View Full Version : Bubble Gum Top 40 Pop!
jgmacv 02-12-2009, 09:49 PM Do any of you have a song that would be considered bubble gum top 40 pop, narrow it down to tunes from the late 60s to early 70s, that you really like (sing along with it while by yourself in the car)? I know, uncool as hell and dorky to admit, but we all have our guilty pleasures. Examples would be "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies and "Dizzy" by Tommy Roe. I will admit to a couple of Bobby Sherman tunes, but for this thread, I'll throw out my favorite as "Lay a Little Lovin' On Me" by Robin McNamara. Step up and be heard!!!
Saint Johnny 02-12-2009, 09:57 PM Well. To paraphrase an old LP title..."Bubblegum Pop IS The Naked Truth".
I think the current PC correct term for 'bubblegum' is now 'Sunshine Pop', though there may be a lot of
genre cross-pollenization(sp?) going on.
Saint Johnny 02-12-2009, 10:01 PM I'm partial to 'The Rain, The Park , And Other Things', by the Cowsills.
Does that count?
Dave1384 02-12-2009, 10:03 PM :pistols:UGGGG, get me out of this thread!!......I would go for any button on the car radio if "The Morning After", came up. What you should have asked was what was the first song you heard on the car radio when you received your driver's license..... The Rain, the Park wasn't too bad.

I think that Lou Christie was around quite a bit before bubblegum music came around.
But, my favorite was Tommy James, Crimson and Clover, I liked to wear that 45 out, I played it so much!
steerpike2 02-13-2009, 05:44 PM Examples would be "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies and "Dizzy" by Tommy Roe
Hey, lets just put on the "Stars on 45" LP! ? Both volumes - on the auto-changer.
You can denigrate those songs as much as you like, they are still infinitely more full of artistry and musical skill than the orgiastic whining that gets "pop airtime" in the 21st century.
Saint Johnny 02-13-2009, 05:55 PM Tommy James? Lou Christie? These are 'bubblegum'?
Not where I come from.
Why not just throw in The Four Seasons, and The Beach Boys?
outshined 02-13-2009, 05:55 PM Bobby Goldsboro "Honey"

Saint Johnny 02-13-2009, 07:12 PM While Gerry And The Pacemakers are a personal fave, especially 'Ferry Cross The Mersey'!:thmbsp:
They are not really 'bubblegum'! And I wouldn't call Herman's Hermits 'bubblegum' either.
That's more 'British Invasion' stuff, and the prime 'bubblegum' era came after 'Merseybeat' and after the 1966-67 'Psych Pop' stuff.
outshined 02-13-2009, 07:23 PM Would youse say that Bubblegum is more of an American phenomenon, then? :scratch2:
Cactus Bob 02-13-2009, 07:35 PM People here are confusing what you would call "Teeny Bopper" with "Bubblegum". Teeny Bopper can be a endless array of corny pop tunes. Basically starting in the late 50's the advent of rock n' roll and continuing to this day.
Bubblegum only lasted for about 3 years or so 1966,1967, 1968?
There really weren't that many groups/songs in that so called genre.
(probably for the better) but it sure was fun!

Saint Johnny 02-13-2009, 07:43 PM Would youse say that Bubblegum is more of an American phenomenon, then? :scratch2:
I'd say yes!
Using a strict definition of 'bubblegum', it was predominantly an American phenomenon from 1968-1972, roughly. The Brits tended to morph it more into 'Glam' or 'Glitter'. British takes on bubblegum tended to be slightly harder edged and more subversive than the US contemporaries. Think...Gary Glitter, T Rex, and Slade, as almost 'bubblegum', but Brit style.
Just my .02 cents.

outshined 02-13-2009, 07:52 PM Good way to put it. A passing phase that lead to what might be called another passing phase. But both will still be stood up and counted!
Cactus Bob 02-13-2009, 08:01 PM Spice Girls and the Boy Bands were NOT Bubblegum just teeny bopper. Bubblegum was only a trend in a short period of time. Just like my parents might have listened to How Much is The Doggie in The Window, Teeny Bopper before the phrase was coined.
Saint Johnny 02-13-2009, 08:11 PM To me the crowning achievement of bubblegum music, the melding of most pop/rock/teen genres into something almost completely unique, and world conquering was, KISS.
And finding out that Neil Bogart was behind both sort of legitimizes my theory, to some extent, anyway.
Tarl Of Gor 02-13-2009, 08:34 PM I didn't think the British had teeth to chew gum.
jgmacv 02-13-2009, 08:42 PM I submit these additional Tommy Roe classics:

I pretty much agree, perhaps going as late as 1970. Some artists/groups could have certain tunes that meet this criteria, or certainly be close (Neil Diamond - "Cherry, Cherry").

For the record: Len Barry did "1-2-3" in 1965. The 1910 Fruitgum Co. did "1,2,3 Red Light" in 1968 -- which featured one of the grooviest album covers ever.
