Jazz giant Freddie Hubbard died today at Sherman Oaks Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 70.

Another one gone. 2008 has taken with it many fine musicians, it seems. Rest in peace, Freddie.

Here's the LA Times obit:

One of the great trumpet players. He signed my lp "Ready for Freddie" a few years ago. This is a very sad day and a great loss for the jazz world and all of us.

RIP Freddie Hubbard and thank you for all the music you made. I usually listen to something with Freddie playing on it at least once a week anyway. Tonight it's:

Freddie Hubbard- Hub-Tones
Herbie Hancock- Maiden Voyage

I liked his style better than I liked Miles.

Vaya con dios Freddie.

RIP Mr Hubbard. A huge loss...second only to Miles, Freddie was influential in so many ways I can't begin to express it. I listen to Freddie alot and this weekend I will spin many titles in his honor.

Freddie was right there with Miles and Lee Morgan in the early 60's...as I've gotten older, I've gravitated more to the early stuff (Open Sesame, Hub Cap) than the later CTI stuff (Straight Life, Red Clay)...

I agree, Art...I will be spinning some Freddie this weekend. May he rest in peace...

First got turned on to Freddie Hubbard through, The Quintet VSOP live album. Some great playing on those records. Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Freddie Hubbard. Worth seeking out.
Another of the lions of jazz leaving us, RIP.

Liked his early music. I was not familar with his later stuff. I am stucked in the fifties and sixties. He was a great trumpeter. Rest In Peace Fred.
