zenith2134 02-06-2009, 06:40 PM ....making one set of speaker wires longer than the other?
I must do this since my integrated is physically closer to the right channel speaker versus the left.
If anyone feels as though this would compromise the sound, I'll just make a longer set for the right and spool up the excess.
Interested to hear how the community feels about this. Thanks.
avionic 02-06-2009, 06:43 PM No problem..wire resistance doesn't get significant unless we are talking 100's or maybe 1000's of feet.
zenith2134 02-06-2009, 07:03 PM Thats what I thought too. Thanks avionic.
terryblulite 02-06-2009, 07:11 PM I've wondered if this would upset anybody to see a few feet coiled up behind my speakers.I've never worried about doing it.Even Rapco 14 ga is too expensive to cut and re-terminate every time I set a system up,or change one.I have a few pairs of even lengths of the Rapco and Monster 12ga(found the monster at work in a contractor's dumpster).I also have pairs of each in somewhat uneven lengths for just what you describe.I know some frown on that, but I run 2 and maybe 3 systems, plus set up PA several times a year.
I plan on making up an expensive short pair to run from the tube mono blocks to two speakers shortly - But these will be so close in length I won't worry about it.I'll still leave some slack to move the speakers around a bit for a few months to get them positioned how I like them.
elcoholic 02-06-2009, 07:13 PM I'm in the equal length speaker wire camp myself. There's a lot more going on than just simple DC resistance. If you believe in the possibility that high-end speaker wire composition, oxygen content, cryogenic treatment, stranding, etc. can make a difference then circuit length is a no brainer.
SpruceMoose 02-06-2009, 07:47 PM dont coil the extra. it adds inductance to the speaker wire run. if you must, just pile the extra up in a random heap.

Good point! On my high dollar system,I didn't mean to say I'd make them unequal, just a bit long.Actually typed a whole lot more than this, then realized it was th' coffee ramblin' on!

Well we are getting into the TOL realm now...Its all AC,DC ,Ohms,Amps ,Volts and reactance to me...Oldschool I guess...
elcoholic 02-06-2009, 08:18 PM Note I said if you believe ... Personally for my money I go as far as nice big fat wire. My main system is wired through the attic with #12 CLII.
zenith2134 02-06-2009, 08:31 PM Feel free to move this thread to TOL if you think it belongs there, mods.
I'm biwiring with 14awg copper stranded. Nothing fancy, just plain old speaker wire from ratshack. Whether or not this sounds good to everyone is irrelevant here, since it sounds good in my system.
Anywho, I think it might be better to make the speaker wires equal in length but I'm still not convinced. Probably just going to try it both ways and go by ear.
Gizmologist 02-06-2009, 10:53 PM So many independent testing labs over the last 25 years have come to the same provable and repeatable conclusion that plain ol Romex is the most practical wire for permanent installs. AS far as portable or hidden cabling I just use the SJO 14ga from HD. Rat Shack suff (cheeepy) woks just as well.
Don't forget that different cable lengths in your living room will have different time domains as well. T-I-C there
Every time I hear the gold, oxygen free, spiral wrap, mega twist ad nauseum hype I just have to chuckle and wish I was selling that wire. I could retire.
