View Full Version : I know you got 'em, K-Tel favorites.
VinylHanger 01-04-2009, 12:56 AM I'm listening to my favorite K-tel album tonihgt at very loud volumes. Neon Nights-Rock's Danceable Side.
Great hits like-Super Freak, Let it whip by the Dazz band, You Got the Power by War, Get down on It by Cool and the Gang, A Night to Remember by Shalamar among others. Just fun songs. And honestly, it sounds incredible.
My other favorite K-Tel mixes are Full tilt and Dimensions. Full Tilt was the very first album I bought when I was a kid. I then went out and bought Queen the Game, so I really do have some taste. :D Of course, years later I did run to the store and buy the soundtrack to Breakin'. :scratch2:
Some of these albums are so much fun, my 10 year old daughter has to tell me to turn it down. I just tell her she's too old for Rock and Roll. :D She's not amused.
vtomike 01-04-2009, 01:41 AM Mind Bender was my favorite! It was one of the 1st albums i owned.
Tubejunke 01-04-2009, 02:21 AM Did K-tel do "Southern Fried Rock?" I remember seeing the comercials in the late 70's and WISHING that I had it? Seems like the commercial had an egg frying in a pan. Perhaps I'm getting confused with the "This is your brain on drugs" bit in the 80's. Either way I remember a lot of good sounds on the commercial.
tasha 01-04-2009, 12:05 PM Any or all K-Tels will do, the more the better. They are a nice supplement to single artist albums or doing you're own vintage mix.
Sandy G 01-04-2009, 12:26 PM The K-tel albums are the only place I've ever been able to find that beautiful early '70s song, "Pretty Lady" by that Canadian group, Lighthouse. I don't think Lighthouse's album(s) were ever sold this far south..At least, I've never run acrost one...
anytune 01-04-2009, 01:00 PM Southern Fried Rock (upper left) is an old fave. Here's a sampling of my K-Tel collection, currently about 60.
SpeakerLabFan 01-04-2009, 01:41 PM I have a bunch of these along with alot of other 70's exploit-o compilations. I'll have to take a look at them. :music:

FYI, that one was on their 1973 LP Can You Feel It? I think I have at least 6 or 7 LH lps, picked up in a collection, so they're out there.
Hifirob2 01-04-2009, 01:43 PM Wow - I wish I had 60 K-Tel records. Here's mine - plus a Ronco thrown in for good measure. :thmbsp:

sqdlvr 01-04-2009, 01:44 PM Boy oh boy do you all bring back memories...My first K-Tel album was Dynamic Sound from 1974. I remember thinking why are some of the songs cut and the volume was so low you had to turn up the amp...my dad didn't appreciate that part...but oh well for a 10 year old it was a way to save on buying singles...plus it was the only way to get The Five Man Electrical Band's "Werewolf"...still trying to find that single though...or album...oh well...
similost 01-04-2009, 01:52 PM I've got a couple K-Tel and a couple Ronco LPs myself.. Not sure of all the names. I do know I've got the Hit Explosions.. I'd like to find some more. They really are a blast to play on some of those great drinking evenings and reliving the youth..
MJSNet 01-04-2009, 01:58 PM Great Question!
Hustle '76 ~ (incidentally, all songs were NOT sung by the original artists! Boy was I ticked!)
Stars (1977)
and a Ronco titled Super Sonic (1979)
Hifirob2 01-04-2009, 02:12 PM When I found an old ADC Accutrac 4000 programmable TT, K-Tel records are the first thing to pop into my head. How cool to program it to play every 'even' numbered song, then every 'odd' numbered song on a side - then sit back and watch it blow a fuse trying to keep up.....
That is - if my accutrac actually WORKED! Stupid piece of crap....as if Ron Popiel invented it himself.........but WAIT - there's more!!! Sadly, there isn't. Not even a Pocket Fisherman.

vincei 01-04-2009, 02:24 PM Sound quality was horrid and songs cut, but there was something about them! A few years ago I bought a bunch of NOS from a local fleamarket. Some songs are very hard to find anywhere else! Here are a few covers for your viewing pleasure!
PS I also enjoyed the Tee Vee records and Ronco ones too.
vincei 01-04-2009, 02:29 PM a few more. I loved those covers!
sqdlvr 01-04-2009, 03:04 PM I have a few K-Tel's from Canada. I think their pressings are better than their U.S. counterparts any one agree or observe the same thing.

Breakfast with the Beatles just ended, so I am playing my copy of "Music Power" from 1974. A very clean recording, but still horrid sounding. This one sounded good when new on my POS BSR - but what did I know back then?
To eek out some fidelity, I've turned up the bass & treble knobs, kicked in the Super Bass, threw a pretty severe smile onto the 10 band EQ, plus added +12db at 40hz on my Realistic Bass Enhancer. With all that, this records ROCKS!! No other vinyl I own has needed such drastic help to sound good.

ducati_EL34 01-04-2009, 03:34 PM a few more. I loved those covers!
That was probably the best part about them... :sigh:
I had one as a kid. I do not miss it or the music on it. :D
spiderhead69 01-04-2009, 09:41 PM I have a few of the K-tel / Ronco collections too. Specifically from the late 60's and early 70's. Sorry, don't have time to haul them out and take pictures.
Jack Lord 01-05-2009, 10:34 AM K-Tel is an icon of my childhood. I still have a Hit Machine cassette that a friend made for me by holding the mike up to one speaker. I also have the LP and several others plus some Roncos.
I gave all of mine away except a four record set, "Super Hits of The Sixties" that came out in the early 70's. Only five to six songs per side, they were pressed on thick, clean vinyl and sounded far superior to the original 45's.
tasha 01-09-2009, 10:34 AM Geez, I managed to pick up three at one of the thrift stores this week. Rainbow, Sound Waves, and High Energy all have original music from the artist. They were in pretty good shape too.
