View Full Version : My Music Buying Addiction Is Cured
JDaniel 06-08-2004, 09:09 PM And just how did I break this addictive, money-sucking habit? How do I know I'm cured?
I've had this mad money sitting in my Paypal account for a good while now. Some leftover NFL wagers won. I've been trying to figure out how to spend it on music. I've watched ebay auctions, but have resisted. I've perused half.com, and resisted making purchases.
So how does one kick this over-buying habit? I used the money to buy a new set of golf clubs. Something much less addictive, and money-sucking, less habit-forming.
And while I have thousands of cds, lps etc, I only have at last count four sets of irons, 5 or 6 sets of woods, about a dozen drivers and putters, 3 or 4 golf bags, and a few miscellaneous wedges. See - that adds up to much less than thousands.:D :D :D :D
Good lord - I'm worse than Dave. I have three addictive, money-sucking, time-consuming, habit-forming hobbies - music, golf, and fishing. I'm a basket-case.

Dave918 06-08-2004, 09:35 PM He He He :D
Wait, I can't laugh. I just ordered another pair of Jean-Marie Reynaud Twin MKIII Loudspeakers and signed up to demo the Almarro A205A integrated amplifier, and you what that will lead to! Plus I have 3 shipments of CDs coming!
I gotta stop talking to Dr. Evil...er...I mean BrianB, and listening to you guys! Well we know that's not going to happen, so I guess that retirement date will just keep slipping further out.
If I pick up another addictive, money-sucking, time-consuming, habit-forming hobby I will really be in trouble!

JDaniel 06-08-2004, 09:52 PM Dave - maybe we can help each other out. Perhaps you can send me your old speakers that are being replaced, and I can send you the golf clubs that I'm replacing. Or how about some quality vintage audio receivers? Got more than I know what to do with right now.
But at least the annual JD family garage sale is coming up this Sat. My annual chance to get rid of a bunch of things. Whatever is left over at noon on Saturday gets taken to the local thrift store. Nothing comes back inside.
The money we'll make could be well spent on music, or golf clubs, or fishing equipment. But instead, I somehow started something that can't be stopped. For three years running, the kids get to keep all the money (if they work at the sale).

What's a fellow Vol fan doing in the heart of enemy territory (alaBAMA)? Seems like your 4th hobby would be ducking bird shot.
opt80 06-08-2004, 09:59 PM Well let's see Jeff,Directly you can not die or cause death by buying music, fishing or playing golf.
There are worse addictions IMHO.
What brand of clubs did you get?

Welcome aboard the AK train bluelight. Good lord I need another vol fan around here. Yep - enemy territory allright. But in the six years I've lived here, we've pretty much owned Bama. So it's not been too bad. Between the Dubose and Mike Price debacles, Bama fans aren't putting anybody in the cross-hairs. I think it has finally sunk in that "da bear ain't coming back."
What part of Middle TN are you from? I'm from the Tri-Cities, and lived in Knoxville for 10 years. Went to undergraduate and grad school at UT. I was just in Knoxville this weekend for a golf outing and the Nationwide tour event at Fox Den CC.

Alan - I've always been partial to MacGregor and Wilson sticks. I've played them my entire life. I currently play some Wilson Staff irons. I just bought some Wilson Staff Robert Mendrella Fat Shaft Irons. I've always wanted to try the fat shaft clubs, and now I'll have the opportunity. I also build clubs, and tinker around with changing my own shafts, grips etc.
Need some clubs Alan. The price is right. Free is about as cheap as I can go.

opt80 06-08-2004, 10:39 PM Thanks Jeff, but I gave up golf about 10 yrs ago. Here on PEI average membership is 1K for a decent course.Of course there are hayfields for cheaper but you have to bring your own mower

I live in Tullahoma about 8 miles from the Jack Daniels Distillery and about 4 miles from the George Dickel Distillery. If the wind is blowing just right it sure does smell sweet here in God's country.
This time of year I start to get a little anxious for football season to start. Athlon magazine hits the stands and I break out my old UT tapes from the 80's so I can listen to John Ward.
Bought a Akai Hi-Fi VCR back then to tape off the games and it had a simulcast dubbing feature. You could tape the football games while recording the radio broadcast. Nothing against Bob Kesling and crew but no one compared to John and Bill.
Visited east Tennessee many times and my daughter recently lived in Louisville, just outside Knoxville. East Tennessee truly is God's country. Some of the best people in the world live in that area. Always friendly, polite and hospitable.

bluelight - yes, I too miss John Ward. He defined the word class. We had season tickets from about 1964 - 1992. If I wasn't at a game in person, we always watched the tv with the sound off, and the radio blaring John Ward "GIVE HIM SIX....TOUCHDOWN BIG ORANGE". We still take the kids up to 2 or 3 games/year, and try to catch the Bama/Auburn game when in state.
Good to have you around. Post some here about music or other things.

mech986 06-09-2004, 11:34 AM Hi JD,
I could be interested in some new "vintage" clubs! Could you tell me your height and arm length so I could get an idea whether your clubs might fit my bodybuild? I'm 5' 9" and usually hit with regular flex or stiff flex depending on the stick. Unfortunately, haven't been able to play much last few years due to other things (this vintage stereo hobby is also a time consuming issue :o )
Let me know what you've got available. Free (shipping extra) always gets my attention! My football affilitions are Pac10 (UCLA, Cal) and Big 12 (MSU). So not much to talk about lately.
Regards,
Bart
