View Full Version : Blind Faith
Ol' Ken 12-29-2008, 07:07 PM I picked up a copy of the 180gm reissue of the album with the original cover art yesterday. The last time I heard it was on a buddies brand spanking new SX1010, Advents and a Kenwood marble table. Previously it was heard on various RCA/ Sears consoles. The record sounds better than I can recall, although that period of time was a little hazy for me:scratch2:
Jailtime 12-29-2008, 07:12 PM That's Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce's band right after Cream broke up in '69, right? I might have to give a listen to Blind Faith...pretty big fan of Clapton and Bruce. :music:
silverwad 12-29-2008, 07:16 PM :music:I have the MoFi Blind Faith CD....historical album ...and with Steve Winwood also.....Clapton and Wiinwood.......I also sympathize with those bong memories...............
meggy 12-29-2008, 07:23 PM Plus Ginger Baker!!!
Ol' Ken 12-29-2008, 07:23 PM Baker/Clapton/Winwood/Grech. The band morphed into Ginger Baker's Airforce
elgato8905 12-29-2008, 07:27 PM Is that album a rarity? I picked an original one up in a record score yesterday. It's the one with the naked girl on the cover right?
pmsummer 12-29-2008, 07:44 PM Is that album a rarity? I picked an original one up in a record score yesterday. It's the one with the naked girl on the cover right?
"Girl" would be correct.
meggy 12-29-2008, 07:55 PM Not too rare but hard to find in NM or restorable shape. There's actually two different covers. It's been recently re-released on vinyl with the "naked girl" cover. Another example of the OP sounding better than the re-release, IMO. I believe it's on MOFI CD, too.

Mine has the picture like yours on the back and the naked girl on the front. It is on the Polydor (RSO???)label.
I have the early cd release with a bonus track called "spending all my days" di they add that to the vinyl? there was also a 2 cd deluxe edition I never bought. cant remember what the extras were, but the bonus track on my cd was not one of them. how odd......
Ed in Tx 12-29-2008, 08:08 PM "Can't Find My Way Home".. cymbal crashes and sizzle symbols good "trackability" test for your cartridge/stylus!
Mystic 12-29-2008, 08:37 PM "Girl" would be correct.
Very droll, PM.
nitrous 12-29-2008, 08:37 PM Hey, I saw them live at MSG in '69. The first group on was Free, followed by Delannie & Bonnie & Friends. Great show. Immediately after the concert, a free-for-all riot broke out on stage. It went on for 15 minutes, with equipment, fists & instruments being thrown & trashed. A fully dressed NYPD riot squad marched in to stop it (as I exited.) Those were the daze!

No Jack Bruce in Blind Faith. It's one of my favorite albums. I recently got the standard issue CD with a few useless bonus tracks. I have a vinyl copy from back in the day. It's been in storage a while, I'll be picking up all my vinyl shortly. I imagine my copy isn't in great shape, it's one of the first records I ever bought and played it a lot on some pretty poor equipment.

Yep, I saw them too, but in Milwaukee at the MidWest Rock Festival. D&B, Taste w/Rory Gallagher, and John Mayall on his "The turning Point" tour were also on the bill, along with the legendary MC5...
Ah, those were the days indeed......
Mystic 12-29-2008, 08:49 PM It's the one with the naked girl on the cover right?
Perhaps she's wearing jeans, etc., below the photo frame. Maybe we should instead refer to her as the "topless girl"? :scratch2:
Anyway, it's a fine album overall and includes a Clapton tune that would be a concert mainstay of his for years to follow, i.e., Presence Of The Lord, a Winwood track that would also become closely associated future EC live outings, i.e., Can't Find My Way Home, rounded out by two more Winwood offerings that still stand among the most beautiful rock songs recorded: Had To Cry Today and the elegant, haunting Sea Of Joy.
Someone above thought he might have to give a listen to this album; he is correct.
MarkinIowa 12-29-2008, 09:17 PM I have to agree with Mystic, "Sea of Joy" is everything he said. Brilliant! Makes the album for me.
And it always gets kind of confusing with the changing labels regarding reissues of this album through the years. I think the original US release was on Atco, without the naked girl. Could be wrong.
Bassist Rick Grech was in Family, a rather odd band that I really like.
vinyldisc 12-29-2008, 09:24 PM The girl is the daughter of one of the members, fairly sure...
Really great record, imho.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUW1SGF7bR8
later version... really good too

