The wife and I went to see Bettye LaVette in concert last night on the campus of SMU in Dallas. Except for a technical glitch during the first three songs everything was fantastic. She came out with her band, keys, drums, bass and guitar and proceeded to throw down! Unfortunately something in the high treble was off, initially I thought it was a speaker near us had a blown tweeter. After the second song we got up and moved to a different spot, it was better but still not quite right, I leaned over to my wife and said 'it's the mic.' seconds later someone came out and handed her another mic. She apologized and moved on. From there on, all was good in the world! She did about an hour and a half set, the highlights for me were an acapella rendition of 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' a Sinead O'Connor song, 'Sleep to Dream' a Fiona Apple song and of course 'He Made a Woman Out of Me'. At one point the band stopped playing she stepped out on a little stage projection and sang parts of a song without amplification; it was a bit of a wow moment, goose bumps and all. Great show, thank you Bettye

Since the discovery & release of her album Souvenirs (2000) and its subsequent reissue as Child Of The Seventies (2006) by Rhino Handmade, there's been a surge in the revival of Bettye LaVette's career. Since the release of Souvenirs she's put out a live album & two studio albums, the most recent in 2007. Don't know if she's working on a new studio release at this time, but she remains in demand as a live act & is on the road constantly. Such a career revival couldn't have happened to a more deserving soul talent, my friends.
