Received two new pieces of vinyl for X-mas. One of them I was really excited about; The Pretenders~Break up the Concrete. being a huge fan of the band and, hearing them recently on T.V. performing some stuff from the new album, I was really looking forward to getting the whole thing. So I unwrap it, (two ten inch LP's and a CD), put it on the platter, drop the arm and, WTF!! It sounded like it was recorded in a basement with a couple of Rat-Shack Hi-z mics on a portable children's cassette player. No highs, no definition, muddy lows. I'm thinking there's something wrong with my gear so, I put on Brothers in Arms (always a good reference LP) and it sound fine, it's not my system. So next I thought I'd try the CD and see if it was as bad, yep, sounds horrible. I'm thinking of taking it back and exchanging it for another copy, maybe mine was defective? I kind of doubt it though because the CD sounded so bad too. What's up with the recording industry these days? Do they just not care any more? Do they figure most people won't know the difference because the majority of people listen to new stuff on Ipods and MP3's?
BTW, the other record, (The Cure~4:13 Dream, double album), sounds great and, I'm listening to it as I write this.

I think that new vinyl will be hit or miss in sound quality for a while as the new vinyl industries try to re-capture the knowledge base that has been lost over the years.

Or it could just be a lousy mix... *looks sideways at Death Magnetic...*

Glad to hear the Cure 4:13 sounds good. I was going to pick that one up myself.

Albums are hit and miss for sound quality. It all depends on who mixed it. If it was mixed by the original engineer its okay but someone new take your chances. The mobile fidelity album of Dark side of the moon and the originals are great. But the new one by doug sax was supposed to be awesome but it stinks if you ask me.