Acoustic 12-29-2008, 09:32 PM I believe that's an urban legend... that the girl was Ginger Bakers daughter. In some 'trusted' interview I heard it was a girl someone affiliated with the project saw on a bus or subway.
Big fan of that LP... though I don't have the LP anymore but I do have the MFSL 24kt gold plated CD. And last year I got for Xmas the London Hyde Park 1969 concert on DVD.
I was somewhat close... here's the story. (http://www.angelfire.com/wi/blindfaith/vvcov69.html)
ScramMan2 12-29-2008, 10:19 PM Is that album a rarity? I picked an original one up in a record score yesterday. It's the one with the naked girl on the cover right?
Yup. Have the re-issue on CD.
ScramMan2 12-29-2008, 10:21 PM Yep, I saw them too, but in Milwaukee at the MidWest Rock Festival. D&B, Taste w/Rory Gallagher, and John Mayall on his "The turning Point" tour were also on the bill, along with the legendary MC5...
Ah, those were the days indeed......
Where was that?
resqguy 12-30-2008, 02:55 PM I always thought that Clapton and Winwood collaborated well together. I wondered why they never did anything else together for all those years since, or did they?
They did appear together in a movie. Anyone want to take a stab at the name of the movie?
meggy 12-30-2008, 03:07 PM Blues Brothers 2000.
outshined 12-30-2008, 03:11 PM Yup. Have the re-issue on CD.
I do, too. It has both covers on it, with the topless girl on the front.
"Had to Cry Today" has a very memorable hook. I would think this would be a perfect song to cover, but I'm unaware of one. But, then, why mess with success?
elcoholic 12-30-2008, 03:54 PM Great album, too bad EC just wasn't in the right emotional place at the time or it may have been more than 1 album band. I recommend reading his autobiography and working through his discography along the way. The backstories really shed new light on his progression. I have the original release which was promptly recalled because the cover was deemed offensive.
Sluggo 12-30-2008, 04:10 PM I currently dont have a copy of Anykind in my collection,How'd that happen ?
ablethevoice 12-30-2008, 04:18 PM On the subject of the controversial original album cover, Wiki has this to say:
The release of the album provoked controversy because the cover featured a topless pubescent girl, holding in her hands a silver space ship designed by Mick Milligan, a jeweller at the Royal College of Art. Some perceived the ship as phallic. The U.S. record company issued it with an alternative cover which showed a photograph of the band on the front.
The cover art was created by photographer Bob Seidemann, a personal friend and former flatmate of Clapton who is known primarily for his photos of Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. Rumours about the girl's relationship to the band fuelled the controversy; among them were that she was Baker's illegitimate daughter, and that she was a groupie kept as a slave by the band members. Actually, the young girl was a London suburbanite, who posed upon consent by her parents and for a fee, as described in Seidemann's mini essay about the origins of the Blind Faith album cover artwork. Also see "Origins of BF's Album Artwork"...
Regardless of what was or was not on the album cover, it was (and still is) a great album.
By the way, HERE'S (http://www.bobseidemann.com/blind_faith_doc.html) the story about the album cover.
Jack Lord 12-30-2008, 04:39 PM Great album- one of my favorites as a matter of fact. Flawless from start to finish.
KeninDC 12-30-2008, 04:45 PM Easy to find the OP, topless gal included.
The fun thing about EC is his constant hopping around from band to band to solo, perhaps always wishing he was a Beatle.
AlleyKat 12-30-2008, 06:56 PM I have the 2 CD edition. In addition to the original 6 songs, there are:
five jams;
an excellent electric version of "Can't Find My Way Home":thmbsp:;
2 quite different versions of "Sleeping In the Ground"; and "Time Winds".
ScramMan2 12-30-2008, 07:50 PM Yep, I saw them too, but in Milwaukee at the MidWest Rock Festival. D&B, Taste w/Rory Gallagher, and John Mayall on his "The turning Point" tour were also on the bill, along with the legendary MC5...
Ah, those were the days indeed......
When was that? I was in VietNam for a year.

