View Full Version : A question about album reviews and the AK Music Forum...
Argyle 02-11-2009, 02:00 PM I get an email every week from Newbury Comics (a local record store) that lists this week's new releases. If there's anything I'm interested in - I check online for album reviews. I know that everyone's taste differs (and everyone is a critic) but I do like reading reviews. It's nice to get some insight even if the response is negative.
Obviously we can post here in the music forum any time, but this forum really doesn't seem to get as much attention or responses. Maybe there is a way we can do special "review" threads with a "star" value associated? I dunno - just thinking aloud on that one.
So my primary question is this - where do you guys usually go for album reviews? I read Rolling Stone but I often find them to be obnoxious - plus they don't review very much. I never understood that - to me, they should pump out more album reviews than anyone. Plus I'd really like reviews of albums that aren't new. Old stuff is new to everyone at some point.
but anyway... your thoughts?
onepixel 02-11-2009, 02:30 PM When I get an itching for something new, I'll check Amoeba and Rasputin's web site for reviews. I like Rasputin a bit better becasue they will have sound clips from the albums.
I've posted a couple of reviews of both new and old albums in the Music Reviews sub-forum. Writing a "proper" review is a bit time consuming, but fun. Seems to get a lot of "views", but not a whole lot of comments. But most have been positive. Some of the reviews did perk my interest and since have purchased a couple of albums and have been pretty happy.
ranf1970 02-11-2009, 02:51 PM I usually read reviews on Amazon.
Dale A B 02-11-2009, 03:21 PM Amazon and itunes for me, plus you can listen to excerpts. Sure beats out the options we had in the 70's!

Granted, there are some wackos on this site; well actually some of them are pretty funny, but I've discovered lots of new music along with reviews here.
MichaelJ 02-11-2009, 03:55 PM I go to allmusic.com pretty often for both reviews and to learn a bit about the history of the band in question.
and who are you callin' a wacko Ed? :)

That comment puzzles me. Just look at the right-hand columns and see how many replies and views many of our posts get. I can't keep up with all of the daily posts in this one small piece of AK.
Post up a few and see what happens.

grumpy 02-11-2009, 08:11 PM It puzzles me a bit to since theres nearly 9,000 threads with over 193,000 posts in them.
Our music forum is certainly not the end all be all of its type but theres no way I can read them. Its fun to try from time to time. Got some great music suggestion.
jhaan92 02-11-2009, 08:26 PM I listen to the Weather Channel....I know that sounds funny, but there are some great jazz tunes that I had never heard before. A good example would be a woman by the name of Joyce Cooling. They used her song "Mildred's Attraction" for the rain song, and the rest of her music is equally as good.
I really don't listen to too much new music. I usually stick to classical, classic rock, and most forms of jazz. That way, all the reviews are usually accurate. But if I was going to listen to something new, I usually check out www.windowsmedia.com and I have found that their reviews are usually spot on. They're also not political like Rolling Stone, who seem to thing that the band of the same name is the greatest band to walk this earth. What about Marvin Gaye, Chet Atkins, The Beatles, Simon & Grafunkel? They released much more introspective music than the Stones, yet they never got the attention from Rolling Stone that they deserved. Just my opinion, but that is the primary reason as to why I don't pay attention to their magazine anymore. They ignore anyone who is different-or mercilessly bash their music, until it gets into public favor, and then they say that they supported it all along.
Ok, I am going to step down from my soapbox now and shuffle down the line, but like I said, I find that www.windowsmedia.com tends to rate music quite fairly, and I like it. Just type in the name of the artist in the search box and away it goes!
Best of Luck!
Jason

Right - I didn't say no one posts there; I just was commenting that often those posts don't get as much attention as others about scoring inexpensive gear, picking up LPs, etc. Which is not a criticism by any means; just an observation.
I definitely plan on exploring the music forums and posting my own reviews since I am more happy with my system now than ever.
RT Fan 02-13-2009, 11:16 AM Argyle: Why don't you start a cd/lp recommendation thread? Anyone and everyone could chime in to comment on cds that are important to them, or something they have come across that peaked their interest. Sounds like a win/win for everyone here.
Brett a 02-13-2009, 11:35 AM I've thought about writing music reviews and posting them here. I might just do it some day.
I've had an appreciation for many CD/LP reviews I've read on Audio Asylum
I go Bitchfork for current artists.
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/record_reviews
Amazon for general crusing
And Goolge searches for specific titles.
