View Full Version : A man and his dog

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying
the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been
dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side
of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was
broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch
that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked
like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as
he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought
right up."

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the
traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and
continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he
came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had
never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a
tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an
old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself,
then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who
was standing by the tree.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road
said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope.
That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave
their best friends behind."

I remember that episode. This actor was absolutely the best when it come to playing a character based on being a simple (not stupid nor ignorant) person with good and innocent intentions.

Leadfoot, that's a great story.

Good tale, especially for dog owners. I'm about to head out for a walk with my two soon.

Great story. I haven't read it in a while. Thanks.

My dog, Buddy, died November '06, at age 13. He was a Golden Retriever. The sweetest and most gentle dog in the world.

I just can't seem to bring myself to get another dog.

I was the same way. I didn't want another because I didn't want the pain of losing another. The little red guy above was under my truck when I came home one day and stayed for 3 days so I fed him. Finally found his owner but he wouldnt stay. He dug out and came back to me. The owner gave him to me. I loved the red heeler so much I wanted another so I bought a blue. They are very active and just too much fun not to mention smart. I wouldn't take for either. What a pair LOL

That's one heck of a story! So he adopted you. In this case, I, too, would keep the dog.

If I do decide to get another dog, well, I'm gonna get 2 Goldens.

Yes one year later and almost to the day I lost Prince.
I think it's good for a dog to have a playmate and if one is good two must be better. :thmbsp:

Sorry Leadfoot, my chihuahua doesn't agree with this theory. Probably because my new Yorkie drags him off the couch, across the bed or across the room by his tail.

The poor chihuahua just looks at me like "WHY did you bring that pest into the house?!?!?" :D

Apparently they will stop just long enough to pose for the camera. :D

I'd get the Goldens as pups. Then, they can figure out who'll win the pissing contest. But, really, I know a couple who have 2 of em and they get along beautifully. They are just very gentle, loving dogs. They love everybody, other dogs included.

Now, a terrier and a chihuahua, not so much.

If Freckles (my English Cocker Spaniel ) Or Sally my Beagle, Border collie, Springer happened to be there I would have to go find water. They were both the BEST.

Great story! Yup, that's the way it should be! I've got some good dogs waiting on me at the Rainbow Bridge too! The only thing that bothers me is that if I go to Heaven, I won't know many folks! :scratch2:

Welcome Leadfoot !
Merry Christmas(Hannuka,Kwanza) to all and yours' .
I remember seeing that same episode years ago . My wife and I have been charged with taking care of 6 Dogs ,a 15 year old cat , and a bird .
All of them are Rescue and Rehabed whether it was sickness or abuse .
Our latest addition is a Pure Bred Sheltie we named Chipper . We don't seem to have a choice they show up either on our doorstep or front yard (as with the Cockatiel-Petey who landed in our yard and walked straight up to my missus climbed up her hand and came in) . I hope God has kept our loved 4-legged family for us .
If we could we'd rescue horses but we can't afford the vet bills or feed . People are doing some awful things to horses with the economy taking a $h!te . Kills us . We have 7 acres and we'd love to see horses grazing again . We lived in the Nevada Desert (Dayton-Down the"hill" from Virginia City) and we had wild Mustangs that grazed our property . They're all pretty well gone now , rounded up as a nuisance .
