So seeing as I travel all over the country for business, and find myself with down time, I undulge my hobby of records (I actually bought a vintage turntable and receiver on the road last summer so I could listen to my finds). Most of the time the shopping is a big dissapointment as I go home with 1/2 dozen Lp's or none at all. I have been surprized by a few places, Milwaukee,WI and Seattle, WA among them for very good vinyl shops...but Vegas just outdid both. No I didn't go to the infamous Wax-trax that I have heard so many horrible things about (I refuse to reward an ornery shop owner with my money, and I don't think getting attitude makes you cool...I'm an adult) but I did visit both Zia's records locations for a decent selection of $3-4 records and all 3 Record City locations for the more collectible things (jazz among them) and the famous dollar bins. All were VG+ to M- condition for the vinyl and G-VG+ for the covers (I care more about listening the the album than the cover), so many are replacing copies of albums I either have re-issues of, or are in lesser condition.

So...I am now looking at these two stacks and realizing that I over-did it a little bit, but considering I could have been blowing my money on slots or the Black-Jack tables, I think I'm going home a winner...you tell me..

He is actually one of the BIGEST A-Holes on this planet. I remember him from our teenage years in N.Y . I hand left the world of record collecting and about 12 years ago went into his shop at that time in the Pocconos and recognized him and introduced myself . I related some memories of years gone by. All well and good. He had a RnB record I had lusted after and never had the bucks to buy. My wife offered to buy it for me for my birthday and he offered to sell for $200 less than the posted price!!.
I declined but my wife knew I really wanted it. She called him to next day and wanted to buy if for me at the reduced price and he rudely informed her that was ONLY the price for right then , if she wanted it ,it was going to be full price.Obviously no sale. What a rude S.O.B. He was actually lucky I didn't call him and confront him him with his B.S lies when he was doing a radio show. Happy you spent no $ there.

Sounds like my old haunts are still thumping.

Indeed they are! Thanks again for the advise, and I'm glad I steered clear of Wax Trax. The experience of dealing with such a nasty person would have tarnished the otherwise sweet taste in my mouth right now. Zia's was just like "Record and Tape trader" back at home where all the albums are tagged with a fixed price, regardles of how rare. These stores usually have a plethora of albums we all already own (how many copieds of Billy Joel's Greatest Hits do we need), but sometimes there are a few gems tucked in, thus it's worth the dig (that's where I found the UK Kinks album, as well as Dylan's New Morning...for $2.99 each).

Record City was very unusual as all three locations offered something different. The main store (the one by the strip is now the main store as the one on Charlston is now the "budget store") has the best stuff. The uber rare, great jazz, full selection of classic rock titles (originals not just the 80's represses), and the prices are fair (between $4-15 for most) unless it's super rare. I didn't pay more than $15 for any title as they were having a "buy 4 or more and get 25% off" sale. The one two blocks from there was odd as they had a fair selection of rock, crap for jazz, and one of the best classical selections I have ever seen in a vintage vinyl store (although all the TAS titles and labels of course were cherry picked). The one on Charlston had more DVD than I could fathom, fair to medicore rock section, crap again for jazz, no classical, but fantastic dollar bins (about 2k records to pick through). Many of the dollar records I picked up were perfect except for a torn spine, or ring-wear, or a light non-audible scratch on the Lp. I guess the owner has figured out what sells in what parts of town.

So...all three are worth checking out.

Thanks again for the prod in the right direction,

James R.
