd love to see the rest. Like I said, I don't want to derail so please reply via PM if you can help and we'll keep this on topic.
Thanks!
Ray
And just to show I want to stay on topic, here's one from me. I don't have a town. It's about 3 miles to a town of ~50 people, 7 to the nearest gas station/general store, and 25 to the nearest real grocery store. This is off my back deck at sunrise.

Ray:
It's not a problem with you or your computer. Sometime in the past and I don't recall exactly when, many pictures from older threads were lost. Seems like it was some kind of server problem or something that caused it.
Terry
skippy_ps 06-18-2008, 07:22 PM Ray, there are thumbnails posted by Telecolor, Murray and Meggy. 1, 1 and 2. Plus the links posted by Carl and BB.
BTW, nice pic of your pond. Baptismals?
Murray
Edit: What Terry said. I thought Ray meant just on this page.
onepixel 06-18-2008, 07:57 PM Wow a wonderful diversity of neighborhoods... I like the nature ones best!
skippy_ps 06-18-2008, 08:08 PM Yep. Nothing is more natual than asphalt - petroleum and rocks.

onepixel 06-18-2008, 08:11 PM Murray... good thing you don't live in Petroleum Springs.

Ah, thanks Terry. I hadn't even looked at the dates and put them together with the missing pictures.
BTW, nice pic of your pond. Baptismals?
Thanks. I don't know if you'd want to do a Baptism in that particular pond. It's built on the side of a hill and the bank goes almost straight down. It's 35' deep. You can walk out about 6' and you're neck deep. Another step and you're swimming. However, you can dive off the pier without fear of breaking your neck. At least on the bottom. If you hit one of the catfish you might get hurt.

fmueller 06-19-2008, 06:04 PM Here are a few shots of Kent, OH, where I live now. Not a place that's easy to make look scenic. I took these photos to be used for the web site of my wife's research group some time ago.

meggy 06-19-2008, 10:06 PM nice shot of camelback, megs. i've been up and down it many times over the years.
Thanks. That's my refuge. I estimate I've made the trip a good 2000 times. Been pretty much over every inch of that mountain.
Wow! What a view from the pool.:thmbsp:
Thank you. We got really lucky in finding the house and we re-did the pool. We're exactly 1 mile from the mountain. You know who we bought the house from? The daughter of the owner of the Arizona Cardinals. What's really weird is she also had two dobermans (just like us).
more info than anyone wanted, but WTH.

fmueller 06-20-2008, 12:35 AM .....really nice shots, FMueller....did you compensate the exposure for the night shots?.....
The night I took those three shots I went through at least three rolls of film in the Circular Quay area in Sydney. The place around the famous opera house is just magic for night shots! I bracketed exposure to make sure I got my shots, but curiously the camera's automatic exposure was spot on in all cases! I was using my trusty old Minolta XD-7 that night - my favorite, and most used camera for many, many years. Since I got my Canon Digital Rebel XT it's collecting dust, but slide film is just too expensive and scanning it is a royal PITA :sigh:
Here is another night shot taken with the XD-7 and MD 50mm 1.4 lens. It shows the Houses of Parliament in London. I had no tripod on that trip, so I propped up the camera with tissues on the wall of the Thames embankment, f=1.4, A-mode, no exposure compensation.

Fred Sanford 06-20-2008, 08:23 AM We're about a mile from "town", which is essentially a Post Office, a Church, a Bed 'n' Breakfast, and a scrapbooking store. We're about 8 miles from the "city", which is about 22,000 people unless the University is populated, in that case it's about 44,000 people. Not what we're used to in NYC, which is a good thing.
Here's the view from our front deck, and then the reverse view from the Blue Ridge down towards the valley. The pale blue hump on the horizon over the passenger seat of the bike is the hill we live on.

fmueller 06-20-2008, 10:55 AM That first shot with the view from your deck is beautiful, Fred! Just wants to make me sit on that deck and enjoy some fresh bread rolls with jam and a good cup of coffee!
Some classical music would be nice with that - maybe Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'! Have you got some nice outdoor speakers installed on that deck, or do you wheel you main rig out for those occasions? :D

Thanks, that view was certainly a selling point. My living room windows are right there, and you can easily hear my bi-amped JBL 4333As from the deck...
Only the local systems are up, the house system is still under way. Front deck will likely get a nice NIB pair of Sonance Mariners, rear deck has some KLH now but will probably get four Canton Patio 160s. Lots of work still to do on the house wiring & system programming.

I only see things like that if I get the expensive room when on vacation!

skippy_ps 06-21-2008, 03:38 PM In contrast to the water so green..., here's a pic of some desert energy production. This is looking northwest, about 1/2 mile south of I-10.
For perspective, the dark area in the front of the building that is behind the generator in the center, is about 7' high.
I just snapped this pic this morning.

Camera is a Pentax K100D. Lens is a old Takumar-A 70-200 with UV filter. Effective length on a digital SLR is 300mm. Shot was taken from the gunwale of my boat going about 35 mph. About 1 in 10 comes out this nice. Stabilization seems to help, but you bounce around awful bad. That lens is a real sleeper, IMO.
