Clmrt 02-08-2009, 09:40 AM What...maybe they're free? At least he's advertising.
ckastner78 02-08-2009, 11:06 AM .. He was trashing them because of a "broken tweeter". How does someone throw something like that away?
Arkay 02-08-2009, 11:17 AM Could have been worse. Could have been 1bs...
I hope SOMEONE rescued these! Please, someone post pics here of these speakers, safe and sound.
Sam Cogley 02-08-2009, 12:58 PM Had I seen that, I would have driven the two hours each way to rescue them from the trash...
ckastner78 02-08-2009, 02:01 PM All my relatives live in Tulsa. :tears: What the heck was I doing last Sunday? Yes, please, tell me someone on here got them.
ckastner78 02-09-2009, 02:55 PM Well, since we're in dollars and sense, how much were these bad boys worth anyways?
similost 02-09-2009, 02:59 PM To some people, maybe it's just not worth the effort.. maybe he never liked the sound of them to begin with? Does that make the guy wrong? They belong to him, and if he could care less about money.. more power to him...

And those are the people I love gettin' stuff from!
similost 02-09-2009, 03:06 PM LOL.. same here.. if nothing else, you get to pick it up for free from the curb, because more than likely the guy won't be making a special drive to the dump..
Jcricket 02-10-2009, 09:32 AM The link is dead. What were these?
Van_Isle 02-10-2009, 08:45 PM Link still works for me, but since it will die anyway ....
"Vintage top of the line Infinity Monitor IIA speakers-broken tweeter-move fast and they're yours otherwise going in dumpster today"

joeinTO 02-11-2009, 09:42 PM A dum-ass for sure...the pair of Infinity 11a`s I aquired last week are still schocking the shit-outta-me!! This pair of speakers seem to sound good with all music.
ckastner78 02-12-2009, 03:55 AM wow. Just. Wow. Holy crap guys - talk about a fluke! I emailed the lady, and very kindly asked her what she was thinking putting a $2000 pair of speakers out on the curb like that (broken or not). And .. she emailed me back.
Apparently her mother had put the listing up because she wanted to get rid of them. She said they were still available and she'd only charge me $50 to take them off her hands. I passed.
Yeah, right .. :D I called up my relatives in Tulsa and had them pick them up today! I know they're related and all, but I still paid them $50 each to get them for me (I'm a nice guy). So - I've acquired a pair of Monitor IIa's for a grand total of $150. Completely serious. Now I just need to figure out how to get them back to Colorado ... :scratch2:
I'll post pics when I get them ...
robobxman 02-13-2009, 01:02 PM Cool.
Looking forward to the pics.

Jezus. I should have emailed her...I'm only about 2 hours away. That would have been a worthwhile Saturday trip. Great score!
joeinTO 02-13-2009, 10:04 PM First thing you`ll notice wiith this version will be the grills....on both fronts and the backs. Identical eccept the back grills serving no obvious purpose but looks. They will need refoaming if not done already and hopefully [B]all[B] drivers, cept the HF tweeters you mentioned, are working. Still, should be some great sounding speakers. 8ohm I believe.

toxcrusadr 02-14-2009, 01:10 AM Holy fargin' balloofie. Nice ending to that story!
ckastner78 02-14-2009, 02:48 AM Holy fargin' balloofie. Nice ending to that story!
I do like the fargin balloofies. :D
Yeah, total total fluke. I probably wouldn't have even emailed her if I wasn't so damn bitter! Hah - just goes to show that you should be bitter about things you dont get in on. Great theme with V-Day coming up tomorrow, er today. :thumbsdn:
Anyway, they're gonna need a bit of work. Apparently her husband threw away the grilles, which doesn't upset me too much. I think it would be pretty easy to get a bit of MDF board and cut out a good pattern, paint it flat black, and cover it in some dark linen. (Any threads on here about making grilles??)
The only bummer is that I *think* one of the walsh tweeter horns is missing, and the other one is damaged. Those aren't gonna be easy to come by - not sure what I'm gonna do about that one. I'll have these in my posession by mid-march, but I should be able to post some pics by tomorrow!
ckastner78 02-14-2009, 02:51 AM Oh, to clarify on the tweeters, once again, I'll have to verify this when I get them, but I think the tweeters themselves are okay, just the horns are messed up. And yep, I know for a fact that at least the woofers will need to be re-foamed. This is gonna be a fun project!
ckastner78 02-23-2009, 01:28 AM Still have to wait till the middle of next month to actually have these bad boys ...
Here's a couple of uh .. quality pictures. I'll have to ask for some more specific ones tomorrow. At least it gives you an idea of the condition. From what the lady told me, these should be in working order, minus the damage to the tweets. I'm not too familiar with the walsh tweeters, but from what I've been reading, the horn seems like an integral part of their design, like they wouldn't function right without it. Is this true? Can a replacement horn be had if the driver is okay, or is the horn an actual part of the driver on these?
Heres the pics:

Regarding the Walsh tweeters, the entire driver(s) will have to be replaced but they do come up on eBay now and again and can be had for a reasonable price. In fact I think a pair of them closed yesterday. You might also check that the tinsel leads on the dome mid-range drivers are not broken and if they are intact be careful not to damage them while transporting, especially with no grills as they are very vulnerable. The one in the photo you posted looks O.K. Also, the woofer in that photo does not look original as the originals had a doped paper cone with a heavier layer from the edge of the dust caps out a couple of inches, then a lighter layer from there out to the surrounds. I'll attach a pic of one of mine for reference.
Having owned a pair of IIa's since new - I paid around $900 for them and still have the receipt around somewhere - I can vouch for the fact that they are a fine speaker and while they don't require lots of power, the more you give them the better they sound.
I'd be glad to help with measurements and/or photos when you get around to re-creating the grills so be sure to post a request. And if you really like the IIa's, you might even think about recapping the crossovers as an additional project. I did mine a year or so ago and it was worthwhile.
ckastner78 02-23-2009, 12:03 PM Hey Coastsider - thanks for volunteering help, I'll most likely take you up on that! Yeah, I've noticed that about the woofer in the picture - all the other pictures I've seen of the IIa's have ones that look like yours. The one on there looks more like the watkins woofers. Are the originals not watkins? Or maybe, did they start installing watkins later in the production run? I have no idea on these - my vintage Infinity knowledge only goes back to the 80's. :scratch2:
dokblues 02-23-2009, 03:03 PM Nice save! They look like they can certainly be salvaged and brought back to life, great speakers. Now it`s time for a Road Trip!

Watkins woofers were never used in the Monitors, just on later lines like the Quantums and RS. Infinity did use some single voice coil poly cone woofers as well later on so they may be one of those, or possibly just a non-OEM 12" replacements. You can find out more once you have them as most Infinity woofers have a model number stamped on the magnet.
Do the speakers have the wood tops? They are not shown in your photo. The monitors came with two types of top - wood and tops that matched the front and back grills.
ckastner78 04-05-2009, 01:03 AM Hey guys - finally got these bad boys a couple weeks ago. I'm gonna be starting a new post in the speakers forum as it's going to be all tech questions and opinions / suggestions from here out. I'll post the link when I start the new thread.
