I have a Dynaco FM-3... Im curious as to why there are tube covers? why is it needed?

I think it is to prevent Radio Frequency radiation that may cause interference.

Shielding mostly, some circuits were prone to oscillation without the shield, in other cases its to keep signals that happen to be on the IF frequency out of the amplifier chain.
