those are EVS' Ultimate Attenuators and there are actually two plugged into one another--the male RCA's plug directly into the amp and a cable goes to the single source of one's choice. Having two attenuators permits balance control as well (of course, YOU could have used dual pots in your little unit too).

I've asked people about the awkwardness of using the ultimate attenuators (since volume control would be BEHIND the amp), but the inconvenience seems minor to them.
