I still prefer the sound of analog, so I keep my half-speed masters around in case I get a little peckish. What half-speed masters do you own?

Here are a few of mine:

Mobile Fidelity:

Alan Parsons Project - I Robot
Bernie Krause - Citadels Of Mystery
Earl Klugh - Finger Paintings
Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good
Joe Sample - Rainbow Seeker
Al Jarreau - All Fly Home
Styx - Grand Illusion
Atlanta Rhythm Section - Champagne Jam
Al Stewart - Year of the Cat
Pablo Cruise - A Place In The Sun

CBS Mastersound:

Paul McCartney - Band on the Run
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Waters
Billy Joel - 52nd Street
Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow
Carole King - Tapestry
Boston - Boston

Nautilus Superdisc:

Al Stewart - 24 Carrots
The Cars - The Cars

I have many more than this, but these are the ones that I find the most outstanding. Don't get me wrong, I have "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd, and it sounds great, but I don't listen to rock as much as I use to. I have found myself getting more into jazz as I get older!

Let me know what you have in your collection! :thmbsp:

Jason :music:

PS-For those of you that have Eric Clapton's "Slowhand", give the song "The Core" a good listen, and you will hear the sound of the stick hitting the cymbal if you listen closely. Not the sound of the cymbal, but the sound of the stick hitting it. Trust me, it's there! :scratch2:

Can't say I blame ya! But I think that it would eventually get the better of me, and I would have to crack it open. Of course, I would immediately treat the records with Last Record Preservative, and then enjoy....well, there are more things to do than that, but that is the biggest one.

I also have "Abbey Road" on MFSL, and I still think that the sound is phenomenal....I wouldn't trade it for anything...ok, maybe a UHQR, but that is about it!

Let's see, I got married in 1989 and never set up any of my equipment for the 17 years I was married. Got divorced a couple years ago and am just now trying to get my stuff reconditioned so I can use it again. My original SX-3900 caught fire playing Black Sabbath and it melted the patch cables to the PL-L1000 so I need to get those replaced. Then I want to upgrade the cartridge and have been trying to figure out what to get for it. After that I'll be ready to crank up the vinyl again!

I have a couple of The Beatles single albums in Mobile Fidelity and I think I might have something else but I can't remember. The albums are packed away right now. I have Pink Floyd's DSOTM in 180 gram vinyl when the came out with the 40th Anniversary Issue - actually I have 2 of them. I have AC/DCs 180 gram boxed set too. Can't wait to play that!

jhaan92
02-09-2009, 11:31 PM
Oh, that is a tragedy...you damaged a Pioneer PL-L1000 (I have one). Well, the good news is that the original patch cables were not that good to begin with, and it gives you a good reason to put in better ones.

Think of it this way: At least you set you sh*t on fire listening to something that ROCKS....and Black Sabbath is a classic!

Jason

PS-How do you like your 1250. I tend to like it more than my Dragon.

I recommend the Audio Technica AT-150MLX. I borrowed one not too long ago, and I really liked it. It had a nice neutral sound, and very little inner groove distortion (well, you won't have that problem, will you?). It has a boron cantilever, and uses a nude square shank MicroLine diamond stylus....Shibata!

MFSL:
The Beatles - Abbey Road
Supertramp - Crime of the Century

Nautilus SuperDisc:
Pablo Cruise - Worlds Away (unfortunately also a dbx disc, and I really have no intention of buying a dbx decoder)

I just picked up the 1250 and it's getting a tune up right now. I used to use the 950 all of the time to make tapes to play in my vehicles, back before CDs came out. And the tapes sounded awesome. I never bought pre-recorded tapes, they pretty much sounded like crap compared to the ones I made. The 707 got used alot and that's what I was listening to when the 3900 caught on fire.

I have the regular version of "Worlds Away" (non-dbx version). I am not impressed with it. I thought that it was just the mastering done by Nautilus....but the I bought it when it came out on CD, and I have determined that the producer should have been burned at the stake. It sounds so lifeless and dull. Bass is also boomy.

