View Full Version : no time to listen
uncooked 07-10-2004, 08:31 PM Im getting fed up with people in my house telling me "TURN THAT DOWN"
anyone else here like there music as loud as they can possibly play it? any advice you can give me. or do you just have to listen when everyone else is gone like i do.
im going to have to look into sound proofing. is there any product that just goes on the walls? and not inside the drywall as a insulation product. glue onto the wall or something.

What are they squaters or something? The inlaws? If it's your house tell them to get the f#ck out if they don't like it.
Or the music isn't loud enough if you can still hear them?

Lazarus Short 07-10-2004, 08:50 PM Or is that earspeakers?

BumpInTheNight 07-10-2004, 09:43 PM What I do is tell the wife,
"Honey, your right, I shouldnt sit here listening to music when I could be out scrounging the thrifts for more gear."
That will quiet things down for a week or so.:D
Anyone else?
That'd be me and headphones don't do it for me either, I need it to sound like there's a concert in my house ;)
uncooked 07-11-2004, 01:15 AM i hate headphones, i like the feeling of big woofers just pumping air through the room. and almost feels like someone is hitting you when the drumer starts hammering down.
anyone know of headphones that can do that :(
piece-it pete 07-12-2004, 11:52 AM I like it to be "realistic" :) but I don't think my neighbors always agree!!
Or the SO, for that matter (why does it have to be so loud? all you do is listen to that stereo lol). Bumps' got a good idea, I'll try it this coming weekend!
But I've kinda got them trained - they KNOW friday after work they will be enjoying certain *select* tracks, depending on how much beer is available.
And saturday is usually the eclectic stuff, the found vinyl, etc, but I'm more careful.
Heck I put up with their barking dogs, swearing (usually at the top of their lungs) kids, etc, so I don't feel bad - Can't we all just get along? no! stop playing that crap lol.
During the week I usually turn the sub off. They should count themselves lucky!!
Soundproofing can be hard, it's usually the bass that gets people going (although I think you can hear Halford screaming "victim of changes" about 5 miles away!), and bass is hard to stop, it'll go right through most soundproofing materials. Mass Loaded Vinyl (AKA Barium Loaded Vinyl) has replaced lead sheeting as the "serious" soundproofing mat'l, and the 1 lb version (1 lb/sf) can lop off 16 db at 125 hz, the lowest I've got data for, and -36 at 4000. That's pretty good.
Disclaimer: my company makes and I sell this stuff, but I've got no gain in it for this, a "good" sale is tens of thousands of sf. OK, disclaimer over.
It IS usually installed behind the drywall, HT rooms in upscale homes have used it for a while. I've been playing with the idea of gluing it to the back of acoustic ceiling tile and mounting it on my walls for a while, but I'm in a rental and waiting till I buy one.
I've also considered hanging it behind drapery or the like but worry about dampening the room so much it hurts the sound.
Anyway, this site, which buys from me!, has IMO the best overall look at this stuff:
http://www.soundproofing.org/
Look for "noise barrier material".
Although I'm no expert feel free to PM me if you wish, that's anyone.
Pete
Jstas 07-12-2004, 12:41 PM Hanging heavy drapes or tapestries on the walls can really cut down on noise travel. What I did was I got a rack that hung over the door for blankets and stuff. You can get them from those annoying companies like Lillian Vernon. I hung several blankets on the rack. I picked them up for like 10 bucks a peice at a local craft store. It cut down noise drastically outside of the room. Cost a grand total of about 60 bucks too.
As far as the walls go, curtain rods and heavy AV room cerpeting, like the have the for the curtain on a stage. It's expensive but it will kill noise quickly. Thick pile caperting will help too. If you already have carpeting, get a large throw rug or two and put them down.
The benefit to all of this is that your listing room will be acoustically dead for the most part.
Neighbors, I can't really say what to do about them. Can't shoot them so I guess you can kill them with kindness. Have a movie night or invite them over for dinner. Do something that will get the rig playing so they can enjoy and appreciate it too. As long as you don't abuse your neighbors with noise, they will usually be tolerant if you are nice, outgoing guy towards them.
whell 07-12-2004, 12:42 PM For super duty, headphones that can produce jet-engine volumes and bass that will turn your brain to Jello, try these. (http://www.headphones.com/headphones/professional/sennheiser_hd280.html)

Most realsitic headphones I heard are hybrids,,,like my AKG's,,,they are electrostatic for the best high and mids, but also have the typical arrangement for low freq...very inneficient cans though!

The same headphones are available for around $80 less at http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=26&productID=0020080280
Yay internet!
Jeffhs 07-15-2004, 01:55 PM I live in an apartment building, so cannot play my stereo (200 total watts bookshelf system) full blast. Doesn't matter, because I don't like loud music anyhow. I don't use headphones at present, just keep the volume down to where I can hear it but my neighbors can't. Works like a charm. I can listen to my music any time, even in the small hours of the morning, and no one ever complains. Have been listening like this all the time I've lived here (almost five years)--no neighbor problems whatsoever.

Not only do I not like loud music (whether it's blasphemy or not, that's the way I am), but, if you read my post more closely you will see in the first line another reason I simply cannot play my music loud, even if I wanted to.
Drybasement 07-16-2004, 08:06 PM I like using headphones.
It's a very intimate way to listen to music.
And a very good solution to music listening when you can't crank up the stare-e-o.

uncooked 07-19-2004, 08:40 PM ive noticed that alot of headphones when there cranked right up can produce quite a bit of sound! enough so that i might bother people late at night. atleast going by when i take them off and listen im sure when there on ears it muffles it down a bit.
is that where these new noise canceling ones come into play?
or do the higher quality headphones like the one you suggested do a better job to insulate the sound.
do to local availablity this would be my easiest choice http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=2&WLBS=fsweb13&sku_id=0665000FS10029794&catid=&newdeptid=2
how does that look compared to what you suggested? anything to look for in quality headphones?
thanks for the help.

Try reading the website at www.headphone.com (http://www.headphone.com) . Also known as HeadRoom, they're serious headphone enthusiasts. There's an immense amount of information available on their website, and good prices on a huge variety of headphones and headphone amps and accessories.
Lambo 07-19-2004, 10:13 PM I'm late to this thread but "Victim of Changes" effing rocks!
I love the older Judas stuff. I had the 2 disk Metal Works disc by the Priest fired up last week on the Marantz Model 920s and HK 680i and it was like a force of nature, or a Maxell commercial. I love the older Judas stuff. After Screaming for Vengeance they just followed the recipe or formula for songs.
KK and Glenn's dueling guitars and Halford's vocals are awesome!
Hard not to play that stuff full volume. I've aged and mellowed but sometimes
one can't help but just rock.
Old Scorpions, pre Blackout is also of this quality. Post Blackout, just going through the motions or formula, of song writing.
I want/need some old JBLs or HPMs so I can rock hard too.
Although my DefTech BP2004s aren't bad for bipolars.

"Turbo Lover" is an all time fave of mine!!!!
GordonW 07-20-2004, 10:56 PM "Turbo Lover" does indeed rock. But, I really dig "You Got Another Thing Coming", even more. Especially the video, where the guy gets his head blown off! :D
Regards,
Gordon.
Wireworm5 07-20-2004, 11:49 PM My favorite JP song is Beyond the Realms of Death. I also like Bullet Train and Sentinel. And Green Manalishi from Unleahed in the East is also a fav.
