The building that legendary bluesman Robert Johnson made his most famous recordings in is in danger of being demolished. It's about two blocks from the underground bunker I work in.
Here's the story. (ttp://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/020709dnmet508parkave.3bcdf7d.html)
And here's what it looks like now (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=508+park,+75201&sll=32.776387,-96.79683&sspn=0.008732,0.013561&g=1500+Marilla+St,+Dallas,+TX+75201&ie=UTF8&ll=32.778724,-96.793993&spn=0.008732,0.013561&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&cbll=32.778078,-96.793566&panoid=BDm6n_9nPY3WmjUhl-tLgA&cbp=12,79.95933459852648,,0,5) (Google Streetview).
Back in the 1960s, there was a blues club in a warehouse next door (the vacant lot). That's where I think the larger ensembles recorded back in the 1930s.

Perhaps that is why they are called golden moments in time.

I wonder what it looks like on the inside?
The decco exterior looks cool.

Dallas has almost no historical value, what little there is left is sooner or later mowed down for progress or like with the Cotton Bowl, too little too late. Sad town we live in actually, there's plenty of places to shop though.
Isn't Deep Ellum on the list of places soon to be gone for DART or something ?
I work for a Shutter manufacturing company and I remember going out to a huge new build for one of the execs at Cinemark a few years back. There was a cool house on their back property they had torn down to make room for a tennis court. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I bet the damn ass that had to have a tennis court is long gone now.

There should be a way that the national register of historical sites could be called in on this! DA*N and another national treasure is lost to (Progress) just like Sun records!!

Clapton recorded some of the tracks on 'Sessions For Robert J' in that building and the DVD shows them in the same room he used. If he hears that it's on the slate for demo, maybe he'll step up, buy it and make it into a little museum.

I thought he recorded in San Antonio...Anyway, looks like the area is total ghetto now, pretty hard to convince anyone to save it when you have that scene from Google street view going on all the time. In this economy that is only going to get worse.

He recorded about six tracks at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, IIRC.
Park St. looks so bad because of the homeless shelter across the street. At night, folks are covering the sidewalks. They won't check into the shelters for various reasons. It rough/getting rougher out there, but the homeless are something rather different.
BTW: The location is about 5 blocks away from the Neiman Marcus flagship store/HQ, and 2 blocks away from $500K town homes and lofts.

ZZ Top might be interested in this story seeing how they are fellow Texans.