As for the MFSL titles-great albums.....I love the sound of Crime, and with the Lexicon, the harmonica sounds like he is waaaaay the hell out there .

Where are you getting the 1250 fixed? I need to get mine calibrated and new belts installed. When you get yours back, make a tape with it....it will blow your 950 out of the water! Also, I love the RT-909, but I was never a fan of the 707, just because it didn't take 10.5 inch reels. Oh well.

I've got the Mobile Fidelity half-speed of Sticky Fingers by the Stones. It's still the best sounding version I've come across.

Sounds like a good idea....except for the fact that everyone wants a buttload of money for MFSL titles. I mean, 50 bucks for an open album, and the cover has ringwear?! I wouldn't pay that! Nor would I pay 200 bucks for an unopened copy of Gino Vannelli's "Powerful People". Most of the tunes on that album weren't that good. I think that people want too much for MFSL titles, and I refuse to pay that kind of price for them.

Now, the ones that you want to get are the CBS Mastersound titles. Usually you can buy them on ebay for anywhere from around 10-35 bucks, and I have never had one arrive in any condition less than they (the seller) said it was in! I think that quite a few of their titles rival the quality of MFSL, and they cost a whole lot less!

Oh? Why's should I replace the Dragon with a Tandberg? Are they any good-I've never listened to one!

I couldn't give up the Dragon though, it belonged to my uncle-I am a bit sentimental, so I keep it to remind me of him (RIP). My 1250 belonged to my dad, but he quit using it, and I traded him for my pair of ADS L710's that I wasn't using-I use Ohm Walsh 2's....I like the soundstage better-plus there is no delay in the sound between the frequencies.

It came with two non-Nautilus copies of the same album. One was in good shape, so I kept it. The dbx copy is pristine. I've never even heard of the group, so I have no idea what to expect from it.

I haven't spun it yet. The collection I bought had a beat-up regular copy that happened to still have the lyrics sheet. It's now in with the MFSL disc.

Damn, I'd love to find that in a vinyl hoard.

I pulled the two MFSL titles out of that load of vinyl I bought on Saturday (somewhere around 600 discs). Once I saw the copy of Abbey Road (and the three non-MFSL Doors albums), I knew I was going to be buying a mountain of vinyl.

Just received Led Zeppelin Mothership the label says it is 1/2 speed mastered. Sounds great, love the details and how clear everything sounds. Made me realize that even though my speakers are good I should already start thinking about upgrading them.

They had their previous album "A Place In The Sun" released on MFSL, and it is a phenom album. It was the only reason why I got "Worlds Away" and I wished that I hadn't spent the 10 bucks....how sad is that?

hey, how does 52nd Street sound? I just bought a copy from a little known record store near my house for 15 bucks, unopened.

I have all of those mfsl titles except for Katy Lied. I am still looking for a copy that is in either excellent shape, or sealed....but no luck.

Haha, I have "Thriller" on half-speed, but I guess that I shouldn't laugh, it is an excellent album.

I am jealous of your UHQR'S though, I only have "Finger Paintings"

Is the Beatles Collection any good? I only have "Abbey Road" on MFSL, but I have heard good things about the collection.

MFSLs generally have a bit of EQ thrown in. Tha being said, I generally like 'em. I don't look at them as the definitive versions, but in some cases (Steely Dan "Aja" and DSotM), they are my favorite versions.

My first CBS half-speed was "Switched on Bach" by Walter/Wendy Carlos. This one sounds gloriously weird. It's the type of LP that gets your wife to ask "what the hell were you listening too?"

I hadn't listened to my copy for a couple of decades so I broke it out and gave it a spin this past weekend. I must say I was impressed. The surface noise was so low I thought I was listening to a CD. Overall the mix is pretty good for the day. Break the seal and enjoy.

I did break the seal and enjoyed immensely. I also noticed that the surface noise was slightly, and I mean SLIGHTLY quieter than MFSL albums, which is suprising! A piano sounds so great on a half-speed master......