This is the cover I have....a reissue from (I think) 1973, I believe. It really is a great album. "Do What You Like" was a bit of a misstep--why would you put a drum solo on a studio record?--but songs like "Can't Find My Way Home" and "Presence of the Lord" are undoubtedly classics.
meggy 12-31-2008, 12:37 PM Great album- one of my favorites as a matter of fact. Flawless from start to finish.
YUP! Perfect as is, IMO.

Why not??
Carl Palmer did a studio solo on TANK
Bonzo did one in Moby Dick
Brian "Blinky" Davidson did one on the Nice LP "Ars Longa Vita Brevis"
And what about In A Gadda Da Vida??

And all of these moments are generally pretty boring and definitely weak links on their respective records.

Not so much, that was Brian Wilson :D His low self-esteem problems really complicated his relationships with women and band mates. From my read of his autobiography he was a reluctant band member, let alone leader, that really wanted to play the blues and not deal with band and record company politics.
BTW 461 Ocean Boulevard is my hands-down favorite from EC, followed closely by Slowhand. What's yours?
beans 12-31-2008, 02:04 PM "Can't Find My Way Home".. cymbal crashes and sizzle symbols good "trackability" test for your cartridge/stylus!
I bought the MFSL 24kt gold, and was blown away by Baker hitting that splash cymbal... so hard it sounds like it's shattering. I don't get why, either, in such a soft song.
The thing about the cover is that when it was released in the US, there was controversy, not so much because of the nudity, but because the girl who modeled for the photo was about 12 years old at the time.
elcoholic 12-31-2008, 02:29 PM Too bad most missed the point. The pre-pubescence girl was intended to evoke a sense innocence facing an unknown future represented by the rocket. Hence "Blind Faith".
Vinylrockrob 12-31-2008, 02:55 PM Mine has the picture like yours on the back and the naked girl on the front. It is on the Polydor (RSO???)label.
I thought they were different albums. Well, their you go. Ya learn something every day.

It has made his career that much more interesting. Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominoes and finally solo (never made the Traveling Wilderberries though...). Another thing about him is that he is never hesitant to bring in other great guitarists to his projects including but not limited to Duane Allman, Albert Lee and Derek Trucks.
Mystic 12-31-2008, 03:43 PM The fun thing about EC is his constant hopping around from band to band to solo, perhaps always wishing he was a Beatle.
Spoken like a true Stones fan, Ken. ;)
day67 01-05-2009, 12:03 PM I loved the drum solo in "Do What You like." Odd -- kinda. Stoned? probably, he starts it out slow, might be fair to say clumsy, and then lumbers along seeming to not find the groove and then! Hell of an ending!
vinyldavid 01-05-2009, 12:21 PM Blues Brothers 2000.
I have that movie...never noticed Winwood in the final scene.
I have the Atco labeled pressing without the naked girl on the cover. It's an original that my mother bought when it was released.
classic carl 01-05-2009, 12:50 PM I only have it on CD. One of my all time favorite albums also. Clapton and Winwood played some of these songs on Clapton's Guitar Festival DVD from Chicago in 2007. Amazing set. Eric said that he'd been waiting to play with Steve for 20 years.
scubaguy10 01-12-2009, 08:33 PM I just acquired that record recently. It has the naked girl, and is a gatefold cover, with the pictures of the band inside. Perfect condition too. I think I paid about $3-4.
It's on Polydor.
