One stinkin' receiver!

Well, you guys did it now. You made me snag a SX-1010 off the Bay. Maybe she ain't the prettiest thing around but she's my first Pioneer (hard to believe, isn't it?)

Anyway, here's the problem. When I got it home last night, I powered it up for a half hour or so to check DC offsets (1.4 and 5.6) and when that puppy warmed up, man did it REEK! I've read about equipment that came from "smoker's homes", but hell, I'm a smoker and none of my stuff smells anything like that! So the first thing I gotta do is get rid of the odor. I suppose I should clean all the boards as best I can and use something on the cabinet.

Anybody else here have that problem? What did you use and how did it work? Once she's cleaned up I'll post some NUDIES!

I don't have much personel experience with the stuff, but if you search the forums for 'cigarette' there are several threads with good reading on the subject.

It's amazing just how nasty old cigarette smoke can become after it has settled in and aged for a few years.
I can still remember walking through the recruit smoking room in navy boot-camp great lakes, while on watch, and feeling sick from the 'aroma'. Can't really bitch though, I enjoy a good cigar once in awhile. :dunno:

I did some wipin' and brushin' and it's way better than last night. I have it hooked up to my original Infinity 4000A's--30 yr. old receiver playing through 30 yr. old speakers. My God! This sounds really good! It's like being in '74 again. My little 25 watt Kenwood never pumped the bass like this. I can't wait to hook it up to the new CS99a's. The 1986 JVC Computer Controlled blah blah blah is coming down!

welcome to ak and welcome to whats fast becoming the 1010 owners club my friend.
Nice that we all have another happy bunnie listerning to another mighty 1010....If anyone else out there is wanting a 1010 nows the time...today!! not tomorrow!! as there ain't enough 1010's in great condition or working to go around I fear..So as there say buy now to avoid disapiontment later....

I would have as many as I could find, but alas I can't find them here...lol

I went through just about the same scenario.
I had a 1986 JVC receiver it was a RX8V.
One day I ran across a crippled Sx1250 receiver.
After I finished repairing it I started playing it in
the shop until one night after a storm. My JVC
got fried so I took the 1250 home and hooked it
up. To this day the JVC still sits in storage. After
listening to the Pioneer I never had the urge to fix it.
There is just too much of a difference in sound to
make it worth my while.

Welcome to the club of guys compelled to buy a sx-1010 after following AK for a while! See my thread here:

Fortunately, mine was not from a smoker. Currently I am working on the veneer case. I'll stain it a little so that the tone better matches the wood trim on the front face.
Eventually I'll modify the voltage regulator board and do a thorough check up to make sure it is up to spec (I don't have the gear for the FM alignment though...)
