Picked up (or struggled to pick up) this Yamaha CDX-1050 CD player today for pocket change at the thrift. At first I thought it was stuck to the shelf or something but it turns out that it's just a heavy beast! Close to 20lbs?

The drawer would not open automatically so I am in the process of putting in a new belt. The player plays perfectly though and sounds amazing through the headphone jack.

Taking it apart revealed why it's so heavy. The case is double layer all the way around. The base plate must be 1/8" thick and solid steel -3-4lbs on its own. The CD tray appears to be extruded aluminum? with heavy rubber bumpers. Impressive build quality throughout.

Capacitors seem to be better than average. Some "ELNA For Audio" and Nichicon MUSE caps.

Anyway, some pics below. I'll post another when it's all put back together.

Any info on this player would be great. I'm also curious about original sale price. I don't imagine this was a cheap player.

Very nice clean player there, interesting double skinned case too. I'm guessing the heavy base plate is to damp vibration.

I'm quite a fan of Yamaha CDPs actually...even their cheaper models (late 80's) are built nicely for the price.

I found a silver version of this player online with wood cheeks (picture below) so I figured "why not". Today she is getting some oiled Oak cheeks to match my DIY gear. Also my first attempt at veneer...even though it's only iron on tape to cover the end-grain.

Test fit before oiling.

Very nice! Looks comparable to the Denon DCD 1500 series - I just found a 1520 that is built very similar, double skin all around with a 23 lb curb wt. They don't make em like that anymore.

Nice score.

Yes the CDX-1050 is with it's 10 kg part of the monster lineup from Yamaha, it came after the CDX-1030 with new DAC and also a new drawer (it shares this with the CDX-1060).

"ELNA For Audio" and Nichicon MUSE caps was pritty much standart in Yamahas better gear. But you can read more about the player in the CDX thread in the digital forum.
