View Full Version : UPS claims- typical time frame?
thedelihaus 02-09-2009, 05:39 PM anyone know the typical time frame for a UPS insurance claim to be decided on?
Last one I attempted was a multi-week drawn out process fraught with mistakes and errors, sloppily handled, and in the end, futile.
The current one is in limbo- they picked up the goods a week ago but are still showing they are "scheduled for pickup". And promises of "getting right back to you, sir".
Just looking for a timeframe from others attempting a claim.
grumpy 02-09-2009, 05:40 PM Ive had them take anywhere from 5 days from date of pickup to issuing the check and as long as a month. Heard of much longer times though..
thedelihaus 02-09-2009, 05:51 PM Thank you Dave.
merrylander 02-10-2009, 07:13 AM Generally takes about a week for them to issue the check, last one they looked at the picture I sent and paid.

SoCal Sam 02-13-2009, 09:10 AM My last one took one month. I knew the packaging would not pass and I strongly suspected the seller would rather take a negative than pay. So I declined to let the shipper company pickup and instead sent a series of photos. The field inspector came out twice to my home but luckily I was away both times. They approved the claim and sent the check to the seller. The seller then emailed me asking what I was going to do. I suspected he wanted to pocket some of the money. So, I sent another strongly worded email and finally, he refunded the claim to me.
The system sort of works but has major holes. The shipper's policy is to not disclose the result of the claim so the the seller could have said "denied" and pocketed the money. This scenario could have easily played out. I do all the work on the claim. The claim gets paid to the seller and the seller stiffs me. In effect, he could have gotten paid twice and rewarded for his "hall of shame" packing job.
thedelihaus 02-13-2009, 03:56 PM I won't stiff the buyer- a very cool AKer.
I packed well, but per request of the buyer did put two items in the box- not my typical modus operandi when packing, but there was plenty of packing between items and it saved on overall shipping costs.
Of course, the box was heavy, and probably suffered some disgruntled employee's wrath. As both items do not work.
Still in limbo at the UPS site- says "Goods awaiting pickup", though they were picked up, well, it'll be three weeks Monday I believe?
RichPA 02-13-2009, 09:01 PM One to three weeks IME.
thedelihaus 02-18-2009, 12:46 PM Denied. Said there was too much weight inside the box. "The single box was not adequate to support the weight inside the box".
Funny, they delivered it fine. Box I'm told wasn't damaged. The foam inside was crushed due to the weight of the goods internally. Merchandise suffered internal issues and tray door of CD player must have taken a hit, I'm guessing.
At least 2" worth of foam used as well if not more, around all goods and in between items, as recommended by UPS.
Ain't that the bees knees.
cdfac 02-18-2009, 01:56 PM What do they mean "too much weight?" The box was rated to hold like 65 pounds. The two Denon 1500IIs only weighed like 25 lbs a piece, right?
The interesting thing was the shipping tag said 70 lbs, but there's no way this weighed that much. A mistake, perhaps?
thedelihaus 02-18-2009, 02:42 PM I shipped out at an estimated 70lbs.
To err on the safe side, and to note, this also costs more which profits UPS.
The feeling I'm getting is they are looking for an excuse to deny, and claiming two items in the box constituted too much weight.
I'm going to make an effort to fight it but it doesn't look favorable.
A trick I'm told is to use UPS packaging services- this of course costs a lot more but then the packer at the store is responsible for any damage.
Add $20-$30+ for shipping on top of the regular cost and of course they can ship it in multiple boxes.
morgan 03-17-2009, 10:37 AM Don't bet that UPS will guarantee a claim if the unit was packed by UPS--I'm still waiting------------------------------------------------
