View Full Version : Saturday the 10th South of Detroit
Well, I probably should have started a separate thread awhile back. You are invited to my house for a cook-out and tunes. This will kickoff @ around 2:00PM on Saturday.
I'll probably just throw some burgers and dogs on the grill. Maybe something fancier depending on the number of people. I'll have the Altecs going on tubes, and a couple of SS rigs set-up. The bringing of gear and beer is more than welcome.
PM me for my address and/or directions. I usually just give my address and ask that people use Mapquest. I've had great success with it. If you are thinking of attending please let me know soon rather than later so I can better plan.

Not really a bump. I just wanted to change the color of the checkmark in case any locals have overlooked this thread.
So far I have replies from 2 AK members and a couple of guys on the Polk site. The more the merrier.
Andyman, and Mr. & Mrs. Botrytis came over today. We had a great time. We listened to a few systems, ranging from my Altec & tube rig to bookshelfs & Botrytis's massive Mitsubishi amp. The main theme was pleasant conversation. Not just audio, but about life in general. It was wonderful.
One guy from Club Polk showed. Others were supposed to have, but at least the one I wanted to show the most did. Goinggonzo is his screen name and he has quite the home theater. He seemed pretty impressed with what HE and tubes can do, as I think this was his first exposure.
I wish I had pics, but my camera took a deuce on me about 2 months ago and I haven't gotten it going yet. There might be a couple of pictures to be posted, but they are just mug shots.

Dang i really wanted to make it. Spent the better part of the day chasing down a new clothes dryer and then changing electrical crap around to make it work
I would have preferred to spend the day listening and shooting the chit with you guys. Glad you guys had a good time.

I believe everybody present wished you could've made it, but fully understand (sort of) what you must be going through and that you have more serious obligations at hand.
Besides, I've got a new counterweight for the Dual and an Anti-skate for the Thorens. I've got left over brownies! :deal:

Looks like you guys had a great time. In the third pic with the Altecs is that a Soundcraftsmen PCR-800 amp on the TV tray? Was it being used on the Altecs?
just curious...

We were going to use it in place of my Mitsubishi which decided to give up the left channel. :( :( :( I guess it is time to get it fixed by a real tech and not by a fly-by-nighter (I mean ME!!!).
We used an ST70 for the Altecs - way overkill for those speakers!!

Sorry for not posting sooner, but I've been on the go all day today and just got home.
What a great time yesterday over at Skis. Those Altecs with the ST-70/Van alstine PAS-4x? Toshiba SD-3950 (modded but which exact mods aside from a power cord as big as a bratwurst are unknown) really, really sounded fine. Got to hear Botrytis's Royds again and those are some fine small speakers too; much bigger sound than one would expect and some very nice highs to boot.
The SX-1010 he won looks marvelous; I'm not sure he should show it to anyone else who entered the raffle; it's that sweet.
The Red Paduak cab is a wonder; yaksplat did an excellent job all around on it.
Ski was a great host too, and it was nice to see the Botrytii (??)again. Great equipment, music, food, libations and company all made for a most excellent afternoon.
We certainly are blessed with a fine bunch of folks on this forum. If one of these gatherings ever happens within a few hours of you; go by all means, or you'll be clobbering yourself later for not attending!
Thanks again, Ski; it was fabulous!!
Let me try a little cut and paste action. Wish me luck.
For those not following the 3950 mods it involves replacement of all the power supply capacitors with low ESR value Panasonic capacitors, a higher value low ESR switching supply cap, premium Black Gate caps throughout the audio board, bypass capacitors on all supply circuits, main power supply noise elimination components, ceramic fuse and output opamp. For an additional cost of $60 I can add a few additonal mods which include a high performance IEC connector with a high quality 10 guage power cord, chassis damping with dynamat, a ground loop elimination wire from analog board to power supply board and grounded noise eliminating heat sinks on the processor and other heat generating componets.
It looks like it worked.
