The playoffs are upon us, and I'm happy to see my Vikings are among the teams playing in the post season. We're gonna have a tough time getting past Philly this Sunday, but I think we can do it. In fact, I'm going to be so bold as to say...Superbowl. Or maybe that's just the eggnog talking.;)

I think the game will be close, with Philly winning. Westbrook is a great player. As is your superstar running back, but I think the Eagles' blitz schemes will mess up your QB.

All that and $4 gets you a cup of Starbucks...

Defense will mostly hold, Westbrook manages to break one off. Jackson throws a couple of picks but also runs well when he manages to sidestep the blitz.

But - this may be the game when the defense finally gives in, missing fat pat and now Ray Edwards will expose some weaknesses.

The only chance is to get into McNabb's grille early and often.

Eagles in a squeaker, sorry to say.

who the hell can understand anything he says? '-)

The buzz is that he'll sit another week. He has reported no pain and that he'll work out this week, but I'm hearing that he will not suit up on Sunday.

Yeah I got some sources......

I am concerned with the Philly defense confusing T-Jack. Gus may be a better QB in the playoffs. Also, Peterson has to hold onto the ball. Turnovers will be crucial in this game.

That's a pretty good take, Waboman.

I would like to see both QB's used. TJack doesn't have the composure to stick with it if the going gets tough, although he did hang in there pretty good after the INT last week. Rolling in Gus would give him a mental break and slow things down for him.

I wouldn't have a problem running with Taylor if A.D. has issues with the ball.

I'd love to see you guys knock off the iggies. The only team I dislike more than
Philly is Dallas.

jocko_nc
12-31-2008, 01:49 PM
1) At least Dallas will be watching from home.

2) Pittsburgh is unbeatable when they do not turn the ball over. That statement holds true for most good teams, but is especially true for Pittsburgh. That defense is sick good.

3) Playoff experience is hugely valuable for no explicable reason. Nobody wants to play Indianapolis and Manning. Ditto New York and the other Manning. Throw Pittsburgh in that pile. We'll see what Tennessee does.

4) Despite the fact that several Wildcards have gone all the way in recent years, the week off is big for coaching and game preparation. The exceptional Wildcard teams (Pittsburgh and New York) were literally exceptional teams and were able to pull it off. Indianapolis may do the same thing. Again, we'll see about Tennessee.

5) Roethlisberger has an unusually large load on his shoulders. More than the others, he has to carry his offense if his team is to prevail. If he can do so, his defense will win the game.

6) This is football. ANYTHING can happen.

7) Go Steelers.

Somebody planning a trip to Lambeau, because that's about as close to a Lombardi Trophy as the ViQueens will get...:D

Actually, I like all of the roadies this week, with the Ravens at Miami being the least known game. I like Indy better than the Titans, who are 3-3 since 10-0, and think a Steelers-Colts, and Giants-Panthers set of title games would prelude a dynamite SuperBowl. Please note that these games would be played outside on grass in real football stadiums, not inside on rugs....:D

But actually, I think all the games, well except maybe Atlanta-Arizona, will be good games and look forward to a great playoff season. Manning v. Manning would be quite a way to end this season though...

Yeah...I've tried to block it out.

That was the one and only kick that Gary Anderson missed all year. He was the first kicker to make 100% of FG and EPs in the regular season, but didn't quite git'er done post season. :tears:

Of course, the defense sorta choked too allowing Atlanta to score again after the FG attempt to tie it up and send it to OT. Atlanta then kicked a FG in OT to win.

I'm hoping to see the Falcon's at home for the NFC title again this year, but the odds are way against that. It would be sweet to exact revenge.

Considering that the Vikings beat three of the NFC playoff teams, and should have beaten Atlanta, that's a pretty silly comment. The Vikings can't get any respect it seems. ESPN today somehow ranked the rushing attack fifth among playoff teams. I had to laugh. And everyone continues to bash a quarterback who has thrown 8 touchdowns, 3 wins and only 1 interception in the last 4 four games, with relatively few mistakes, unlike interception happy Frerotte.

