View Full Version : OK... who plays the Triangles? ckelly 06-21-2004, 09:01 AM OK all you musicians... here's a forum for all you guys that play an instrument and want to discuss them Chris :) Dave918 06-21-2004, 09:49 AM No Triangles, but I love my guitars :D Standard Fender Stratocaster Standard Fender Telecaster Fender DG-7 acoustic Washburn D12S acoustic Washburn HB-30 -Dave Celt 06-21-2004, 03:10 PM I've owned several different basses over the years. Some crap, some not. Here are a few. '60s Kent violin bass and my old Fender Bassman amp with a 15" folded horn bass cabinet tuned to 40Hz. Fender P-Bass, early 80's Jap reissue thats very nice. A second hand, neck-thru body S. D. Curlee that was abused by it's former owner has a Model 1 DiMarzio pickup and a devastating bottom end. Am currently building my own bass. Pics will follow soon. jguzman21 06-23-2004, 11:38 AM What a Fathers Day!! My two daughters along with their Mom got me a standard Fender Stratocaster and a simple Crate practice amp. Pretty cool for starters :D . Now I need to learn to play this damn thing :dunno: . How many years has everyone been playing and were you self-taught? I think I'm gonna like this... john Dave918 06-23-2004, 11:41 AM 20 something years of trying to teach myself, still can't play worth a damn  But I do have fun trying! :D -Dave jguzman21 06-23-2004, 11:49 AM Just in the few days that I have had it, it is sure a kick in the ass to mess around with. One of the cool things about it is my 11 year old daughter has really taken a liking to it. She will soon be hammerin' out the tunes on it, but I'm sure it helps that she has been playing the since she was 6. john Celt 06-23-2004, 12:34 PM Very cool... It's never to late to learn! Vintage TX 06-23-2004, 12:46 PM I play guitar and make noise mostly by myself, don't understand why:confused: Still struggling with that F.:p: Reel 2 Reel 06-23-2004, 08:32 PM I started very young... When I was about 6 or 7...Mom and Dad got me this little plastic guitar...this was back in the 60s when plastic was still a new technology!!!..anyway..it was shaped like a regular guitar..and had 60s style flowers on it...well I chunked around it for a while ...but still didnt make any music with it...but ..one day my Brother was harassing me to no end.....so I learned a new tune...!!!!!!.."KA-bong" About two year or two later,My parents, not knowing what actually what happened to the first one,... bought me another plastic guitar..this time in the shape of an Electric..... it was black and white............well to make this story just a little shorter...it was used as a device of defense also!!!!! "KA-bong" "Jump a few years forwards..to my early teens...and yes it was AFTER the dark ages!!....My uncle had a REAL acoustic guitar ...with real strings and everything....dreadnaught style...just a big ole monster!!.... He was leaving state ..and he wasn't taking it with him ...so he gave it to me.......again ..I still had no idea how to work this thing ...other than to drive my Mom and Dad nuts with it.... Being in our TEENS ..my brother and I were expectedly at each others throats...but he was a lot bigger than me..so he had the advantage....and the great equilizer was put into service once again!!!!"KA-bong"... but this time it didnt break into 500 peices!!!just a crack in the back..... Leap forward to 1977...a friend from high schools Mother and Stepdad played in a little country JAM band...and had their guitars sittin out one day while I was visiting....well... the fact that I was always interested in this gadget..his Mom showed me three chords.....'G'..'C'...and a 'D7'....and said I could play with her guitar while I was over there...just practice those three chords....till I could play them smoothly...everything just took off from there!! So I guess ..I've been playin almost all my life...if you take into account all the uses for the guitar!!!!!LOL...... ckelly 06-24-2004, 06:21 AM hehehe your story reminds me of this guy: Reel 2 Reel 06-24-2004, 06:45 AM Yup!!! good ole .."El-Kabong"!!!!! When he pisses me off at work...I tell him that I'm gonna 'El-Kabong' him.....and this time I'm gonna use my solid walnut 'Gibson Les Paul'!!!!! I (laughably at best) Hammond organ and piano. couch-flyer 08-06-2004, 11:46 PM Thanks, I could not remember that name. Nor could I find anyone else who could either. :) trevorlane 08-26-2004, 08:37 AM My first guitar is a bass guitar. It was kind of an accident that I even started playing, but I'm glad I do. The bass is an Ibanez EDA900. House de Kris 08-26-2004, 05:05 PM Unlike virtually all the other respondents, I don't play the guitar. I dabble around with synthesizers. I like playing around with sounds