View Full Version : Songs associated with movies
jlc76 01-09-2009, 02:56 PM Not sure if this has been posted before, I did a quick search and didn't find anything. Anyway, we were having a discussion at work about certain songs that when you hear them you always associate a movie they were used for. I am not talking about soundtracks but just regular songs that may or may not have been made specifically for the movie. Examples:
Pixies "Where Is My Mind" in Fight Club
Simon & Garfunkel "Mrs. Robinson" in The Graduate
Anyway, lets see if we can think of some more.
similost 01-09-2009, 03:00 PM Funny you ask this... because I was just listening to a song because of another thread talking about one of my favorite bands..... Well known for the movie it's song was in .. Shallow Hal... see if you can guess the song...
Comfort Eagle - Cake
Brett a 01-09-2009, 03:04 PM Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta - Jordan, B.

theWB 01-09-2009, 06:11 PM Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings
Always reminds me of the scene in Platoon when they are leaving the village after they torch it.
Was also in Elephant Man, but each time I hear it I see the scene from Platoon in my mind

genojayhawk 01-10-2009, 03:11 AM whenever I hear a song from either Boogie Nights or Dazed and Confused, I instantly start quoting lines in the movie.
My favorites:
'Jessie's Girl' - Boogie Nights - Dope deal scene where the chinese kid is setting off fireworks
'Why Can't We be Friends' - D&C - Parker Posey screaming "Air raid!"

Apocalypse Now
absolutely.
similost 01-10-2009, 12:28 PM OK.. I can't believe everyone has missed these... These are just "given" songs because they are so easy to remember and pick out..
Ballrom Blitz from Wayne's World
Moving in Stereo from Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Rawhide from Blues Brothers
Tubular Bells from Weird Science
Old Time Rock and Roll from Risky Business...
It's a LONG list I could write...

'Tubular Bells' in The Exorcist?
'Chariots of Fire' theme (Vangelis)
spiderhead69 01-10-2009, 12:38 PM "Where do the Children Play" and "Trouble" - Cat Stevens, as heard in 'Harold and Maude'.
"Stuck In The Middle With You" - Steelers Wheel, as heard in 'Reservoir Dogs'.
similost 01-10-2009, 12:55 PM 'Tubular Bells' in The Exorcist?
'Chariots of Fire' theme (Vangelis)
No.. Tubular Bells are playing in a scene when Wyatt and gary are waking up... In Weird Science..
starcycle 01-10-2009, 01:06 PM "Stuck In The Middle With You" - Steelers Wheel, as heard in 'Reservoir Dogs'.
That one is pretty hard to forget.
A few off the top of my head -
Lust for Life and Dark and Long Train in Trainspotting
Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in Manhattan
Ruby Tuesday in Royal Tenenbaums
In Your Eyes in Say Anything
Sweet Emotion and School's Out in "Dazed and Confused" (most of that soundtrack, in fact -- Low Rider, etc.)
Time Warp and Sweet Transvestite in Rocky Horror :thmbsp: f-cking Time Warp, that song rocks. :D
Also whenever I think of American Splendor I think of that jazz song in the intro, Paniots Nine it's called. Cool song.
vinyldavid 01-10-2009, 01:13 PM No.. Tubular Bells are playing in a scene when Wyatt and gary are waking up... In Weird Science..
I've only heard Tubular Bells in a radio and now home setting, but have always heard it associated with The Exorcist...
And Tubular Bells as breakup music?! Little odd....

Unless maybe you're possessed by the devil and the "breakup" is you getting exorcised. :lmao:
similost 01-10-2009, 01:19 PM Yeah.. it's in the Exorcist.. but I was trying to associate it with something others may not have noticed, but I remember when I heard it and was kind of surprised..
BK201 01-10-2009, 01:53 PM No ones mentioned Lux Aeterna (Requiem for a Dream) yet? Must be the most movie associated score ever.
Hifirob2 01-10-2009, 01:59 PM So many serious movies listed here....I'll say the opening song from the first Austin Powers movie. I had really liked that song from listening to it on the radio - had even taped it to cassette. What was the name of it?
"My Definition" by some "Bombastic" band??
Now I'll have to hunt down that tape to find out.
Rob
2DualsNotEnough 01-10-2009, 10:13 PM Lust For Life by Iggy Pop from the movie Trainspotting.
Jimmy
pmsummer 01-10-2009, 10:19 PM CIA Man - The Fugs
Burn After Reading
JimJ[VT] 01-10-2009, 10:22 PM Yeah, it's disco, but the opening to Saturday Night Fever is forever tied to the Bee Gees...
Booker T and the MGs, Green Onions, drag racing in American Graffiti...
The Trashmen - Surfin' Bird...Full Metal Jacket. I also think of Paint it Black and the Mickey Mouse theme because of that movie :D
Tubejunke 01-11-2009, 02:58 AM Workin' at the Car Wash........
Tubejunke 01-11-2009, 03:09 AM Dueling Banjos from DELIVERANCE. Darn good Bluegrass in this flick by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell, but unfortunatly it seems like most folks only want to talk about the Ned Beatty "squeal like a pig" hillbilly rape scene....Pretty intense I guess but I'll stick with the Bluegrass.....
genojayhawk 01-11-2009, 03:11 AM I figured 'Foxy Lady' was tied to Garth on Waynes World.
'Death March' - Empire Strike Back, I know its the score but cmon, its soooooo cool

Breakfast Club? when they all get baked and run around?
SUPERFLY!!!!!
'Stayin' Alive' in Virtuosity when Crowe is wearing that purple suit
Quint 01-11-2009, 05:22 AM Scorcese is always good for magical musical moments in his films. I loved the use of Donovan’s “Atlantis” when Deniro, Pesci, and Liotta are kickin’ the crap out of the Billy Bats character in Goodfellas. I can’t listen to that song without thinking of that scene.
genojayhawk 01-11-2009, 05:41 AM Quint, dude, I just saw Jaws the other day. One of my new best all time movies ever.
that score is about the most recocnizable 2 note scores ever.

I’m feelin’ ya on that one, Geno! :thmbsp: Jaws is my favorite movie of all time. I’ve now watched it over 200 times, and pretty much have every bit of dialogue committed to memory. Hell, I even have a framed original poster from 1975 signed by Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss hanging in my living room! And that score . . . every time water touches my skin, I can hear it, LOL. :D

Fred Neil, Everybodys Talkin' --- Midnight Cowboy.
That whole coked up scene in Goodfellas with Monkey Man and Magic Bus ... thats great stuff.
Somebody mentioned blues brothers above ... rawhide, thats ok, but what I remember from that movie is John Lee Hooker singing Boom Boom with Willie Big Eyes Smith and Shakey Horton out on the street...
And I know it isnt the movies, but David Chase creator of the sopranos or whomever was involved in putting the music together in that series.... wow! That was brilliant stuff!
--------------
postscript, while I was typing so was the above poster... seems we have similar tastes jgmacv

Warren or Warne or what?
Saint Johnny 01-13-2009, 02:22 AM Scorcese is always good for magical musical moments in his films. I loved the use of Donovan’s “Atlantis” when Deniro, Pesci, and Liotta are kickin’ the crap out of the Billy Bats character in Goodfellas. I can’t listen to that song without thinking of that scene.
