View Full Version : computer speakers
dreadful425 01-10-2009, 05:02 PM I am interested in upgrading my pc speakers,....my computer is nothing fancy, an ibm with two jacks for speakers....and I listen to internet radio....so would like to improve the sound quality with a better pair of powered speakers....anybody have any opinions on what is a good deal for the money....or opinions on whether a set with a sub is better than just two?I would like to just use two if I can. I know I can count on all you guys to help me out here I am not a geek.:music:
MarkAnderson 01-10-2009, 05:51 PM You can always hitch yr PC to a reciever (or such) and power whatever you like.
As I type, I'm listening to some Derek Trucks thru a CR-620 and a pair of Minimus 7's. I did bring my PSB Alphas home from storage today to replace the 7's though...
vegabass25 01-10-2009, 06:41 PM Logitech (get pair with a separate sub) Most of logitecks stuff is pretty good just pick a good size set for your needs.
Alex6969 01-10-2009, 08:21 PM Logitech Z-5500's. I highly recommend them.
dj_AmTraX 01-10-2009, 08:52 PM How much do you want to spend? I like Pro Audio speakers because you get more for the money.
Jailtime 01-10-2009, 08:57 PM Logitech Z-2300. 2.1 with an 8" sub. 200 watts RMS by today's standards. I used them until I upgraded to a Marantz 2235B. You can grab them for under 100 bucks, and you won't be disappointed. The Creative I-Trigue 3300 was also pretty good, and cheaper, but I don't know if they're made anymore.
dj_AmTraX 01-10-2009, 09:22 PM Heard these at MacWorld this week. They sound awesome!

Focal's XS 2.1 system is designed to match the look of the latest iMac computer, right down to the metal trim. There is an iPOD dock on one of the satellite bases and a small, separate sub. $749 for the package shown, including the sub (not visible) but excluding the iMac!
Jailtime 01-10-2009, 09:31 PM Those better sound DAMN good for $750. You can get some very nice vintage gear for that price. But they do look cool. :thmbsp:
Sovereign 01-10-2009, 09:36 PM Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 (http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/promedia-2-1.aspx)
200 Watts of thumpin thunder. I've had mine for over three years and they rock as hard as when they were new.
Captain Scary 01-10-2009, 09:55 PM What MarkAnderson said!
While there are some cool
PC speakers out there ,why not
take this opportunity to
set up a nice vintage system to
enjoy your internet radio?
I currently have my PC running through a
Sansui 8080 to some Aristocrats in the corners
of my den.
Does the trick way better than
my Altec PC speakers n sub.
A pair of Minimus 77 speakers with an upgraded crossover and a Sonic T amp. Good stuff!!

Yep, just picked up my second set of these at a thrift yesterday ($25), this one in mint condition. First set is on my kid's XBox 360, he and his buddies are thrilled by the bass.
pmsummer 01-10-2009, 10:07 PM At the office, I've got some Klipsch Promedia 2.0 speakers that are great for the cubicle environment. The factory refurbs cost $50.
In the home office, it's Cambridge Audio Newton M-50s, and/or Mission 700s, driven by a Yamaha CR-1020.
WM826 01-10-2009, 10:12 PM Use a receiver like I did. Just connect a cable with one side having an 1/8" mini plug, the other end two rca plugs (left/right) and your good to go. Sounded fantastic during the time it was used. Brother started placing drinks atop and so it's back to a safe place (my bedroom). We have an inexpensive 2.1 Lansing system in there now, as before. Sound is weak as you'd expect. But my quality components aren't at risk of water rings and other damage now, so I'm okay with it.

mmmmn....I have that iMac, and a silver iPod....silver speakers would be just the ticket.....if I had $750.
Sam Cogley 01-10-2009, 10:29 PM I have a Creative Labs 5.1 surround set with only the front three speakers and the sub hooked up. They sound pretty good for computer speakers, and they'll put out some serious volume before they start distorting.
mdewberry 01-11-2009, 08:29 PM I currently have a set of M-Audio monitors, model Studiophile AV40. Nice and Clear, I previously went with the Klipsch speakers as previously stated. I sent one set back for a bad power supply and the second set lost one of the tweeters. I decided something entry level pro and love the M-Audios, great for pc sound, they have front aux inputs and headphone inputs and a power /volume switch and on the rear Dual RCA inputs and dual TRS inputs(1/4" jacks) with an adjustable bass boost. They even sound great when hooked up to a Marantz 2270...I believe I paid like $125-$150 for these at Guitar Center!! Here is a link to them... They list MSRP at $199 but haven't seen any at this price..

musichal 01-12-2009, 12:22 AM My rusty ole desktop pc connected to an NAD receiver I bought used driving a pair of Klipsch KG2's from the same guy as the NAD. A tad biggish for desktop speakers but sounds good; I just never heard any of the really tiny speakers I really liked, but quickly add that, of course, I haven't heard them all.
