View Full Version : New guy looks back....
zombie1210 03-02-2009, 08:12 PM I stumbled upon this place a few days ago, and have spent a lot of time reading posts, and looking at pics of all the nice gear. Especially receivers from the 70's. I couldn't resist the temptation, and last night I bought a Sansui 8080DB that I will have in a few days. A fully refurbed one. And quite a monster, too.
I am looking forward to looking back! In my younger days, I was "into" hi-fi" and owned my share of Kenwoods Pioneers Marantzes and a few others. Never owned a Sansui but a couple of my friends did. I always liked them, and told myself I'd have one "someday".
Well....life, marriage, and kids sorta put "someday" on hold, and before I knew it, everything changed to plastic and soulless looking gear. I've owned a few of these, but always lusted after a blast from my past. Now, single again after all these years, its time for me to indulge myself when I can!
Anyway...enough of that. Thanks for having me!

Edriz 03-03-2009, 09:00 AM Hey Zombie, Welcome toAK. That's a nice Sansui. What other gear do you have or are you just starting to build your system.
I was just about in the same situation as you. The only exception is I'm still married :sigh:
Years ago I had to sell most of my gear. I did keep my SX-1980. I would never part with that. But I always kept the idea in the back of my mind that, like you, one day when the kids got older and things got settled I would rebuild my system.
Hearing that you had to go through some troubles is unfortunate but now hopefully you are doing well.
AK is a great place and the folks here are a great bunch and very knowledgeable about most every kind of vintage gear you can imaging. Even if you just want to hang out and talk.

Mystic 03-03-2009, 03:27 PM Welcome, Z.
zombie1210 03-03-2009, 05:39 PM Thanks guys!
My current gear is a decent CD player, a black, ugly and generic looking Kenwood receiver, and Bose Acoustimass speakers.
I think I will be looking for a turntable, and some nice "bookshelf" speakers next.
Tiver 03-03-2009, 05:46 PM Welcome to AK.

I also find some of the Sansui models attractive, but I haven't picked one up - yet.

lha1992 03-07-2009, 02:56 PM Welcome to AK!
zombie1210 03-07-2009, 03:28 PM I got it today. Its a MONSTER, and it sounds great!
I'm even thinking of getting rid of my tube headphone amp because the 8080DB sounds that good.
The FM section is truly amazing. Stations that sounded canned and drab, now sound alive and colorful.
Even my iPod Touch sounds good through it!
My 20 year old son couldn't believe how heavy it is, and how good it sounds.
clydeselsor 03-07-2009, 03:32 PM Congratulations and welcome!

No laughing at my "entertainment center". My old one won't even hold this beast!
So...my Alienware PC box fills in for the photo until I find something suitable to use as furniture.
MJSNet 03-07-2009, 07:18 PM That's a sweet looking Sansui :thmbsp:
zombie1210 03-07-2009, 07:30 PM WIth my old BPC receiver, I needed the headphone amp to get decent sound through my phones. I can plug right into the Sansui and it sounds sweet.
Currently I have it hooked up to a pair of JBL Balboa towers and they sound quite good as well. For apartment volume levels. quite nice indeed!
zombie1210 03-27-2009, 09:56 PM Here's my stuff, as of today.
