View Full Version : Vintage Teac/Belden cables
zenith2134 12-16-2008, 06:49 PM I found some old RCA cables that look well-made and of a high quality. I was hoping someone could share info on them.
They read; TEAC Professional Series Low Capacitance Cable by Belden KG.
The connectors needed some cleaning to shine but they appear to be much better than most cables from this time.....(early 80s?)
So, is this one of those things where even the lowest grade cables of today will outperform them, or are they worth a shot?
Honestly, I connected my tuner to my integrated with them and couldn't detect any differences. (I was using Monster directional cables, $40 for 3 feet)
GaryP 12-16-2008, 08:42 PM I'd test them before playing to make sure there are no shorts.
But you've heard them already, right? I've never heard of them... have fun and post any more findings!

There's your answer.
Fred Sanford 12-16-2008, 08:57 PM Belden's generally great cable, I've got miles of it still in use after 20+ years. Clean it and test it and hook it up.

zenith2134 12-17-2008, 12:28 PM Okay, I used Brasso followed by Isopropyl Alcohol followed by DeOxit Gold. (It didn't appear as if the connections were plated so I figured Brasso would be a good choice of cleaner)
I have these running in between my tuner and integrated and they sound better now that I cleaned em up.
But, again, nothing earth-shattering. Slightly better bass extension. I would recommend this cable, especially since you can probably find it free with a lot of older gear. :thmbsp:
premiumplus 12-29-2008, 05:31 PM The cables that came with my turntable, a PL-71 (see avatar) measured the lowest in capacitance of any of my cables in my home/shop! They're 33 years old and still rockin...I cleaned them up with a shot of DeOxit and they're good to go
GaryP 12-29-2008, 07:25 PM Man, be careful people! I had a pair of older cables and my stereo started thumping strangely.... intermittent.... blew a tube!!! It was the crappy cable. :(
NYListens 12-29-2008, 08:19 PM Belden is a very large manufacturer of cables. Much commercial cable used by bands, television stations, etc are manufactured by Belden. There is a good chance that the cable television line hooked up to your house was manufactured by them.

Belden is one of those "no-name" companies that are considered part of the "Industry Standard" for broadcast, commercial and live sound. They own West Penn, another company few here, if they never hear about the pro audio stuff, will ever know.
google is your friend. http://www.belden.com/

Interconnects? I doubt it was the cable unless it caused the preamp to become unstable. You should be able to short the input + to ground without any problems. Output, not so much.
hytiger 12-30-2008, 06:34 PM Give it a go, what have you got to lose?
Could always take it to your local audio shop, & audition it alongside the best cable they sell :)

Yeah, that ought to piss them off. specially when the pricey stuff sounds worse. I'd like to hear them compared with the AudioQuest SooperDooper line, with the batteries. I mean, at $7200 for a 6' pair (apparently, they charge by the volt, because those have six 12V batteries), they MUST sound better, right?

I'd love to play with a pair of those, but have yet to find anyone/anywhere that has got them.
