View Full Version : Prophetic Songs?
Mark B 01-09-2009, 04:56 AM Have you ever heard a song that seemed prophetic?
There's a song that always gives me a chill when I hear it - A Gordon Lightfoot song titled "To Many Clues In This Room" on his 1976 album "Summertime Dream". The song describes what sounds like a space shuttle crash into the ocean, but 5 years before the first launch of the Space Shuttle, and 10 years before the crash of the Space Shuttle Challenger.
First Verse:
The space shuttle ends where the subway begins
there's a tear on the face of the moon
from dusk until dawn they have searched all day long
but there's too many clues in this room
At best it is said we've been locked deep inside
of an old seaman's chest full of charts
where maps are contained and what's left of his brains
when his crew threw his ball to the sharks

Well they divided up all the land
And we've got states and cities
Cities have their neighborhoods
And more subdivisions
There's countries divided by walls
Oceans and latitudes
And longitude, longing to find out
Just what they're missing
They're lots of area codes
And nine digit zip codes
Secret decoder ring codes
Arteries, shopping nodes
We'll invent some new computers
Link up the global village
And get AP, UPI, and Reuters
To tell everybody the news
We'll be one happy neighborhood
Spread out across the world
But who's going to stop that burglar
From breaking in my house
If he lives that far away
We'll be just like old friends
No means to your ends
The police state is to busy
And the neighborhood's getting out of hand
It's not about my politics
Something happened way too quick
A bunch of men who played it sick
They divide, conquer
It's all here before your eyes
Safety is a big disguise
That hides among the other lies
They divide, conquer
Well I expect I won't be heard
Because my silence is assured
Never a discouraging word
They divide and conquer
They divide and conqu

seems she went aground on manuevers
the winter boys

bye bye empire, empire bye bye
shallow water channel and tide...'
ablethevoice 01-10-2009, 12:40 PM ELP's Karn Evil 9 Third Impression:
Man alone; born of stone;
Will stamp the dust of time
His hands strike the flame of his soul;
Ties a rope to a tree and hangs the universe
Until the winds of laughter blows cold.
Fear that rattles in mens ears
And rears its hideous head
Dread .... death .... in the wind ....
Man of steel pray and kneel
With fevers blazing torch
Thrust in the face of the night;
Draws a blade if compassion
Kissed by countless kings
Whose jewelled trumpet words blind his sight.
Walls that no man thought would fall
The altars of the just
Crushed .... dust .... in the wind ....
No man yields who flies in my ship
Danger!
Let the bridge computer speak
Stranger!
Load your program. I am yourself.
No computer stands in my way
Only blood can cancel my pain
Guardians of a new clear dawn
Let the maps of war be drawn.
Rejoice! glory is ours!
Our young men have not died in vain,
Their graves need no flowers
The tapes have recorded their names.
I am all there is
Negative! primitive! limited! I let you live!
But I gave you life
What else could you do?
To do what was right
I'm perfect! are you?

I seen the lights go down on Broadway
Saw the Empire State laid low
(OK, so he picked the wrong skyscraper...)

Well... the Thresher went down in 1961.

(Did Jan Berry portent his own near demise?)
"Well, the last thing I remember, Doc, I started to swerve,
And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve.
I know I'll never forget that horrible sight.
I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right.
You won't come back from Dead Man's Curve..."

"The Eastern world, it is exploding..."
Darn, the FIRST prophetic song that comes to mind. Seems to be on a few minds these days. Perhaps MORE relevant today then back in the 60's.
For my second choice I would go with Joe South's " The Games People Play"
jimfet 01-11-2009, 07:48 AM 1983. Hendrix. In the 70's I thought that was the day.