I just wish that the coaching staff and its call playing was a bit more creative.

Is the Playoff game still gonna be Blacked-out? Last I heard it was....

That won't happen and before you go off on a typical puker fan, paint thinner fueled rant, let me explain.

Until this year, when playoff tickets went out season ticket holders were forced to pay for every possible playoff game in advance. So even though they may only play a home game in the opening round, we had to buy a strip of three games and hugely jacked up prices. When the ticket packages came out this year, the Bears had the upper hand and a wildcard spot was never in the mix for the NFC North.

Also factor in that a huge majority of the owners are corporate entities in a time when money is extremely short and purchasing tickets to a sporting event that likely wouldn't happen wouldn't have been prudent.

In actuality, this year the fine print stated that your card wouldn't be charged until the game is played.

Of the 20k tickets that were announced as available, 9,000 were sold the first day and the rest will be gone before a blackout.

I cannot believe that the Broncos will be without Mike Shanahan next year! It's gonna take me some time to get my head around that one.

Wild Card Weekend Winners:

34-27 San Diego
17-14 Baltimore
28-14 Philladelphia
34-10 Atlanta

If Indy does take San Diego at home, they will go to the Superbowl. Philly and Atlanta will both lose their next games. Baltimore is very dangerous and will win their side of the bracket and end up in the AFC championship. If San Diego wins against Indy, then Tennesse will end up in the Championship.

No matter what happens in the first round of the NFC, New York and Charlotte will end up in the championship.

Mike Singletary will have good success in SF next year. His team will be a great example of discipline and leadership.

You're going to the game? Way cool. Rock on!!

My father held charter season tickets to Vikings, Twins, and Northstars from when the teams first started.

I don't have the financial ability to keep them, but my brother does. The hockey team moved on (unbelievable set of circumstances) but the football and baseball tickets are still in the family.

The football seats are low in the second deck about the 30 yd line and he's never improved them. I love the view from there. The baseball seats are stunning... 2nd row over Joe Mauer's left shoulder. Closer to him than the pitcher is.

I get to about half of the Vikings games and 10 or 12 Twins games each year. As far as a football fan experience, I actually prefer watching on TV with the local radio guys for audio over attending a game. You miss a lot of the technical aspects of the game when you are live and in person. But its good to hang out with my brother for an afternoon.

Man, that is fantastic, having seats like that! I'll bet your Pop could tell some stories about Bud, Fran, the Purple People Eaters, Chuck Foreman, etc. Your Pop must have been a hardcore fan, too, sitting outside in December!

Dad was a rabid sports fan, and that was inherited by my older brother and me. We actually lived 550 miles away from the Twin Cities when I was a kid, and he traveled to all of the home football games and many times a year to see the Twins and Northstars (he was a private pilot). I moved to Fargo in 1977 and to a suburb of Minneapolis in 1981.

I have great memories of the old Met stadium. Our football seats were front row of the second deck on the 12. The third deck hung right over our seats, and snow kicked down from the upper level landed right on our laps. I didn't see many games then, but I do have vivid memories of Bobby Allison, Harmon Killebrew, Cesar Tovar, Mudcat Grant, and even remember Carl Yastrzemski at bat for the Red Sox.

Chuck Foreman is still in town and is good friends with my brother so I see him from time to time. Actually, I attended a Twins game with him and my brother a couple years ago.

I remember the day that the "Rifle from Rice" took over from an injured Fran Tarkenton in 1977 and threw three TDs to beat SF. I was also there the day he threw for SIX against the hated packers. Too bad he was plagued by injury for most of his career.

It be pretty embarrassing to have the playoffs blacked out. I really can't believe that it has come to this. Arizona maybe because they've sucked forever and have no history, but I expected more form the fans in MN.

