View Full Version : The Jam
sqdlvr 01-03-2009, 10:55 PM Hey all, I just recently discovered the group called "The Jam" as I was watching a movie called "Billy Elliot". I picked up a cd called "The Sound of The Jam" which is like a best of. Does anyone here know if they had any U.S. albums and if they are any good? I really liked the song "Town Called Mallice". Also I liked the Billy Elliot soundtrack cuz it had one of my childhood faves T-Rex!!! Appreciate any of your inputs or reviews on which Jam albums I should try and find!

Great thanks for the info. I'm gonna shop around for their albums preferably in the used bins...before I think of shelling out for the reissues. Which album has Town Called Mallice though? I love their motown bass lines and influences...
botrytis 01-03-2009, 11:26 PM Well, Paul Weller (guitar player) for the Jam still is still putting out albums and touring. I saw him in October is it was amazing to say the least.
ruffian 01-04-2009, 12:31 AM Picked a bunch up a year or so ago when I bought a 200 record collection on CL. hehe Modern World and The Jam of them are UK imports. Didn't realize it till now. Gonna play Modern World now.

P. Shivers 01-04-2009, 12:45 PM Another long time fan here. Check out "All Mod Cons." That's the one I play most often.
jazzwolf 01-04-2009, 01:01 PM I'm a very big fan. I was lucky to see them in NY on their first U.S. tour, they played at a theatre that C.B.G.B. tried to get started (I believe it was called the Entermedia but closed shortly after) and they were very good. They only had 2 albums out at the time and not many songs in their repertoire and the encore consisted of songs they had already performed earlier in the set.
Urchinn 01-04-2009, 01:02 PM Oh man, one of the very best UK bands EVER. Saw 'em play in Hartford in '79 (I think it was '79)! Just about everything they recorded was worthwhile. There is a great cd box set, there are excellent bootlegs, and TONS of great live tapes floating around. Don't miss the 12" vinyl ep with Pity Poor Alfie/Fever. Main man, Paul Weller, is still recording non-stop.
sqdlvr 01-04-2009, 01:40 PM Cool...so what are the U.S. albums I should get. I really want Town Called Malice on record so I can compare how it sounds to the cd...bet it's better!!! I saw on SoundStage direct there's a couple of reissues, but I want to see if I can track down some good used copies before plunking down that hard earned $$$$...Thanks for all the help.
jazzwolf 01-04-2009, 02:29 PM I personally don't think The Jam made any bad albums so anyone you decide to get will be a treat but if you want to hear "Town Called Malice" on LP then you want to get "The Gift". That is the LP that it appeared on.:music:

Ditto that as the Jam were one of the greatest groups ever. Keep in mind that, as was stated, there is a stark difference between their early stuff and their later stuff. Indeed most of their albums sound different although you could pair them- In The City/Modern World, Setting Sons/Sound Affects, etc.
Its all good although I prefer their early and middle periods more than their later stuff, not that any of is bad. So get it all. Don't overlook The Jam EP which had a bunch of singles not on albums and the Jam at the BBC. There are also some other B sides that did not make it to albums- Carnaby Street is a gem. My first time in England in 1986, I made sure to track them down. Still have them.

That 5-0 dude from the previous post really knows his sh**.
I like The Jam a lot. Their early stuff is raw and full of energy. As Weller got older his music became much "prettier" which disappointed some people but it was still good. "In The City" is a favorite of mine.
