View Full Version : Advent 5002 crossover recapping: odd values and substitutes?

I'm going to recap my Advent 5002 speakers (the ones without a switch), but they have some odd cap values in there: 7uF and 32uF. Both are electrolytic. I was looking at Mouser, and they have no 7uF or 32uF caps. I know you can wire caps in parallel to gain the same capacitance as 7uF, but are slightly different values ok? I found tons of 6.8uF caps, well within a 20% tolerance of 7uF. Is that an ok substitute? Worst comes to worst, I could always wire seven 1uF caps in parallel. Same thing applies to the 32uF cap, I found lots of 33uF caps, but no 32uF. Thanks!

6.8 and 33uf are fine.
On the 6.8 I would suggest a poly non polar. The 33 is kind of high value for poly and is probably not in the signal path anyway so a good quality np lytic is most likely ok.

I'm using electrolytics for both, as I think the originals are electrolytic as well. However, I will look into a poly cap if it doesn't turn out to be insanely expensive. Thanks!

I would suggest you are better off with these caps. You can use a 30uf cap too. You just want to stay within %20 of the uf rating. However, you want to meet or exceed the voltage rating:

Wait, by poly do you mean polyester or polypropylene? I'm new to the film cap business. :D

Polypros are what you want and you can find them on the link I just gave.

Dayton poly caps are insanely cheap. That's what I use in a lot of economy crossover rebuilds unless I am using Solen or Sonicaps. Right now Parts Express has a great freight deal....free freight when you spend $49. I can spend that easily! I keep finding other things I need so it's hard to place the order.

Are the crossovers the same on both speakers? I recapped my buddy's 5002's and it had a slightly different crossover on each one. I think the serial numbers were a few thousand #'s apart.

Just one thing. If you order the 33uf in polypropelene it will be huge. You may have enough room but check size first.

I didn't order the poly 33uF cap, too expensive! However, I did order 2 7uF solen polys from Parts Express. :D The 33uF I ordered from Mouser along with some other stuff I needed... and I made sure it was bipolar. I can hardly wait!

Hope you like it. Should liven everything up and make your feet start tapping?

As an aside. Mousers carrys polys also. You probably already know this.

Yep, I saw that Mouser carries polys, but they didn't come in audio varieties, and the ones at parts express were cheaper anyway. The 33uF cap addition to my order didn't go through at Mouser, so it looks like I have to wait for another batch of stuff. :tears: Can't wait for the films, though!

You can always get the 33's. I don't think it will make much difference in the sound.
PE also sells non polar lytics.
Those polys are pretty resonable at PE and they really are good folks.