Are they sticking it to the fans with obscene prices? Or is the economy got folks thinking of better ways to spend a couple hundred bucks? Sports fans always seemed to be oblivious to that, but maybe not so much these days???

Damn, you guys going to get your act together up there and get this blackout lifted?

NFL extends Blackout Time (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-vikings-tickets&prov=ap&type=lgns)

Traditionally teams required season ticket holders to buy play off tickets, the Vikings don't. Hence, one week to sell 60,000 tickets, rather than having most of them accounted for right away. Had we beaten Atlanta, it would have been two weeks to sell the tickets.

Not surprising it took so long, Minnesota fans are so luke warm after so much mediocrity and heartbreak.

Lets hope this home underdog trend continues!

Dew, you explained it very well. Around Thanksgiving, season ticket holders got notice to pay as much as $900 per seat for the three playoff games that could be played. Most season ticket holders have 4 seats, and (this is important) most season ticket holders are companies, not individuals.

Wow. Another Charger/Colt heart-stopper last night. As a life long Chargers fan, I was cussing Norv Turner earlier in the season, but he has managed to go 3-1 in the playoffs the last 2 seasons. Wish me the best, back to work tomorrow with alot of unhappy Colts fans. I do like the Colts, the way their organization is run, great coaching and of course Peyton. On the other hand, I really despise the Broncos and wish the bolts would have laid 60 points on them last week (just a rant).

I'm one of those unhappy Colts fans, since Peyton came from Tennessee.

Both my teams lost yesterday. I was pulling for Atlanta too. The Falcons showing there's plenty of life after Michael Vick and doing well with a quarterback that sets an example of how you're supposed to act off the field was what got me to watching them again.

Oh well, here's a toast to the Carolina Panthers kicking butt against whoever they're playing next week.

You guys really need an upgrade at QB; Jackson is average at best. Are you going to fuel the fires and go after Favre if/when the Jets cut him loose and he decides (again!!) in June/July that he can still play.... I loved the guy, but it certainly looks like he needs to hang them up now.

Couple of nice, cringe inducing, vicious hits during the games too on wildcard weekend. Vikings' running back taking a helmet to his facemask the most visible. I was surprised to see him not suffer back spasms the rest of the game. Saw several nice helmet-to-helmet incidents that fortunately the refs didn't call. Excellent, just as I like it!

Looking again for more downright brutal hits, either shoulder-to-helmet or even better, shoulder-to-facemask, or helmet-to-helmet, this next weekend, again hits that leave players on the ground for a few moments wondering where they even are and with double vision and ringing ears.

The Steelers looked awful sharp. We assume they are tough, but they looked sharp as well. They need to peak now with a solid running attack that has been lacking for most of the season. One game down, they seem to be doing just that.

Baltimore and Pittsburgh will be an epic game. Both teams are similar, designed to win in the same conference in the same venues: Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Cincinnati in the month of December. Pittsburgh, however, is slightly superior in all categories. They should win "easily", though it will not be easy and it will not be pretty.

Big Ben needs to come through for the offense. If he has a particularly bad game, the race is over. Having a successful running game almost guarantees Ben will play well.

Philadelphia is a real dangerous team, depending upon which team shows up to play.

I don't see how Arizona is able to play with the big boys all the way to the end.

The Ravens have got to be tired with the run of games they have played. Anything left in the tank? Emotional let down? Flacco is a rookie, rookies always suffer a let down in the Playoffs.

Go Steelers

You are correct, it is a joke. The only thing that saves the NFL from total embarrassment is that they aren't playing the raiders.

Cardinals in the Superbowl! I've picked them to do something for the last 5 years and now they go to the big game the year I ignore them. Well, it should be a fun matchup, Cards have some pretty good offense to put against the Steel Curtain. And Warner needs to win 3 more SBs, he said he was going to win 5 after the 99 Rams did it.

I was watching the first part of the Cardinals /Eagles game and had never seen such poor tackling by the Eagles. Cardinals in the SB? Geez there is something wrong with this system.
