View Full Version : There's an a$$ for every seat...
marantzfan 12-29-2008, 02:25 PM Just got off the phone with a guy selling a Marantz "Amplifyer" (his misspelling, not mine) for $300. I called to check it out only to find out it's just a lil old 1030, definately not worth even a third of his asking price.
I told the man that I wasn't interested but I suggested he check finished ebay auctions for a 1030 to get an idea about how to price this amp because his price was high.
The man said it didn't matter he paid about $300 for it when it was new (a lie). He then tells me that his price makes sense, because his father was a used car salesman, and that he had an old saying; "There's an ass for every seat!"...
Just thought I'd share that invaluable nugget of information with you all...Free of charge.
MAXZ28 12-29-2008, 02:30 PM Classic ass-ness! Thanks for sharing! :thmbsp:

toxcrusadr 12-29-2008, 02:41 PM Sounds like a nutball!
It is, however, shocking what the original prices were on some of this stuff. I bought an MCS seperates system they other day - int. amp, tuner, tape deck, TT. It was fairly high end for MCS (JC Penney) at the time, but still, it's MCS. Guy paid over $700 for it in the early 80s! Had the original receipt.
dew042 12-29-2008, 03:47 PM That's 30 REAL watts of crap.
dew.
Toasted Almond 12-29-2008, 04:41 PM I hope he was sitting when he made that statement. I'd hate to think that boy was roaming around the countryside looking for a place to plop his ass. You keep him out there.
Mark W. 12-29-2008, 04:47 PM Actually he's right. I did a lot of camera collecting before i came into the light and started hidding my office floor under stereo gear. And there was a guy on ebay who had amazing photo's of the most average CANON manual focus gear you ever wanted to see. And he asked about 25% more for it then any one else he wrote long bullshit descriptions and know what I think everything he offered sold! At the very same time a much nicer condition lens or body or accessory exactly the same would sell for less.
I could never figure it out.
There is also a Guy in Germany called A*****l on eBay that does the same thing with Leica gear. And yet he sells all of it for 25% more then the market.

There's something to be said for decent photos and a good - honest - description.
I bought a cheap light tent when I was selling off my gear and really put some effort into the photos. Suddenly, my auctions were ending for a good bit more than the average auction with a simple snapshot.
veloceleste 12-29-2008, 09:29 PM Another used car salesman saying: "If you think you got a deal, you got a deal!"
Arkay 12-29-2008, 09:47 PM It seems too much to assk for verassity in a ssalesman! One would assume that he had assembled all the facts before assking such a price. But ... Aw, heck, this is stupid. I'll stop. :D
If someone is a good enough salesperson to persuade someone else to pay a high price for an item, whether through a well-written description, attractive pictures, or other means, then perhaps they have "earned" it. After all, there is no coercion involved, and the buyer is willingly paying over the money because they believe it is a price worth paying. That said, I think there are ethical limits as to how much one should be able to overcharge before it becomes unfair and immoral. And one should always be truthful and accurate in descriptions of the condition of an item, etc...
I've encountered people asking ridiculous prices for rubbish, often out of ignorance of real value combined with a fear of being cheated. I figure they balance out the people who charge well below market value, and give us the occasional opportunities for bargains. No one is pointing a gun to my head and saying "Buy it!", so it is always a personal choice to buy one item offered, and walk away from another that is overpriced.
marantzfan 12-31-2008, 04:49 PM Apparantly, he hasn't found the ass yet, and he was offended by my call:

Vintage Marantz Amplifyer Model 1030, 100 watts. Bought new in late 70's or early 80's. Has worked without a flaw ever since. I do not need to sell but thinking of getting a new one. Asking $300. I may consider trades. For those of you who want to inform me that they are not interested in buying it but just called to tell me price is to much, get a life and don't waste both of our time. Yes, I know we live in America, but it's my item and I will ask any price I want that I think is reasonable and worth selling. Call if you are ONLY INTERESTED in BUYING at 480-656-2465 8am-8pm. I do not need an education and I do not return calls especially if they are long distance. If YOU are interested in the item, you should call me back. Thank you!
