How involved a job is it to replace the tonearm on a Thorens 150? I've read many intriguing coments about what a difference an arm like a RB-250 can make on this deck. Something a novice could tackle?

I bought a TP16 Mark IV tonearm someone took off a Thorens 320. I figured I'd stay with a Thorens arm because I didn't want to lose the auto shutoff and pickup at the end of the record. The TP16 has superior anti-skating and VTA adjustments. Replacing the arm's on my list of projects, but I'm not on the far side of it so I'll watch and listen rather than comment as one who's done it. I've read many intriguing coments about what a difference an arm like a RB-250 can make on this deck. Something a novice could tackle? I've done it. It took a few nights. I removed the original arm, mine was a TD-150II. I desoldered the wiring from a terminal under the table. I made a new armboard from walnut and purchased a Rega arm support from these folks in the UK: http://www.soundsupports.com/thorensproducts.htm. The RB-250 mounts to the mounting plate on top of the new armboard. I used the able for a couple of years like that. I sold the table recently. The Rega arm was an improvement, but not a huge one. Which Thorens arm do you have? The arm with the small black weights is supposed to be good. That is the one I removed from my table. Cable Monkey 01-19-2009, 04:03 AM An RB250/251 is a budget arm and performs like one. The major advantage is its compatibility with more modern cartridges and its potential to improve considerably with relatively modest tweaks. If you are going to fit one, do so for its potential. mcp1 01-19-2009, 06:44 AM I'm not married to the idea of an RB-250...just one of the arms that I would consider...I would be open to other suggestions as well for this deck. Regas, Linn and SME arms seem to be most favored. I liked my Rega 250. Still a very popular arm, available as an option on some very expensive new decks. The SME 2009 was also an option for the table when it was new. I would check with this guy. He used to sell refurbed Thorens 150s: http://www.vinylnirvana.com/ |
