View Full Version : Friends, Countrymen, Send My Your Cassettes

Yeah, strange request I know. But I recently acquired this new/old Buick that only has a cassette player. I'll be adding an FM-modulated trunk mounted cd changer at some point in the future. But with the birth of my daughter only weeks away now, who knows when I'll find time to install a changer.

So, I'm begging, pleading with you. I know you guys probably have a bunch of good cassettes just going to waste in a drawer somewhere. I'll take good care of them - I promise. (I unfortunately gave my collection away a few years ago. I'm considering calling my buddy back to see if he still has them.) Send me some good music. Please. FM radio is killing my brain faster than the abuses of my youth. If it wasn't for the local college jazz station, I'd already be guilty of road rage. But that station only has about a 5 mile range on it's signal. I mean, honestly, how many times can one listen to "Freebird" or "Jumpin Jack Flash" before going nuts?

So please, can you come to the aid of a fellow aker?????

They can be copies, compilations, anything. I'm not choosy. I post enough that you guys have an idea of what I like.

Thanks.

JD

You know I would send them your way if I had any left. Sorry dude. :sigh:

Today's FM does suck big time. Have you thought about satellite radio?

JD, surely you have a Walkman in yr house somewhere? If not, go get one at a flea market or something. Then get one of those FM-based cassette adapters and a power plug into yr cigarette lighter and voila, you have the ability to listen to any ceedee you want. Now, the car audio purists will probably HOWL with derision at this suggestion, but that's what I use, and it sounds perfectly fine to me. My $.02 says that the automobile is not a suitable environment to go on the audiophool's quest for sonic nirvana.

Dave - Satellite doesn't really interest me, and it's the same issue - no time in the forseeable future to purchase and install one. All I really want back is the ability to play a cd. I'm missing out on an hour/day of good listening time (critical given all the new music that shows up at my door).

Besides - there's the issue of the montly fee for satellite. Besides the normal "bills" (water, elec. etc.), I have the security system monitoring, Chem-Lawn treatments, 3 cell phones, digital cable, internet, home-warranty, insect/termite treatments, CC membership etc. Makes me long for the good ole days sometimes - when I was a little less "connected". I'm ambushed by $20 & $50 monthly bills. Never mind groceries for 6, dinner/movies for 6 etc. Adds up fast dude.

Thanks for thinking of me though.

Eric - I already checked into that, first thing. But two problems. 1st, my car player fully inserts the cassette inside & down into the player, so I don't think the connection would work. 2nd, it is illegal in this state to drive with headphones on, or I'd just use my walkman. You can ride a motorcycle with no helmet, or talk on a cell phone while driving, but "thou shalt not drive with headphones on." :dunno:

My company car is a Lemona, errrr, Lumina, and the cassette player does the same thing- unless yrs shoves the thing down a black hole 2 feet deep, it works, trust me.

Time to hit the garage sales buddy. Lots of cassettes out there, especially Maxells and TDKs that you can record over. Plus you'll luck into some nice titles too. You prolly could score a cassette deck for $5-10 too. I have a few around here that need a hand, but shipping one to you would be more than you could find one for locally.

Or you can pickup a Discman CD type player with the car kit and play your CDs through the radio (no headset). We use an old Sony so the kids can play the CDs in my wifes car and it works fine. Just get one with at least 10 seconds of buffering, 20 would be better. Probably get one for $20.

See, it ain't so bad :D

Thanks Andyman, toze, OMI(godthatsanuglyavatar).

I'll go the discman/car adapter route. I just checked and BestBuy has the adapter for $15, or a cd player with adapter for $30.

And andyman, I have couple of Marantz tape decks at home in perfect condition collecting dust (one gold, one black). Maybe I'll have to buy some blanks and cook up a tape or two. It's been a while since I adjusted the level, selected metal or bias, Dolby B or C etc.

JD, I'd give ya my left nut if I could spare it. Did a mad scramble thru the hacienda and came up empty handed. Gave the deck and all tapes away back in the early 90's. All my rare stuff was on R2R and I converted all of that to CD several years ago too. :(

I would hope that THAT couldn't be within the realm of possibility.

You can find cheap cassettes at thriftstores like VH suggested or hit some yard-sales.
I check my local stores once a week here and pick out some good tunes. 25 cents each;)

JDaniel - Let us not forget that the cassettes that will be sent to you ALSO have to match the new/old Buick. What is the Buick? Music that is appropriate for an Electra is not appropriate for a Skylark. Or am I going too far back?

Ouch - I've officially entered "oldfartdom" with the recent acquisition of a 1998 Buick Century. I now have whitewalls, power windows/locks, Dynaride suspension, a trunk big enough for the Sopranos.

My musical tastes are more hip than my car though - blues, jazz, roots/americana, alt-country. Just no hip hop or funeral dirges.

OMI - you are one kind Mimi look-alike crossdresser clown from hell.

All this new music could be fun. Kind of like receiving the AK "Music Box".

Thanks amigo. Let me know how I can return the musical favor.
