A couple of months back now, I stopped by at Grumpy's place for a bit. Grumpy threw on a previously unplayed record from A Perfect Circle (normally pretty hard rock for those not familiar) and were greeted with some funky porn music straight out of the San Fernando Valley. No one there had a clue what the hell was going on but it was hysterical.

Well, in an attempt to find the same record (metal version, not funk), I ran across a page devoted to an Oakland, CA funk/soul group called "The Perfect Circle". What do you think, is the mystery solved?

I tracked down a download of THE Perfect Circle's 1977 album. I'll bring it to the meet on Saturday for Grumpy - it's mp3 converted to wave but should give us an idea of how similar it is to the LP Grumpy had. It sounds pretty interesting but I can't quite remember the tunes Grump's LP had - perhaps more listeners anbd Grumpy will give us further info.

FWIW: it seems the 1977 LP from The Perfect Circle is pretty collectible - a mint LP sold on the 'bay for $143 last January. Limited independent pressing from Inner City Records.

Good work Dave:thmbsp:

Just think how limited edition Grumpy's mispressed record is?

I found the same download from a blog and it does have the sound of Grumpy's records. I wonder how many were pressed prior to figuring out they were sent the wrong master? :)

I am extremely familiar with "A Perfect Circle" which is the alternative rock supergroup featuring talent like Maynard James Keenan (Vocalist - Tool) and guitarist James Iha (Guitarist - Smashing Pumpkins)

I love the group and have listened to all three of their albums countless times over. I wasn't sure if most SMAC members were really familiar with the group, so for the music exchange, I plan to bring an APC sample album which will feature 4 or 5 songs from each record.

The mixdown on the groups latest album "eMOTIVe" is technically spectacular and offers a really cool listenening experience that I think most audiophiles would appreciate, if they could keep an open mind towards the groups style.

This is a phenominal group that offers an excelent listening session. I would encourage any and all, to at least sample. Thats why I'm bringing a sample disc to the exchange.

All of my digital music is converted to Apple Lossless which offers 6-8x the bitrate a typical ACC compressed file would. The sample CD which I am to bring will probably be converted to WAV to offer whoever receives the disc, high quality sound.

Look forward to seeing you all at the meet tomorrow!!

If Dave will have a TT setup at the meet I'll bring the LP with.

Correction: You're meaning the mis-pressed "The Perfect Circle" and NOT an LP from "A Perfect Circle"..

That will be interesting to hear!!!

Tom will be in heaven with a little mis-pressed perfect circle funk.

Yes, he has a record from "A Perfect Circle" based on the label and the cover. But when you play the music, it's not "A Perfect Circle", it's some sort of funk music. I'm just guessing that maybe what we heard was a mistake where they pressed the record with music from "The Perfect Circle".

eMOTIVe is the shit!!! The best album the group's produced.

I love practically every song on the album, but one that distinctly stands out with technical excelence to me is:

"Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums"

I also really like:

"When the Levee Breaks" and "Whats Going On" on top of many others.

All of those tracks and more will be on my APC sampler CD for the music swap.

Not sure...but bring it anyway perhaps we can convince him to set something up.

Something's up with this pressing...
Listened to it again on Saturday and all I know is it's not Tool.
No way, no how.

Happy Listening! :beatnik:

And the songs on the "mispressed" LP are different from dneuma04's "The Perfect Circle" group. Although the two bands are definitely in the same genre. We compared the downloaded CD with the LP Saturday.

The Lp is actually pretty listenable - funky soul from the 70s. And it does have that porn-flick vibe. Just not A Perfect Circle - like the cover and label say.

I'd be interested to find out what the hell happened at that pressing facility.....:scratch2:

Damn, not close enough to have been just another record from The Perfect Circle? :)

Well, yes, it could indeed be. Horns on the CD download - no horns on Grumpy's LP. Otherwise, pretty darn close. I'll have to check and see if they have any other work out there...

This reminds me of the time I bought what I thought was a John Denver greatest hits cd (that's what the cover on it said) only to play it and find it contained rap music. I actually checked out my system just to make sure I hadn't plugged my tuner into the cd outlet. I returned the cd for a refund, but now that I think about it I should have kept it as a collector's item.
