I just picked up a copy of this at my local music store. I bought the Blue Note vinyl re-issue and it came with a CD inside! That's the 1st time I've ever seen that. I've heard of free, legal mp3 downloads included with new vinyl, but never a physical CD.

I thought that was pretty cool. Granted the record/CD combo was $22, but that's not bad considering some of the inflated prices of re-issues (sans CD) in that small store.

Anyway, this is a fantastic album.....I've been wanting to listen to it for some time now and it's lived up to the hype. I love most albums with Ron Carter involved and this is no exception.

The vinyl/cd combo packaging is a new reissue idea created by Concord. Ever since Concord Music Group bought the rights to Blue Note (and Fantasy, which owned the rights to Prestige, Riverside, Pablo, OJC, Contemporary, ect) they have invented ever increasing ways to release the same product over and over again. With that said, it is a good value for those who don't already have the cd (original or RVG) or the vinyl (original or reissue). I'm almost tempted to buy some of those combos where I don't own the vinyl. I can always sell the cd albeit at a much lower price than what I originally paid.

Cheers

PS. Btw, Maiden Voyage is one of Herbie's most popular sessions and one I like very much. Have you heard Takin' Off yet? Another great session. After his stint with Miles Davis, Herbie got all funky on us. Something you'd probably like according to you avatar. :)

Edit: I got the Prestige RVG and Blue Note RVG reissue programs mixed up. Blue Note is owned by EMI which also owns Pacific Jazz, Roost, Roulette, Capitol and United Artists.

one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, IMHO. i've had my blue note original issue for decades. easily the equal of Kind of Blue in texture and feel, but where KOB was deeply introspective and melancholic, this one is open and ecstatic...IMHO

Next pick up "Speak Like a Child". I like that even better than MV.

Maiden Voyage is among my favorites by Herbie . also love "Empyrean isles"
cool they are doing the cd/vinyl , that's win/win .
I recently got Emmylou Harris's latest album $15 2-lp 180 gram & it alos came with 320 k mp3's & a cd copy as well , talk about covering all angles !
her label "Nonesuch" is starting to do that & why not ? costs a lable next to nothing to add the two .