themselves more than making music. In the synth world, that is called a sound designer. Fun for me, boring for others to hear. Attached is a picture of my studio. The sharp AK eye will recognize a Marantz 3200 preamp stuffed in that rack somewhere. grumpy 08-26-2004, 05:14 PM Whats the piece on top of the Marantz. Looks cool. House de Kris 08-26-2004, 05:54 PM I blew up and lightened the Marantz section of the photo. Directly above, is a CD-ROM drive and some CD-ROMs. Above that is an E-Mu ESI-32 sampler. Above that, in the next rack section, is an E-Mu E6400 Ultra sampler. Edit: forgot to mention that the Marantz preamp is used as the front end to the ESI-32 sampler. Hope that helps. grumpy 08-26-2004, 06:04 PM Thought it might be a scope of some type. Cool stuff ! Rockmonton 08-27-2004, 11:37 AM woahhh now thats a lot of rack mount stuff....... holy yeah at the music shops around here they laugh at guys like you, and they wont explain why! why is it! WHY!! ahh but that is a nice setup House de Kris 08-30-2004, 09:16 PM Originally posted by Rockmonton yeah at the music shops around here they laugh at guys like you, and they wont explain why! why is it! WHY!! ahh but that is a nice setup Thanks for the kind words about the setup. But, you want me to explain why people laugh at me? Well, OK. In my experience, people often laugh AT others because of things they lack. Like, they laugh because they lack compasion, knowledge, or understanding. Also, if you are in one group it is always a good thing to laugh at those in another group. This helps justify your existance and the errors of others, especially in the eyes of your friends. After all, it is their acceptance we seek, isn't it? Now, I am sure you weren't looking for a short essay on the problems with humanity, but something a little more specific to your question. Anyway, although you didn't state specifically, I'm assuming you are referencing music shops catering to the guitar player. My impression is that guitar players see synth players as dolts who merely press the "play" button on their sequencers then flail around the stage with their arms in the air. Of course, there are examples of this, but to assume that all synth players are like this is really a stretch. Just as if a synth player were to assume that all guitar players will lapse into a totally unispired wailing guitar solo and truly believe that people actually WANT to pay good money to see and hear this sort of musical masterbation on stage. Sure, some guitar players are like that, but probably not all of them. As you can see, you're not going to get a great answer from me. Perhaps you should ask the people laughing what is the source of their hysteria. Rockmonton 08-30-2004, 09:22 PM ^ thats why i'm a bass player, neither of the issues apply House de Kris 08-31-2004, 01:58 PM Perhaps no one has mentioned it, but synth players don't know the difference between a guitar and a bass. After re-reading what I wrote, I think I was to general in some of my generalizations. I think that the term I used of "synth player" is actually more like the keyboard player in a band. As such, they are usually quite skilled and don't fall under that 'push the play button' mentality. They also don't normally have setups like the one in my studio. On the other hand, there are techno producers who's rig resembles my setup closely. These guys do indeed push the play button and prance around the stage like they are god's gift to humanity. I'm guessing it is the latter type that are laughed at. Rockmonton 08-31-2004, 02:01 PM hmm probably, has aynone else noticed that almost all the techno guys seem to be italian or polish and wont stop talking about how proud they are of it? House de Kris 08-31-2004, 02:05 PM Is techno even still alive? Rockmonton 08-31-2004, 02:34 PM unfortunatley, yes Sandy G 08-31-2004, 02:59 PM Kris, that set-up is VERY impressive for a frustrated knob turner like Yrs Trly... Do you need to have a PhD in electrical engineering & music to run it though...?-Sandy G. Rockmonton 08-31-2004, 03:01 PM heck probabl,y imagine all the cabling in behind! House de Kris 08-31-2004, 03:14 PM Some degree in EE is necessary, but I don't think one needs to go overboard and shoot for the PhD. I'm only a BSEE, as such I need a diagram to operate it. Attached is my MIDI routing scheme. A little hard to read because I had to squish it down. Five routers and a couple processors in addition to instruments. Then of course there are the audio hookups, but they are on another diagram. Sandy G 08-31-2004, 05:39 PM Lessee now..the Head bone connecta to de neck bone..the Neck bone connecta to the Shoulder bone...<grin>-Sandy G. Reel 2 Reel 08-31-2004, 05:48 PM :lmao: |
