Hi everybody,

Just wanted to say a quick hello, and that I'm excited to finally be "able" to post in the Mc forum. I've been lurking this place for a long time, and I made the deal for my MCD201 earlier today. Looking forward to getting it and beginning what may become my own Mc odyssey, and tapping into the great and patient wisdom I've seen displayed here for so long! So, before I even get her into my own area code: any thoughts from you experienced 201 users? Do you have set up advice? Vibration control or IC suggestions? Anyone have thoughts on whether a powercord will change things for the better or worse? Or, you know, you could just tell me what a genius I am for choosing so wisely, etc :)

Either way, very happy to be here, and please excuse my (almost) pointless noob/virgin "excited" post.

Cheers,

dh

Welcome!

Put the rest of your system in your signature and we'll be able to help you better (see my sig for an example). For example, it would be useful to know if your preamp has XLR connectors when it comes to recommending cables.

Thanks guys - edited the sig in, per your suggestions. And Alberto, you are part of the reason I'm here in the forum now - saw your youtube videos, and have appreciated your thoughtful posts too!

Welcome. Some folks have had issues with the MCD201, but I've had zero problems with mine. Works perfect and sounds great. Let us know how it goes. I swapped out the power cord and am using a pretty high grade interconnect, but frankly, I must have tin ears as I can't really say there is a difference. Perhaps others have golden ears. Or maybe the whole cord and interconnect thing is a bunch of hooey, as many say. Experiment and see if you can tell the difference. If you can't tell the difference, save your money and buy more SACD's!

Congratulations on your new MCD201 and welcome to the McIntosh Forum!:thmbsp:

I have the MCD201 now with my second system.
Initially, I bought this in 2006 along with the MC2102. The MCD201 was the first CD player that I actually liked and this unit replaced a Linn Sondek LP12 that I had bought in 1983. I felt that the MCD201 sounded better than LP12 so I sold my LP12 and replaced it with the MCD201. The MCD201 has a nice analog sound and I think that you'll be very happy with it.
Since then, I've moved the MCD201 to my second system and have added a MCD500(highly recommended) to my main system.
After almost 3 years without a turntable I decided to buy a new LP12 and that unit will remain in my second system.

Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to its arrival, and have decided to ignore any potential dark foreshadowing involved in its scheduled arrival on Ash Wednesday... If my sig ever ends up looking like most of yours, I will have indeed been separated from my personal wealth, as well as the soul of my Gram, apparently :)

And gregswaim, I am particularly excited to hear that your 201 *replaced* an LP12! Wow. That's the kind of analogue-ness I'm hoping for, for sure!

You could be right 2uberoller.... the MCD doesn't come with blue meters, does it?....

and KMC - congrats on your MA6600! Let me know how it sounds through that - if you can tear yourself away from listening that is!

thanks everyone - glad to be here! i'm thinking ahead to a connection question: i'll be connecting it through a pre (as opposed to straight into a power amp), so should i use the fixed outputs? or variable? or will it make a difference in the sound in any way?

thanks in advace,

dh

Well guys... I appreciate the warm welcome. I'm only sorry I can't stay. I received my 201 and it simply doesn't work. Transport sounds vaguely like a pull start lawnmower or a wayward fork that snuck into the garbage disposal. Literally will not read the first (and last) 8 discs I put into it. Occasionally it will get as far as the TOC, but that's it.

I knew that this was a flawed, potentially faulty product when I arranged to buy it, so I can't say that I'm surprised - just very disappointed. I waited for a long time to join this forum, and to get into the sound that I know must exist for some users. But as anyone who has dealt with this kind of an experience after spending an above average amount of money on a CDP knows: this is not what I want out of my audio hobby. Part of excellence in design is *functionality*, and it is clear to me from my experience that I can't find that in this player.

Best of luck with your Mc pursuits (luck, of course, being the operative word, I'm afraid - at least in the case of the 201...). I'll be back someday when I get an amp, perhaps :)

WHat you are describing sounds like the units is simply broken, not a victim of some design flaw. The transport being THAT loud, and the 201 refusing to read ANY disc, sounds like it was broken to begin with, or damaged in shipping. Talk to the seller or the shipper, get a refund! Dont give up on Mac, and you can still come and chat until you pick up something not broken.
